They're re-running it in the wee small hours on Friday on C4. Most Underrated Cartoon Sitcom ever?

Nabisco to thread!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

There hasn't been one of these before, has there? Search engine won't do words under four letters, so I can't actually tell...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

There hasn't. There was a thread where London FAP pictures were posted and Nabisco said that Tom E. was looking more like Bob with each successive picture.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Whew. Back to topic then.

I absolutely love Bob & Margaret. It would take me a bit more time than I have available to figure what precisely I love about it, but there you go. I think it's that there's this peaceful mundanity to it -- as if it's meant to be watched by children -- and then the subject matter is adult: not to the point of a clash or juxtaposition with the presentation, but just run-of-mill detail-oriented adulthood. It's also one of few shows I know of to present a couple so easy for (maybe just me) to identify with. They're a bit boring and slobby. The people around them are either horrible and annoying or irritatingly magnificent and full of them selves. So they go home, order in, and watch movies. This is half of the story of every good relationship and even non-relationship I've ever been in; I would think there would be other shows that do something similar, but only one far-off example comes to mind.

Also I am in love with Margaret's voice.

It just gets verging-on-mid-middle-class suburban living in Britain absolutely dead on, keeping it mostly low key except for the odd surreal touch (cf. the burglars discussing the quality of spout on the teapot), which makes them come through all the harder - the surreal bits just stay plausible enough to make them oddly touching...

Plus The Simpsons never went to the big supermarket on the Purley Way, did they? Eh?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

And they do sound a bit like my parents. In fact, that feels just like it - it's really quite like home. Which makes me a wee bit tearful.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Arg, you said "it gets suburban living in Britain dead-on" and then compared it to the Simpsons: America is not like the Simpsons, I swear! Although maybe it should be, I would just drive everywhere laughing at the signs.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

That wasn't so much the suburban thing, just pointing out that in terms of going to Homebase and thinking about getting some hanging baskets, B&M outdo the Simpsons every time.

But trust me. If you were to somehow become a early-to-mid-40's married couple in Upper Norwood, They Would Be You.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I fear that during my and my girlfriend's heaviest phases of Bob & Margaret viewing, they already were us.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that it's a bad thing to be, though. By comparison to being Stressed Eric, though I dunno if that ever reached the US.

i bloody love bob and margaret. they rock my sad little world. :)

Christ, it's me and Pam in 7-8 years then. At least the takeaway food is of high quality round here.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic, undoubtedly. I like the dogs.

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn! So when is Bob & Margaret going to be re-running here in the states? I miss that show - the dogs especially, but that hamster was cute, too. And the episode about going to (Cheddar?) and the Canadian in-laws? Priceless! (And it gave me excellent amunition to use on live-ins Canadian family.)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic show, which I didn't mind staying up til the wee hours to match. But it's a toss-up as to whether Bob's mum or their dogs were freakier.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

The boobies on the ladies always freaked me out.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I vaguely remember Stressed Eric being on Comedy Central before they had any original programming.
