Deception, Domestiction and Faithin the Forbidden City.

With speaker : Seth Fulsome (University of Alberta)"

This poster is on the wall in my bar. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?????

I thought I knew my -isms. And my cinema. And - for what its worth - my Forbidden City. As extra tantilization, it takes place in a non-existant room in my Uni, at an improbable time (8pm - consid'ring we shut at 9pm).

It all sounds very made up. Is it happening on April 1st?

The poster refers to the fact that gangs of bored Chinese kids clobbered hundreds of people with lead pipes in Beijing movie theaters between 1945 and 1975. By 1974 the Maoist regime decided to put an end to this by spreading television sets among the Beijing population. People stayed at home, and the youths' anti-social activities eventually ceased.

This is not necessarily true, but I can't think of another explanation.

It also features a non-existant lecturer.

I think our students are being all situationist on my ass.

Plumbism = lead poisoning by the way. A theory which occured to me is how lead poisoning from the ancient pipes in the forbidden city caused a high increase in the number of brain damaged and docile simpletons in this period. Hence the Forbidden CIty became known for its docility - and representations iof this in Chinese cinema could be used to excuse all sorts of repressive activity.

Either that or its a joke.

students - they're so funny. Spike their beer Pete, it's the only answer.

chris (chris), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the best thing to spike student beer with? Besides, won't they just enjoy it? Grrr I don't ever want to be a student again wish I were still at university.

Note to UK Customs and Excise. This thread is merely a laugh and not an indication, should any of our students fall foul to some kind of lead poisoning that it was in any way perpetrated by me. Instead it would be a coincidence, or even something even more sinister - like one of my many enemies trying to frame me Murder She Wrote style.
