J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

one more reason why the entire free world, in its secret heart, thinks we're completely pathetic

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

That resolution is worth about as much as the paper it's printed on.

I call for a National Day of THOUGHTLESS ABANDON and SPEEDING.

hstencil, Friday, 28 March 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

J0hn: You mean unlike what they think of Canada?

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Who thinks of Canada?

hstencil, Friday, 28 March 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but this is seriously depressing. People don't think of Canada and think "oh, yeah, that nation where they actually passed a resolution called for FASTING AND PRAYER TO THE CHRISTIAN GOD." This is just utterly humiliating.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you expect? They're politicians! I imagine that before it becomes law (if ever), the restaurant lobby will tear the "fasting" bit to shreds.

hstencil, Friday, 28 March 2003 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, yeah, my brane imploded on seeing that.

Anyway I'm having enough trouble figuring out touring to Canada -- if that goes welll, maybe moving will be next. Although actually I'm way more tempted to join the Cascadia Free State movement.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:34 (twenty-three years ago)

A national day of humility, that's good.

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we have a national day of binging and masturbation too?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

For me, that's every day.

hstencil, Friday, 28 March 2003 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like resolutions like the above because it's funny to see Civil War practices brought back. 'Funny' in an extremely contemptuous way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd probably have something to say if I read the link.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

So March 17 is to be known as God Day? Bush seems to be doing his best to make his mark on history as The One Who Ranked Below Nixon...

Al Ewing (Al Ewing), Friday, 28 March 2003 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually looked at the Canadian immigration website a few days ago. It's a terrible cliché (not the site--me looking). But I am aboot as despondent aboot the future of the USA as I could be. Anyone want to give me a job in Canadia? I can already sing O Canada, I know about Vimy Ridge and Wilfrid Laurier and stuff!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 28 March 2003 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to eat a burger with freedom fries and shake my fist at the heavens on that day.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 March 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"shake my fist at the heavens" is the best masturbation euphemism I've ever seen.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 02:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always been thankful that we've maintained that separation of church and state. We do, however, have a national day in honour of toques and back bacon. It's what makes us different.
Oh, and the universal health care, vast expanses of untouched wilderness and the brain-numbing cold.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Friday, 28 March 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"shake my fist at the heavens" is the best masturbation euphemism I've ever seen.

I'm sure that "no masturbation" is included somewhere in the bill.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 March 2003 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Canadians pay lip service to G-d, as far as official things like that go, but that's it.
And our constitutional head of state is an Asian Lady.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

canada won't let you in. and you won't find a job there either. these national days of prayer are passed with great frequency. there is no mention of christianity so it doesn't violate the establishment cause. it's not a bill either, it's a proclamation. i am a former canadian, i'd never go back.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but Canada has a legitimate, momentous "God" party.. i.e. the Reform party. Those of you in the U.S., imagine if Pat Robertson's party was a viable party within grasp of getting power in your state.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, yeah, Keith? I remember when we gave you the boot. The National Boot. You still got it? Cuz me and the b'ys from Skinners Pond were planning a big ice fishin' trip to Manitoba this June and Hoss just has the one galosh. So, uh, all is forgiven Keith, come home to your family...but don't forget the boot.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

(And before anyone says anything, yes -- there is a difference between Bush and Robertson)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Good for you, keith.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The Reform Party has been the Canadian Alliance for several years now, ever since they united the right by merging with, uh, who did they merge with again?
Anyway, I would say they're about the same as the GOP, only with cheaper suits.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always been thankful that we've maintained that separation of church and state.

Quebec not withstanding.

The Reform Party has been the Canadian Alliance for several years now, ever since they united the right by merging with, uh, who did they merge with again?

Canadian Alliance didn't merge with anyone, thats the great part. Some Conservatives jumped over to them at some point but the PC have a chance of one day being big again. Alliance haven't a hope in hell of being anything more then the opposition, since I can't see anyone in their right mind siding with them. They wont get a seat anywhere east of Ontario, and even in Ontario they will never take that many.
The Alliance, nothing but a bunch of rednecks in suits.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Canada is a diverse and multicultural society like the states but unlike them they adopt laws to respect this fact and don't shove a specific religions down their population's throat.

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

ok I give up what phrase on this thread got us googled

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

mea culpa: And our constitutional head of state is an Asian Lady.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Z, heh, I have told you that half of my family is in the Alliance now, right? (note - this does NOT include myself)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 28 March 2003 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

that's awful!

I love Canada. The ppl are so, so friendly (particularly in Ottawa, for some reason) and I really enjoyed the time I spent there. The only thing that wiould stop me moving there is those harsh winters!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

use new cliches please

max renn, Friday, 28 March 2003 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

You Americans, just when you think you've seen rock-bottom, you guys always innovate a new one. Thank you.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

there is no mention of christianity so it doesn't violate the establishment cause.

While it doesn't say "pray to our Christian deity you heathens" it does mention God w/a big 'G' several times, as well as Heaven and Providence.

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, don't drag Rhode Island into this, I know the constitution.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I find something strangely dissonant about the present administration legislating for "humility."

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 28 March 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

thirteen years pass...

bump

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 21 July 2016 17:23 (nine years ago)
