Survey says: Classic

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:38 (twenty-three years ago)

bob looks up to no good in that picture

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob has his ways.

Chuck Woolery and Pat Sajak are the dark evils of this universe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

RIP Ray Combs, we barely knew ye

Aaron A., Friday, 28 March 2003 06:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Wink seems to be the classic mold.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a game show more than anything and I still do.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 28 March 2003 07:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I fucking hate Chuck Woolery also, and also these rent-a-hosts former actors they get to host game shows (a tradition the great Richard Dawson may have started but did not belong to). Thank God they finally fired Louie Anderson.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 March 2003 07:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Henry Kelly! Going for Gold was just so great.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 March 2003 07:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Bowser!

weatheringdaleson (weatheringdaleson), Friday, 28 March 2003 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicholas Parsons on Sale of the Century.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Bruce Forsythe was always good, especially on The Generation Game.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

100% Gene Rayburn, the man had major fashion sense.

http://community-2.webtv.net/TamWarner/hostshalloffame/scrapbookFiles/postedD10.jpg

I remember when he wore a black and red tartan suitcoat and everyone on the show made fun of him.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Right now Richard Karn, because he replaced the worst game show host in history, Louie Anderson. Every Family Feud host has been good 'cept Louie.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

who was the snooty, erudite fellow who hosted What's My Line and I've Got a Secret? He's kinda lame but sharp as a tack

Richard Dawson!

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Shame on you Mr. Clover!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 March 2003 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I was beginning to wonder if a female had ever hosted a game show!

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 28 March 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

There was also that horrid "Weakest Link" woman.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 28 March 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Chuck wolllry

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 29 March 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm hooked on Jillian Barberie, too. It's sad. I get up early to watch her do the weather on Fox 11.

I'd pick Monty Hall.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 29 March 2003 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Have we all forgotten Jenny McCarthy so quickly?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 March 2003 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned in nineties nostalgia binge shockah!

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 29 March 2003 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

THOSE HALCYON DAYS OF 1996.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 March 2003 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Come back Beck all is forgiven!

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 29 March 2003 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Jillian is fucking SMART though -- like one of the smartest in streetwise whip-smart not necc. book learnin (tho i wouldn't be surprised) terms ever.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 29 March 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Bert Convy:

Also Jack Barry and Bill Cullen

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 30 March 2003 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

'dating women on tv with the help of chuck woolery" is still one of my favourite beastie boys lines

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Sunday, 30 March 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Neil Hamburger has some great Bert Convy anecdotes

Masters Of The Maze - Host (1993-94)
ZooVenture - Host

order some disorder, Sunday, 30 March 2003 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris Hardwick! If you count Shipmates as a "game show" - which it sort of is, I guess, but not really. Never mind. I second J.D. Roth. Fun House = CLASSIC. But those stupid kids, always wasting precious fun house time riding down the fucking waterslide. Yes, it looks fun - but go GRAB THA MONEY YOU IDIOTS!

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 30 March 2003 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Monkhouse.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 30 March 2003 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Kennedy hosts Friend or Foe now, so she's another female game show host.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Sunday, 30 March 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Alistair Divall. He did "Keynotes" in the early 90s on ITV. Those who were with me in spirit then will KNOW. The man is untouchable. I hope he is still alive.

kieron, Sunday, 30 March 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Guy Smiley... anyone? Anyone?

jm (jtm), Sunday, 30 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, you're right, Guy Smiley.

maura (maura), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
watched x-treme dating again tonight. more props to jillian. its this sardonic everything in quotes everything a joke nobody worthwhile but hell its funny at their expense tone she keeps going, always in one or another voice, never just her own sustained cynical crescendo thing she has going.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 4 September 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll always remember her as (the former?) Mrs. Bret Barberie

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 4 September 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

jillian is such a skank!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 September 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

also, blount otm, gene rayburn owns you all

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 4 September 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I know a lot of girls like Jillian. they're funny when a remote easily switches them off.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 4 September 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

No one's mentioned Meredith Vieira yet, so I will.

(She makes "Millionaire" much more watchable than it was when that annoying Regis guy hosted it.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 4 September 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

jody yr. just jealous of her biting wit.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Bob Sag(e/a)t count? That is, does America's funniest home videos count as a game-show? (also, brilliant x-post)

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

In 6th grade I wrote poem about game-show hosts for school. Wish I knew where that was.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You're welcome, jaymc!

(I really like Trebek too, but I think I'd love "Jeopardy!" even more if Meredith Vieira hosted that program. Vieira is my favorite game show host EVER, obv.)

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:24 (twenty-one years ago)

You really have an onion on this issue? Weird...

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Sunday, 5 September 2004 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven years pass...

Monty Hall turned 95 yesterday. With luck he & his wife will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary next year.

My answer for the thread however is Garry Moore of I've Got a Secret: articulate, cool, real-seeming, and always down to perform physical stunts on the show. And I know smoking is terrible but there's something badass about him having a cig in his hand *at all times*

Josefa, Friday, 26 August 2016 18:07 (nine years ago)

i am quite addicted to watching youtubes of Steve Harvey doing Family Feud

Len Bincowank (Noodle Vague), Friday, 26 August 2016 18:15 (nine years ago)

Garry Moore was great. Buzzr runs a late block of the black & white-era panel shows every weeknight and it's done wonders for my Mad Men withdrawal.

Wink Martindale

great Canadian prog-psych debut from 1969 (Sparkle Motion), Saturday, 27 August 2016 02:20 (nine years ago)

Another vote for Guy Smiley.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Saturday, 27 August 2016 02:21 (nine years ago)

There was the one IGAS episode where Moore was demonstrating some large contraption and iirc his thumb got caught in it--he starts freaking out, smash cut to commercial (which is retained when it's aired today), and when they get back he calmly explains that his digit was lightly crushed.

I saw this episode the other day! Once you realize it's not a joke it's a terrifying moment. You'd think this would be remembered as one of the all-time tragic game show mishaps. And when they come back from commercial his finger's all bandaged up. I think it was his smoking hand too.

They showed another episode from the same year I believe, 1962, where Garry Moore has to kill some time, so he goes up into the control room and introduces every member of the crew (shades of Dave Letterman)… and then he sits down at a drum kit and starts jamming on some tune with the band - and he's a really good drummer!

Josefa, Saturday, 27 August 2016 05:18 (nine years ago)

Oh wow, Buzzr rn is showing To Tell The Truths from 1970: Peggy Mass has been railing against feminists, and Bill Cullen just made a joke about hitting his wife w/a McSorley's mug.

Earlier they had the guy who produced the legendary scam album The Best of Marcel Marceao (and later was responsible for "Apache" by The Incredible Bongo Band and Nixon's second inaugural) as a contestant!
