This event sounds dodgy even to me. But it takes place in Tim H.'s coveted Red Hook district.

"Black on the Outside" - Smiths tribute band to play Brooklyn (Apr. 5)
posted by davidt on Thursday March 27 2003, @09:00AM

Lloyd H. Miller writes:
Black on the Outside, a tribute to the Smiths, is playing a show in Brooklyn on Saturday, April 5th, at Lillie's Bar. The evening, called "Doc Martens and Un-Used Condoms" begins at 10 p.m. Also featured are The Victoria Lucas, who will be doing a one-night-only set of all New Wave covers, and a DJ, who will be spinning all your favorite British 80s stuff.

Lillie's is located at the corner of Beard and Dwight Streets in Red Hook, Brooklyn. As there is no public transportation save the bus, it's best to drive or take a car service. If you don't live in Brooklyn, take the F or G train to the Carroll Street stop and then call a car (Arecibo at 1-718-783-6465 will cost you around $6 from the train station). Call Lillie's at 1-718-858-9822 for more info.

I get the lyrical reference (probably way too esoteric for a non-Smiths fan), but a band calling themselves "Black on the Outside" seems aching to be misinterpretted and, summarily, severely beaten up.

Alex in NYC will come and do battle?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 March 2003 07:47 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a Smiths cover band in SF called The Nguyens.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 March 2003 07:59 (twenty-three years ago)

(Any luck with the Houellebecq Spencer?)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 March 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Mary, actually I've decided to save the $30 and wait for it to appear at the Library (in July I think). You and several other peeps have been lukewarm on it, so...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 March 2003 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

so lemme get this straight....people are going all the way out to red hook to see a smiths cover band!?

geeta (geeta), Friday, 28 March 2003 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

god, I'm so slow that it took me thirty seconds to realise why a Smiths trib band might call themselves Black On The Outside.

the name only works if the band are all African Americans, and they play Smiths tunes in an African American way, whatever that is.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Geeta, Red Hook is the draw, the Smiths cover band just icing.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of Smiths cover bands, how are the Sweet & Tender Hooligans, LA massive?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Lillie's is, like, the best bar in NYC. We took Tim H and a box of Cheerios there. Lillie herself wanted to pour the milk into the bowl.

Alex in NYC will come and do battle?

I would pay money to see him charge the stage and lead the band in an impromptu rendition of "The Wait," which concludes with him leaping into the crowd and biting someone's ear off in a frenzy of explosive delight. Not my ear, obviously.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

An African-American band that called themselves Black On The Outside would probably also get beaten up for completely different reasons. They would also get called The Oreos a lot.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

If I'm remembering correctly, this is a Smiths cover band with an African-American singer...

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

... and that singer is ME. (The preceding may be a bald-faced lie.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to say something but I figured you would first. ;-)

never heard of 'em, but will research.

does anyone agree that The Nguyens is the best name for a Smiths cover band ever?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it, Spencer.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It is genius.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember reading a Morrissey interview where he said that if he were 15 and heard panic he'd do something and the other and "probably start a band called the Joneses."

I was really disappointed with this because it implied that the name/profession double-meaning wasn't even intentional. The proper equivalent is as such:

THE SMITHS = THE MASONS

I've seen them, they're quite good!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary, are you still going?

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't go but if everyone wants to come by my new place afterwards, why not?

hstencil, Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

We took Tim H and a box of Cheerios there.

Why is no one focusing on this?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm free this Friday if anyone wants to go. So far there are no takers.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

But it's on for Saturday, isn't it?

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 3 April 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops, you're right, I was thinking it was Friday. Oh no! What's going on Fri. then?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 3 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

In Astoria, nothing but packing.

hstencil, Thursday, 3 April 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Where are we going? I might be free, and I have a sexy skirt that I bought that I want to wear.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 3 April 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Red Hook, BK baby.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Alright, I'll go.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

YAY

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Who is coming?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

not me

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Why not?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

wait a second - I just reread the top. I had no idea how far out this was, how long you reckon it takes to get there and back?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Watch Ally backpedal:) Yeah, looks like a bitch to get to, I wouldn't suggest you come unless you really felt like it, I'm even considering giving it a miss (sssh).

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe we should go to like Bellevue and just say we went to Red Hook instead?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a possibilty!

Mary (Mary), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Black on the Outside = Now on tour with The Negro Problem!
