It suddenly struck me this morning that the lack of a firewall means I can actually listen to online radio at work - so please use this thread to tell me about some of your favourite stations!

(Also - is there any way to use AIM through the web rather than using the AIM software? I can now use it from here but I can't install the software on the laptop.)

six years pass...

Here in Asheville, North Carolina, I'm helping out some folks who are starting up Asheville Free Media, which is going to be kind of a cross between Utah Free Media and East Village Radio.

http://www.ashevillefm.org/

They're kicking things off this weekend with programming tied to Harvest Records' Transfigurations Festival: http://harvest-records.com/trans_mission.html

It's really kind of exciting! (Hopefully, I can snag a show this fall.)

I just got an internet radio for my birthday and I'm looking for listening recommendations, particularly from outside UK. What stations do you listen to?

I didn't know you could get 'an internet radio'! What does it look like?

the pinefox, Sunday, 30 January 2011 13:49 (fifteen years ago)

It just looks like a normal radio:

It connects via wifi and then you can pretty much stream any radio station that has a web feed.

WFMU of course and also WKCR, who are right now in the middle of a a tribute to the great trumpeter Roy Eldridge, who would have been a hundred this weekend

Never Make Your Moog Too Soon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 31 January 2011 00:21 (fifteen years ago)

i do a show on east village radio a few times per month, as part of the academy record show. eastvillageradio.com.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Monday, 31 January 2011 00:24 (fifteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to check out Ian's show

Just heard a cool tune on WKCR by Artie Shaw and his Gramercy Five called "The Gentle Grifter"

I just got an ipad app called ooTunes, sort of a webstream aggregator I guess -- it's pretty cool, you can search by country/city/genre, filter by bitrate or stream format, etc. It's kinda cool to see what's playing on the radio in Belarus, jump to American Samoa, switch to a streaming-only dub station for a while for a while, whatever suits the mood.

earnest goes to camp, ironic goes to ilm (pixel farmer), Monday, 31 January 2011 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

the categories are pretty arbitrary, but here's a list i put together:

mookieproof, Monday, 31 January 2011 02:12 (fifteen years ago)

That's a handy list, thanks!

I like to keep NPR affiliates bookmarked for each time zone so I can have a little flexibility when to listen to ATC.

A great station I've repped for several times before -- Technicolor Web of Sound, nonstop late-60s/early-70s psych, lots of obscure bands.

Thanks for the suggestions, particularly mookieproof's comprehensive list. Looking forward to checking some of these out.

eleven months pass...

RIP Technicolor Web of Sound. Paul Moews, the guy behind it, was paying for the bandwidth mostly out of pocket all these years, and finally said enough. Possibly only on hiatus; fans are working to put it all back together in a way that takes the financial burden off of Paul.

Has internet radio ever been anything other than an imitation of analogue radio?
