I'm Going to be On a TV Quiz Show! (Possibly)

Whilst my pub quiz team were competing in the local league last night, a rep from a TV production company came up to us and asked us if we want to be on a show called Brainteaser. She took our pictures using a Polaroid camera (haven't seen one in years) and we all filled in the forms! Now I've just gotta wait to see if I'm picked! Isn't that exciting?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I was on a TV quiz show in early 2001 on VH1 called "Name That Video." Won $4,600.00. Woulda won a SUV, but couldn't name REO Speedwagon video. Ah well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Brainteaser is ACES. I'm dead jealous - it goes out live though so I'd shit meself

j0e (j0e), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't have been able to name an REO Speedwagon *song* let alone video! But somehow I don't think they'd ask abt them on a UK quiz show.

This Brainteaser thing is no "Who wants to be a Millionaire". The top prize is only £3000.

I'd never heard of it before (of course I didn't tell the rep that).

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in the final trials for the Lancaster University University Challenge team. That's not that impressive, though, is it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem some of us have already been on TV quiz shows being grilled by Jeremy Paxman. And failed to get beyond the first round, hey ho. But cool, MarkH! Big up to the Oxford masseev ect ect. And gd luck Dom.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

oh it is Dom! VERY impressive!

Thanks Liz. Have Hildas got a team in this year's?

RickyT's been on UC too! I had the misfortune to have my uni career fall twixt the Bamber and Jeremy eras - I would've loved to go on (I'm not doing a Masters or PhD just to get on it tho).

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I was indeed. Managed to lose twice tho :(

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Friends of mine have been on 'Passport Challenge' (poss. only available in Scotland) and on 'Fifteen to One'.

alext (alext), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

bring back going for gold.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I know a couple of ppl who've been on 15 to 1 but they didn't do very well.

It was weird having to fill in the application form in super mega-quick time (there and then either coz the rep had to press on and visit other pubs, or possibly coz we wanted to press on & get on with our league quiz). I couldn't remember my work phone no., tho I e-mailed it to them today. I had to put what my three favourite TV programmes were....as time was of the essence I lied & said Fort Boyard, Topranko & Shooting Stars! (thus consigning my application to the bin, most prolly!)

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

(I loved Topranko too)

j0e (j0e), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

You should have said Whittle.

Graham (graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

What's Whittle?

The pic was awful, too! I looked like I was completely trollied (and it was the start of the evening!) Next week's quiz is against the Butchers Arms at the top of the league, if we beat them I think we move into second place. Mind you, *finding* the Butchers is a challenge in itself....

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 28 March 2003 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he he frottage...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 28 March 2003 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Congrats Mark! Don't dismiss your chances so quickly. Maybe after seeing that list of fave shows, the producers may say, "He does need our cash, so..."

I'm currently in the States, so I can't watch, but be as self-confident as poss (if you get on). Whatever you win in the end will be more than you started with.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

My sister was on 100% a while ago. She found the whole experience very unfun, felt ill and didn't win.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

100% finished a long time ago, didn't it?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

A while ago.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Watch out, lots of those gameshows are very dodgy. My friend won a TiVo and the entire Rhino Records catalogue from one of the low-budget cable TV quizshows [the one where you challenge a panel of pop-culture nerds] - and it took about 6 months for her to get her prize.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 29 March 2003 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

One of my ex-co-workers went of the PRICE IS RIGHT and won a car. She had to pay about 2 grand in taxes to actually receive the car which she promptly sold to a car dealership.

order some disorder, Saturday, 29 March 2003 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I’m in the same position as Liz – knocked out in the first round – but it was back in Bamber’s time, and the team that knocked us out (Bradford University) went on to win the competition.

Rex (Rex), Saturday, 29 March 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I was reserve for Brum's University Challenge team last year.

We didn't actually qualify for the televised bit of the competition, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 29 March 2003 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I emant to ask Carsmile abt "frottage" when I met him at the Sinisters/Nought/Ricky Spontane/Country Teasers gig on Saturday, but forgot. It threw up a lot of work-unfriendly hits when I googled it hmmmmmmmm......

Go here to play the Brainteaser game online! I'm worried now, so far I've only been a Loser and I've played a dozen times! And under the glare of those studio lights.....

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 08:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i was on uni challenge a few years ago. we made the quarter finals. i had ridiculous stripey hair for two of the three episodes we were in, and on one of these occasions was wearing a top with one long arm and one short arm. the shame.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds grebt, Toby, I think I remember you - just. But did Paxman make any remarks abt it?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 08:51 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you want to know about fr0ttage, Mark? It's an artistic technique used by Max Ernst and surely not anything remotely rude, innit. Grrr Paxman laughed at me, but it was the correct answer, haha.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds grebt, Toby, I think I remember you - just. But did Paxman make any remarks abt it?

no, sadly. at least not that i can remember. it's amazing how many people do remember seeing me, though (usually they say something like "my mum said 'oh my god look at this freak!'").

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

well, I'm over the first hurdle! They rang me up and asked me a load of questions and I'm going in for a screen test on Tuesday. It's filmed in Oxford, fortunately, at the Oxford Channel studios (yes, we have our own TV station here).

To see how you would have done, here are the questions I was asked (I can't remember *all* the ones he asked, but this should give you a fair idea). Guess which ones I got wrong....

What is the name of Madonna & Guy Ritchie's son?

Sinead was a contestant on which recent tv talent show?

Which actress starred in Vanilla Sky and Capt. Correlli's Mandolin?

What is the capital of Senegal?

Name the 1992 European Union treaty?

What is the name of the current UK Defence Secretary?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Errr....

Rocco
Fame Academy
Penelope Cruz
Dakka
Maastricht
Geoff Hoon.

I think.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Rocky?; Fame Academy?; Penelope Cruz; no idea; Maastrict; Geoff Hoon.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew them all except for Madonna's son. I am so highbrow (Sinead fits into this no matter what you say as I love her oh yeah but there's the Penelope Cruz thing hmmm stnadards have fallen)

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm remembering more qs. now. There was also

who wrote Disclosure?

and

which group had a no. 1 hit recently in collaboration with Elton John?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Were there really no questions about the Trojan War?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 3 April 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom -- Cheers to Lancaster U.! I was there in 1998-99 for an American-study-abroad program. No quiz team, but I wrote record reviews for the newspaper.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

HOORAY!

I'm going to be on! Tuesday 1.30 Channel 5.

Set the video ;)

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 April 2003 06:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I wrote record reviews for the newspaper.

So do I, for my sins... Worst student newspaper in Britain.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 4 April 2003 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

dakar, not dakka.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

you can sing that to the tune of the They Might Be Giants song though the syllables dont quite match

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

which was actually written by Neil Simon AFAIK.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

oops no tell a lie - NAT Simon. Golden rule when going on quizzes...use surnames only!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

This is acceptable for certain surnames eg 'Kubrick' but surely not for 'Simon'. It would just sound like you were talking about your mate.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Good luck, Mark.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks Nicole.

good point, N. (Nat, Neil, Paul, Simple ect ect hmmmmmm)

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:34 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

One of the most unlikely revives ever: I am possibly going up against the Eggheads!

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

who?

sunny successor, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 4 September 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

five years pass...

I must be a glutton for punishment. Went to the audition for Pointless last Thursday. If we've been successful, I'll hear by 1st March.

Grandpont Genie, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

I take it you didn't do Eggheads
