I messed up my internet shortcuts

Since I primarily use Opera 7.02 as my browser nowadays, I'd been trying to figure a way to open up my bookmarked favorites (extension: .url) through Opera, but it always goes through IE. I've tried editing the file type entry so that open is supposed to execute "C:\Program Files\Opera7\opera.exe" but it still opened with IE. Then I removed the file type and tried to create it again from scratch to put in "rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l" as the default action, but I get this error: "This Internet Shortcut cannot be opened because failed to run." Exactly like that, it doesn't specify what program failed to run. Also, the favorites menu in the taskbar is completely empty, so I have to actually open the favorites folder directly through explorer to access my bookmarks. Help.

i think there is a third party program to convert ie-style bookmarks into opera. or else an import feature. hold on, let me have a look around

yeah, try file-->import-->internet explorer favorites.

also, it sounds like IE is set as yr default browser. off the top of my head, i can't think of exactly how to force that dialog box where you can change that setting. it pops up when you first run a newly installed browser.

the conversion program i was thinking of is for converting outlook address books into opera format. i really like the mail client in opera7, and don't have outlook on the computer anymore. i'm getting a little annoyed with opera7, and actually re-installed 6.06, but that's another story.

btw there is 7.03 out now

It's a weird thing, even if I go through explorer to C:Windows\favorites and doubleclick on a shortcut, it seems to open an individual window for each individual word -- like if I try "Windows Update" it'll open http://windows and http://update.url, and I think also the directory path too. Whoops.

i just deleted url as a file type so i could feel yr pain. i then created a new url file type, and in the advanced tab on the creation box, i selected: URL: http. what happens now when i double click on a url file is that it opens in opera, (that's my default browser)

deleted again, and on the advanced button picked "internet shortcut", which restored the .url file type to it's original status.

(when i had it on URL:http, in the "open" action, it had the path to opera.exe)

I don't have an advanced tab -- are you on Win98? Closest thing it seems to it is a "Use DDE" checkbox that opens up a few new fields: DDE application; Application; DDE application not running; Topic.

i'm xp

but all that was on that button is to associate with a file type. in other words, windows had a list of file types that was permanent, and you could add/delete the three-letter file extensions and associate them with an item on the list. maybe there's an equivalent place for you to do that on 98

you could also go to the .url entry in the registry and change it there.

on mine, it's: hkey_classes_root\.URL and there's only one value set:

in the data column, it says InternetShortcut

of course, you gots to be careful up in the registry but if the file type isn't working anyway then probably you don't have much to lose

I do have a registry back up, but that was before I installed several programs. If I load it, will my comp be in even deeper trouble than now?
