Are you at all possessive about ILX?

I mean, if a friend or work colleague (who doesn't already post here) asked you about what message boards you read and contribute to, would you tell them all about ILX or do you prefer to keep it as your own special place?

C J (C J), Sunday, 30 March 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm that guy who stands outside the Pentonville Rd exit of Kings Cross Station handing out flyers advertising it. I was banned from the other exit

dave q, Sunday, 30 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I tell all my friends about it, and a couple have shown up here because of it. It mystifies me a bit why so many of my friends have no interest.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 30 March 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i told a couple of people about ilx. dont see them posting anything but i imagine they may lurk now and then.

donna (donna), Sunday, 30 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

one of my friends comes, the rest don't. but i don't put anything personal here because anyone could read it.

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 30 March 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Possessive in theory, I guess. There are a few sundry twatfarmers I know whose presence would really put a damper on my enjoyment of this board if they showed up and became regulars (it's weird enough having people from my past posting here). But whatever; I wouldn't go out of my way to keep someone AWAY from ILX.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 30 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i wasn't, but now i'm very possessive of it.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 30 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yous know it's not very good, right?

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 30 March 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

FITE!

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 30 March 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yous know it's not very good, right?

Yes, I know.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 30 March 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Why would I? It's not mine.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 30 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Helltime Producto is entirely my fault. I have shown it to some other ppl and I think they might lurk about here occasionally but I doubt they post.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 30 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not that possessive abt it. I tend to mention it if I'm meeting ppl I know through the board, e.g. on the rare occasions I go to a FAP, rather than mentioning the board per se.

why so many of my friends have no interest

well, I find a surprisingly large number of ppl still, after all this time, aren't interested in the web (and not all of them are old!) tho of course not knowing yr friends, Martin, I don't know whether this applies to (m)any of them. Also, if you tell them about I Love Everything rather than ILX, its possible that the fact that one can discuss everything can put some ppl off...maybe some ppl aren't interested in something which they regard as nebulous and vague, but would show an interest if you said "I post to a board about x".

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Most people I know don't have time for boards like ILX.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:51 (twenty-three years ago)

most of the people I tell about it either (a) lurk and act like they're above posting (so, uh, why did you ask me what the deal with poster X was the other day if you're too busy to actually post?), (b) lurk and think the people on here are idiots, or (c) think I and everyone else involved on it is a Moonie.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:54 (twenty-three years ago)

how come Mr. Reynolds don't post? whatup with that?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I am posessive as fuck of it, for reasons which will be obvious to anyone who's been here for any length of time. I have had ABSOLUTELY AWFUL experiences introducing IRL people to the board. People who I meet through ILX who become IRL people are great, but they've got the understanding of this board and how I use it beforehand.

It's going to be quite difficult - several times over the weekend, I was tempted to tell Handsome Soundartist "Oh, that reminds me of the funniest thing on ILX..." but I stopped myself. Never again.

kate, Monday, 31 March 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've mentioned to a couple of people I wouldn't mind seeing posting on here but then they'll mention some board they post on and I'll go 'you're messageboard sucks. mine's alot cooler than your's."

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:03 (twenty-three years ago)

James, I imagine Mr. Reynolds is way too busy with paid work and his own blog!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:09 (twenty-three years ago)

also (a) he's not one of the folks I was talking about and (b) he has posted.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of my friends think that it's freaky to talk to people on the webbernet, and even freakier to meet up and sit in the pub talking ever more convoluted nonsense. At university, a couple of them seemed genuinely worried that I would end up dismembered in a couple of black binliners after meeting other Belle & Sebastian fans for picnics(!). The axis of tweevil, ho ho. Presumably this is due to ignorance, but it is rather amusing/scary to see the extent to which news horror stories have affected (even quite intelligent) people's perceptions of online discussion arenas.

Also, many people, even really nice ones, have little to no interest in talking endless if entertaining and occasionally informative rubbish, and would rather just switch off and not think about anything in particular when they're not working or studying. This is what soap operas are for. I find it's fairly common to have friends look at you like you're crazy when you go off on one about a random subject, and have been asked how I have time to come up with all my mental opinions, and to be honest, I'm a very lazy and not particularly leftfield kind of girl.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

So I guess my answer is: no, I have no need to be possessive about ILX, because the people I know who would be interested already know about it, and the ones who don't know about it aren't ever going to be interested. Haha I am a tiny locus in the graduate bourgeois/mentalist masseev Venn diagram.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

where are these post? and how's he busier than Chuck Eddy (I'll grant he's probably busier than Jess Harvell)? his wife should post too, I like Six Feet Under and am very disappointed that all the tv show threads peter out after 5 posts unless they're some damn british show or the fucking simpsons or buffy.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I told a few people I know from the 'net. But not my real life friends, mainly coz they don't use the 'net as much.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:19 (twenty-three years ago)

filthy little hobbitses! they stole the pressssshhhhhuuuusssssss! we wants it. we hates it!

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh I had a dream last night about Gollum. It was a cross between Lord of the Rings and Ape Escape. I played Merry.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha and who did merry play with, you filthy little hobbit!

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I think one friend might get a lot of it regarding films but I haven't bothered. this place is my secret.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a lurker, and very occasional poster--I've used, oh, about two dozen different names by now. Very simply: I don't have time. I have a family, am self-employed, etc., etc. But I'm addicted to this board. It's the best reality-based entertainment ever, because the characters are so compelling. The cast is so rich, so varied; the characters who warrant hugs are judiciously balanced by those who warrant an ass-kicking, but even the most loutish regularly display their emotional complexity. There is humor, passion, heartbreak, nobility, stupidity, and there are rather frequent occasions of bracing intelligence. I find myself (now and then) dreaming about you-all during the night. The plot turns are sneaky, easily missable, seem mostly to occur in the moderator thread, but they're all the more enticing for that. The return of James Blount (e.g.) went unaccompanied by trumpets and banners as far as I could tell, but to the reader it provided the satisfaction of a chord finally resolved. Of course, ILX's being addictive means that I hate it too: I took it off my shortcuts list and now have to access it by some around-the-barn maneuver that is about as effective as hiding the cigarettes in the back of the freezer. Another addiction is exactly what I do not need at this point in my life. So: Yeah! Hiss! Boo! Rah!

Pontius Pilate, Monday, 31 March 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

that's the best post i've read this morning!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I often suspect that the people who watch us like we're some kind of vastly entertaining internet soap opera FAR outnumber the actual posters by about 2 to 1. Sigh.

kate, Monday, 31 March 2003 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't tell people about ilx not out of a sense of ownership or possessiveness but rather because I doubt they'd be very interested.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

re: how come Mr. Reynolds don't post? whatup with that?

Mr Reynolds is probably very busy researching/ writing his post-punk book, that hundreds of ILXORs will buy when it is published. [The intention was to have it published circa November 2003 therefore in time for Christmas 2003]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I am VERY possessive about ILX. It's mine! All mine!!!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i often recommend it to friends of mine who enjoy music and fun as much as I do. THey haven't said they've posted or read any of it. I don't think they have time like I do.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I've told one or two friends about it, but I don't think they (a) remember or (b) have been here

luna (luna.c), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I've managed to get one friend to post (there are now two Winnipeg ILXers! YAY!!!). No one else thinks it's worth a crap. THEY SUXOR, or whatever it is that people say around here.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I can tell everyone I know...

Er, yes. That's no one, then!

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend Colin posts occasionally, and my friend Sara lurks.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I like to talk shit about my friends sometimes. I am a horrible friend, yes. But anyway, yet another reason not to point them to this site.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Why do you hate me, Sarah? **asks Bryan while ILX collectively sighs and clicks their back buttons**

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't talk crap about ILX0rs. You know you rule the school, Bry! I don't hate my friends either. I just get annoyed with them sometimes. I am picky picky picky.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry. I'm a little psycho today.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

" Of course, ILX's being addictive means that I hate it too: I took it off my shortcuts list and now have to access it by some around-the-barn maneuver" - ha, I've done this, taken if off my bookmarks with the thought 'if I have to type 'www.ilxor.com' I won't be there as much'. never works.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I just put the direct link into my personal toolbar at work and at home. I don't even pretend anymore. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I told a friend about this. That'd be Bryan. You all can tell what this means.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

also, trumpets and banners woulda been nice

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

IT FUCKS YOU UP FOR LIFE

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i think a lot of my friends got here of their own accord. though i did force duckling out of her lurker status.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I just hope my future-self doesn't encounter my past-self by way of ILX.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

really, its hard to be possessive about information when you're part of a hivemind.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I have corrupted a few people with my evil URLs. Damn me! Damn me to hell!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Three cheers for your most excellent words, Mr. Pontius Pilate. There's nothing more for me to add. Thank you. (And, um, you should post more - to heck with having a family and job and such *grin)
