I can't stand it. Goethe was a corny indie motherfucker.

Yes, that one is a bit over-the-top, to say the least.

i like goethe, but werther is, indeed, an overly self-referential, whining emo kid. still a good book, though.

classic for supposedly inspiring a lot of 18th century German emo kids to off themselves, but the book itself's a bit redundant nowadays.

if i remember correctly, goethe pretty much disowned werther when he grew older (heh heh, when he grew up!) it also inspired, among others, schiller and chateaubriand, both of whom also went through the emo kid-turned-elder statesmen phase.

so then, is goethe the andy partridge of european lit. -- which would make werther his white music and faust his skylarking?

"is goethe the andy partridge of european lit?" = grebtest q.asked in hist.o'hum.cult.ectect

(= it made me larf out loud briefly)

five years pass...

i'm convinced goethe conceived this all as one big joke to see if you'll kill yourself before werther does.

One of my favorite Daniel Pinkwater throwaway jokes is the reference to a character having written an extremely poorly-received book called The Sorrows of Young Werewolf.

one year passes...

i'm a little out-of-touch with the young people these days, so maybe someone with their finger more on the pulse of contemporary youth culture can fill me in - is it still considered "cool" ("dope," "off of the chain," whatever is the parlance) among the teen and teen-minded set to off oneself over one's unrequited love of a married woman?

i wd prefer to consider it "dude needs to man the fuck up" shit but I'm old so who knows?

Was just reading about how Werther started a huge memorabilia industry + moral panic about copycat suicides in 18th Century England.

Have you ever been so devastated about a breakup that you considered suicide?
