Fuck. I have to call people at my job, and even though I'm not trying to sell them anything everyone seems to think I'm either a telemarketer or a con-man. I feel like "FUCK YOU! Don't hang up yet mother fucker, you don't even know what I want yet! Maybe I'm calling to tell you that you won a million fucking dollars or that your fucking mother died but you'll never know cause you just fucking hung up as soon as you figured out that you don't know me! FUCK!"

hahaha! Yeah, here everyone has to call each other "Suck". It was confusing at first, but soon we developed ways of differentiating each other, like "yeah I was just talking to blonde Suck the other day" or "tall Suck told me you wanted to see me?".

Once when I was a temp they told me they had this assignment for me where I had to call 800 numbers. I thought, well that's not bad I just have to call 1-800 numbers and probably get info or something from the automated system. So I took the job, showed up and found out I had to call over 800 banks to find out whether they accepted out of state accounts. But I couldn't just ask I had to slyly ask by asking these other mundane questions first. I totally slammed it and did it in 1.5 days just because I hated it so much and wanted to get the hell out of there.

One time a telemarketer called back my mom saying she's was extremely rude. hahahahahaha But GOD ALMIGHTY she (and others) sometimes KEEP talking even though you have told them numerous times you are not interested. Anyway, I love calling up people (even for interviews).

i work for a furniture corporation in the scheduling department and it is unbelievable how rude people can be. the furniture is always too quick or slow to arrive, etc, etc. god i dont even want to talk about it on the weekend...

Even before I had this job I realized that telemarketers were just people with jobs so I'd be like "no, I'm not interested, and I realize you have to keep talking but I really have to go now thanks anyway bye!"

Doing some telephone research lately. Quite enjoy it actually. Feel like Tarden in Kosinski's 'Cockpit' when he makes those prank calls impersonating a commisar telling people they have to relocate 500 miles away and cuz it's a communist country they all believe him, "some were old and pleaded heart conditions and wanted to be left in peace but I didn't relent, fate had chosen them to be called" (half-remembered para) I let it ring up to 30 times, nobody gets away. Sometimes they get quite emotional with their complaints about the council etc and plead desperately for you to pass the info onto the relevant authorities, and thank you profusely for listening. Hints for anyone who wants to do this kind of work to pick up some easy £££ (great hours, no hassle!) - use the 'Milgram experiment' approach, being cheerful just invites contempt and hangups, just use a blank, steely tone and act like you're from the Serious Fraud Interrogation Unit or something

I once had a job doing telephone research for a marketing company. All the employees were total transient scum; nobody ever stayed there for more than a few weeks and everyone looked on in awe at the one guy who'd been there for A WHOLE YEAR. You'd have loved it, Dave Q -- we had to survey cancer patients and parents of sick little kids and ask them v. personal & invasive questions about the medical care they'd been receiving. Sort of sad, but I liked that part of the job better than:

a) the atrociously worded scripts we were forced to read from
b) the atrociously slow computers we relied on to read questions and enter data
c) the people on the other end who would call me a "fucking idiot" (gee, thanks, who do you think you are, my dad?) upon hearing me stammering trying to correct the scripts' awful grammar/phrasing (even in my darkest moments I've never stopped being a pedant) or cursing under my breath trying to come to grips with an ancient computer that took ten years to get to the next screen...

I have to call people every single day at work. Usually for inane bits of information, but fairly often I have to be the guy to call people to tell them they owe us money...for insurance. To them I am EVIL LIKE THE FROO-ITS OF THE DEVIL. And I'm k-cool with that.
