Girly Sports Style

Here is a thread to discuss the girls' summer style 2003. Question #1: should I go for a light blue Adisas zip up or a light blue Fred Perry zip up? Question #2: What looks good with white and red soccer socks?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

Vicky got a lovely FP hoody in old school tracksuit material witha few vertical stripes in a deep red colour and the lining in the hood is white towelling, it rocks.

chris (chris), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:26 (twenty years ago) link

1. adidas.
2. nothing. (take that how you will.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:26 (twenty years ago) link

>#2: What looks good with white and red soccer socks?

Girls 16 and under, exclusively.

fletrejet, Monday, 21 April 2003 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

I think FR and I tried that one on at 99X in blue. It was nice.

Question #3: Are khaki golf shorts taking the movement to literally?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

Where do you live, flatrejet?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:30 (twenty years ago) link

nothing could take this style too literally and be a bad thing.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

#4 white terry cloth kangol bucket hat versus as of yet undeterminded sun visor?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:38 (twenty years ago) link

we're getting into raver territory here now

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

haha i saw this thread and was going to post "mary to thread" but it was you that started it!

how about a 1970s blue and yello cycling top? perhaps i shall dig mine out

gareth (gareth), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

man, I've got white and red soccer socks, remnants of my high school team days.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

Question #1: should I go for a light blue Adisas zip up or a light blue Fred Perry zip up?

If either is velour or stretch terry, do not buy. Torch the goods, and if the store goes up as well, c'est la vie.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:51 (twenty years ago) link

I am in the US. Why?

fletrejet, Monday, 21 April 2003 18:52 (twenty years ago) link

I thought she meant what U.S. state, as in "fifteen'll get ya' twenty."

felicity (felicity), Monday, 21 April 2003 18:56 (twenty years ago) link

I was just wondering in what state, city, etc. one of such level minded highly informed political and fashion advice resides. Aka bc I am nosy:)
(Also I was hoping for some clause in which I could escape the over 16 rule, as I am doing with me white tennies today, thanks to Georgian Justice.)

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

Confidential to j.lu: I am looking at polyester. Is your advice ecopolitcally or fashion minded?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

Cycling tops are too tight fit for me, that is to say, I haven't seen any turn up in Japanese magazines lately.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

hey Mary, your kind words re: my white jacket yesterday were just the self-confidence booster I needed pre-date! THanks!

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 19:13 (twenty years ago) link

my pleasure: you were rockin' the white zip up look -- i hope it proved effective!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:15 (twenty years ago) link

Well, more specifically Tampa, FL. I am completely unfashionable, which makes me a superior judge of fashion, because I am outside the fashion-community's groupthink, and therefore, not afraid to point out when people look ridiculous.

fletrejet, Monday, 21 April 2003 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

Mary, well it was effective in that I didn't get laughed at.

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 19:28 (twenty years ago) link

Style-minded, although based on contrarian principles.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 21 April 2003 19:29 (twenty years ago) link

The FP was nicer material but not in my size so I went for the Adidas warm-up. Also threw in a beige Adidas visor. Gave the soccer socks a miss (not ready yet) but picked up a couple of thin knee socks in grey and light blue.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 21:45 (twenty years ago) link

Question #2: What looks good with white and red soccer socks?
A guitar?

Any suggestions on how to adapt girly sports style to Kentucky?
Horsy sports style?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:21 (twenty years ago) link

Question #1: should I go for a light blue Adisas zip up or a light blue Fred Perry zip up?

The light blue Adidas, because I had a light blue Adidas zip up from the seventies that was cruelly stolen from me! The new ones are not as lovely and can't replace it but they are still nice.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:27 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah I went with the Adidas. It's not all that but should do for a summer jacket. Light blue is in the stores now if you can bear it.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:30 (twenty years ago) link

Visors are horrible. Don't get one, Mary.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:31 (twenty years ago) link

After reading the puma thread I would like a red one and the little red Puma bag. Unfortunately I don't think Adidas makes them in red.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:39 (twenty years ago) link

RM do keep up:) I already bought a khaki adidas visor.

Nicole, I think I may have seen a red one at the store today, but maybe it was white with red stripes. They also had the j.lu hated velour red.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:49 (twenty years ago) link

I am not down with this Georgian Justice.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:53 (twenty years ago) link

Rosemary next time I must bring you with me as my fashion consultant.

Nicole, you are in luck. Just checked the online store and the red superstar jacket is yours for the having.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 01:56 (twenty years ago) link

Yay fashion consulting!

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:05 (twenty years ago) link

that looks like price harry!

i need fashionista girlz like you in chicago.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:22 (twenty years ago) link

one vote for white terry cloth visor, hold the Kangol

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:23 (twenty years ago) link

Nicole, you are in luck. Just checked the online store and the red superstar jacket is yours for the having.

Yay! Thanks Mary -- off I go to check out the online store.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 11:08 (twenty years ago) link

what material are these tops? my initial reaction would be to plump for adidas over fred perry. though i cant help but feel a dark brown/light brown combination would be even better.

what is wrong with velour? i like it

the visor is definitely a good thing, though i think the bucket hat has got good points too. you cannot go wrong with hats really

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 14:02 (twenty years ago) link

What looks good with white and red soccer socks? - Clogs!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:50 (twenty years ago) link

Mary, wait until you see my outfit for Buffython.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

Clogs don't look good with anything.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

I just have never really understood the appeal of clogs, they're like the Julia Roberts of shoes.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 18:22 (twenty years ago) link

ha ha gareth i already got the adidas one as i explained upthread:) it is polyester but feels satiny so covers the sports trend and the satin trend in one fell swoop. the fp was a nicer heavier material but a bit small for me.

#5 what goes with white tennis skirts? i have seen so far either light blue or hot pink tank tops. any other suggestions? accessories?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 19:25 (twenty years ago) link

a racquet, a can of fuschia Penn tennis balls, a gold chain and a tennis pro attractively draped over your shoulders, rowr

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 19:37 (twenty years ago) link

A brown top goes with a tennis skirt, Mary.

I'm saying it to save us all from waiting for Gareth.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 19:40 (twenty years ago) link

what goes with white tennis skirts?

Steffi, for one thing. Gabriela Sabatini too. Meghan Shaughnessy, ok. Chanda Rubin. what? oh. never mind.

(polo shirts of course. to the aforementioned pastels, i might add lime green, but i have a feeling that could be very wrong. black and tan.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 04:46 (twenty years ago) link

Oh! You need that special tennis underwear, with the pocket in the back.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 04:59 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't hate your shirt felicity! jeez I'm saying all the wrong things today, aren't I? : (

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:36 (twenty years ago) link

You're such a prick, stence.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:42 (twenty years ago) link

Well I assumed if you liked it you would have said so. That's okay. It is a hateful shirt. It is from the 19-"hate"-ies.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:43 (twenty years ago) link

I love hate though! I'd probably love your shirt. I told my mom about my quest to find a little-size Misfits shirt. She has bought me one with the Jem characters, the Misfits. It's aces!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

It's not nice to make me cry right before I have a meeting. Or any other time, really.

*sniff*

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

Speaking of girly sports style we need Sambas!!!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 18:47 (twenty years ago) link

Ally, did you get your soccer shoes yet? I called you from City Sports b/c you can buy one pair and get $20 off the second pair plus I have 10% off there and I would have bought you the Sambas for your birthday but I don't know your size.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 15:54 (twenty years ago) link

As already noted, my cell phone doesn't work within the confines of my possibly deadly asbestos work building and did not receive the message until too late :( :(

BUT! Just in case the whole thread is wondering, I'm a girls size 10.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:23 (twenty years ago) link

Shouldn't the title of this thread be inverted to "@*#&#&*#?"

Roman (Roman), Friday, 2 May 2003 06:45 (twenty years ago) link

Felicity, I saw your PF patches at Alphabets -- they are mad cute. Have you sewn/ironed them onto your hippy style jeans yet?

(There's also really cute PF jewelry -- necklaces and bracelets on the other side of the store.)

What goes wrong when trying to approach Tatu/Tutu?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 03:36 (twenty years ago) link

What goes wrong when trying to approach Tatu/Tutu?

What goes wrong is you are being driven around NoLiTa in a Jetta by a mad Italian. Yo, where's the parking at?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 03:42 (twenty years ago) link

Mary (Mary), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:21 (twenty years ago) link

Tell me your outfits! Or better yet, show me.

They seem to have gotten a whole truckload of Lady Adisas stuff marked down to $12-$14 at the Filene's Basement in the low 20s on Sixth Avenue.

I checked out the hot pink Islandia jacket at UO -- it is nice.

I'm all into the old-school/retro baseball logos terry strechy headband now. Mine is red white & blue 1970s White Sox, very Richie "The Baumer" Tennenbaum. I think it is from Modell's.

there is a danny clowes comic about Chicago (wrt: the "belushi-fication" of) that in one of the panels I think I remember has a guy sitting at a bar wearing that same exact headband.

Fall edition. Thinking of which football kit would be the most fashion forward: Manchester City would seem to go well with my eyes...

http://www.coresdofutebol.hpg.ig.com.br/ENG_Man_City_kit1_02_03.gif

Why are most of the good teams red? Dave B recommended Wimbledon and Matt DC Tottenham and Charlton but my faves so far are Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham, Leeds. The colors I like: blue and green. Recs?

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

I decided against the Man City kit and the whole football shirt thing in general. Though it was lovely, shiny, and light blue, it had a giant ad across the chest saying FIRST ADVICE inside a balloon quotation.

On a related note, I can state that Carnaby St. has remade itself into ground zero for girly sport style/UK edition -- Ben Sherman, Lonsdale, Merc, and lots of other retro trad stylers that there wasn't enough time to investigate.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 15 September 2003 22:02 (twenty years ago) link
