He did a pretty good job of acting stoned in "American Beauty".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:06 (twenty years ago) link

I swear, does getting an oscar for best male actor just FORCE you to start sucking? Nic Cage, Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington...all of them jumped on the crap train after picking one up. I hope this isn't the case for Adrien Brody. To be taken at such a young age.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 02:09 (twenty years ago) link

Spacey never seems to deviate from his stock-in-trade, head titlting, sarcastic line delivery. This has become tiresome and has rendered this once fine actor unwatchable. He does not help his case by repeated smarmy appearences on Letterman.

Area Man No Longer Playing Up Resemblance To Kevin Spacey
FLAGSTAFF, AZ—Put off by such films as The Life Of David Gale, The Shipping News, and K-PAX, local insurance salesman Brian Vandervelt, 37, is no longer playing up his resemblance to Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey. "From the time of Glengarry Glen Ross up through American Beauty, I was loving all the Spacey comparisons," Vandervelt told reporters Tuesday. "But after four years of smug, self-righteous crap like Pay It Forward, it's a different story." Until Spacey stops playing repellently soulful saviors of humanity, Vandervelt said he will play up his resemblance to a young Bob Newhart.

Why hate him? His performance of "Mind Games" on some 9/11 telethon/John Lennon tribute. Also, the closeted thing. What's the big deal? It's not like he plays superhot macho straight guy romantic leads.

A friend of mine went to see Fleetwood Mac at the Hollywood Bowl with Edward Norton and Kevin Spacey. Just the three of them. He said that Spacey a) was rude and totally ignored him, b) was really disappointed that Courtney was out of town and kept bringing it up, c) changed into his "rock concert clothes" [a satin jacket and a beanie] in the limo and d) kept shifting around uncomfortably in his seat and pulling down the beanie when he thought he was being recognized even though he was in the VIP section and surrounded by other celebrities.

He sounds like such an ass.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 22 April 2003 08:08 (twenty years ago) link

also, he needs some hot anal sex. i mean everyone does, but spacey esp.

this is my ultimate thread - my hate for spacey knows no bounds.

He seems like he practices his lines in front of a mirror instead of with other actors.

he's a total fucking narcissist, that's why. Arthurs story makes me extremely happy.

wow, i had no idea there was so much Spacey hate. Me, i'm indifferent - but wow. You'd think he was Keanu with all this talk.

I also dispute the claim that Crowe went to shit after the Oscar - Beautiful Mind and Master and Commander were both good.

He was good in Wiseguy and The Ref. He's just one of those actory actors who becomes insufferable after fame hits. Like Frasier Crane. And then they think they can do no wrong cuz they are GENIUS and finally everyone recognizes it. He has a lot to answer for though. Pay It Forward alone is grounds for violent torture.

Actor Kevin Spacey will reprise his role as villain Lex Luthor in action sequel Superman: Man of Steel, according to an industry report.

He agreed to revisit the role he took in last year's Superman Returns after meeting director Bryan Singer, said Hollywood publication Variety.

Spacey, artistic director of London's Old Vic theatre, denied that he would soon quit film acting.

"I love movies and will continue to make movies when I can," he said.

But the American Beauty star admitted: "My priorities have changed. Theatre is the number one thing in my life."

Superman Returns was the first movie about the comic book hero for 19 years, and became a global box office hit.

Superman: Man of Steel is due to be released in 2009.

Spacey is also due to appear in Telstar, a biopic of record producer Joe Meek.

He told Variety that he would play financier Major Banks in the forthcoming movie, based upon a successful West End play.

nine months pass...

wow everyone hates Kevin

Disgraced actor Kevin Spacey is enduring a career low at the box office this weekend.

The ensemble crime-drama Billionaire Boys Club quietly opened Friday in eight theaters scattered in select states across the U.S. The indie film earned an abysmal $126 for the day and another $162 on Saturday for a two-day total of just $287 following its release on premium VOD last month, according to those with access to theater grosses. For the full weekend, Billionaire Boys Club could have trouble making much more than $425.

Put another way, that's a per location average of roughly $53 for the weekend. If going by the average ticket price to date of $9.27, that means fewer than six people showed up in each cinema. And it's by far the worst showing Spacey's career. Titles that debut first on VOD aren't generally big draws at the box office, but Billionaire Boys Club is faring particularly poorly.

Ansel Elgort and Taron Egerton share top billing in Billionaire Boys Club, followed by Spacey. Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, Cary Elwes, Judd Nelson and Billie Lourd also star in the movie, which is based on the real-life club of the same name that made headlines in Southern California in the 1980s. Spacey plays real-life Beverly Hills high-roller Ron Levin.

Great takedown from Nathan Rabin:

Despite Spacey’s conception of himself as a lovable leading man, the oily probable sex criminal was typecast as a bad guy, a villain and a supporting player early in his career for a very good reason. He’s an extremely unlikable performer. As an actor, Spacey just doesn’t naturally convey arrogance and intelligence: he conveys the intimidating, belligerent, badgering intelligence of someone who knows exactly how smart they are and is a total asshole about it. That’s what made Spacey’s casting in The Usual Suspects so inspired: Spacey’s brilliant assholes use their ferocious intelligence as a sometimes deadly weapon. They act as if the rules that govern the actions of mere mortals do not apply to them because they’re smarter, sharper, better, more evolved and civilized than the rest of us.

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 03:44 (five years ago) link

Fantastic piece, though I don't think it's a takedown - more like a dissection (vivisection?). The graf you excerpted is otm, he was fantastic in the roles he was typecast in. Just the idea of him doing an impression of Jack Lemmon is nuts.
