we have jim-o to thank for amazing album covers like that. my (fairly square) dad owns that record but i've never got around to asking him if it "reminds him of the 60's".
also my best friend when i was in my early teens made his own mini-comics. he sent one to jim (as he was a huge fan) and jim sent back a very nice hand-written letter with a bunch of drawings on it. the letter was very encouraging and my friend kept it on his wall for ages as inspiration to become an underground cartoonist. sadly he now likes to listen to r. kelly and crash his BMW.

this guy is so awesome: he fully collaborated with me a conspiracy to get my boyfriend a birthday present.
for my graduation, my bf commissioned a drawing of pushpaw walking along thinking about pupshaw (we are both big fans of woodring's work, but the P&P characters/stories are our favourites). we had talked about how a companion piece - pupshaw strolling along thinking about pushpaw - would be awesome. bf finally got round to emailing woodring who agreed to do it, but i intercepted and asked him to my bf that he no longer could. he come up with a fairly elaborate story (something about now being contracted to a gallery). so when the piece turned up, my bf was blown away. also, he'd made the drawing on the back of another discarded pencil sketch, which was even cooler.

I'd like to get into this guy, but his art reminds me a bit too much of a bad trip I had when I was eighteen.

All-time favorite comix artist and a personal hero (though I've never met him). Seems to have more-or-less given up on the narrative stuff, which is a shame, but I happy with what he's given me. Heard this past spring that he runs a regular Tuesday-night drawing workshop in the University District (Seattle), open to the general public. Always meant to drop by, but never got around to it. ;;

when i was like 16 or so i sent jim woodring a letter (lol old people and their pre-email lives) asking for advice on how to become a cartoonist. (back when i thought this was a.) a possibility and b.) a good idea.) he sent me a "how to" list on the back of one of his original 8X10 layout pages for a frank story. thankfully this list has proven useful regardless of whatever i've been doing with my life. stuff like "be prepared to live as cheaply as possible."
in short jim woodring is precisely the sort of artistic hero you want to have when yr a teenager, i.e. pragmatic but encouraging and an all around decent human being.

the new frank book is incredible... because i couldn't wait to read it, i bought the Norwegian edition back when it came out in february, but the one fantagraphics published is much nicer from a book-design perspective. it's more about manhog than frank, although that's not necessarily a bad thing. it's a pretty bizarre reading experience to follow woodring's wordless narrative this long instead of the shorter stories that he used to do. he did a story a couple years ago called "the lute string" that, in retrospect, almost feels like a warmup to this one.

For thems of you in NYC, Jim will be signing Weathercraft at Desert Island in Williamsburg on Saturday the 19th. It's my friend Gabe's comix store, very cool shop.
I wanna add to the Jim Woodring = Prince Among Men testimonials above. I moved to Seattle in 1990 as a nobody 20 year old cartoonist, and a week or two after arriving somehow I found out about this party at Gary Groth's house in the way northern suburbs. I was still staying at my aunt and uncle's on the Olympic peninsula in Chimacum. I ferried and drove to the party and was all starstruck by everybody. Jim and I had corresponded a tiny bit about some minicomics I'd sent him but he was totally awesome to my insignificant and mawkish self at that party and talked to me tons. I stayed there way too late and was bummed about the drive and ferry home, so Jim invited me to crash in the spare room at his & Mary's (& young Max's) house. Next morning he took me out to breakfast in Edmonds where the ferry is & we talked about Beefheart and metaphysics and shit. This is by far one of my most cherished memories of being in comics. Have never had as extensive an interaction with him since but it doesn't matter. Jim rules.
