people noticing grooming changes

So, for three days now I have had moustache and goatee, as part of my transformation into the Count of Monte Cristo, of course. I also trimmed my sideburns from muttonchop-jaw-touchers to neat little commas that stop above my earlobe.
But, having not only dined with my entire family, but also been at work two days, and done some socializing, I am baffled that nobody's said anything until just now, when the one against whom I will eventually avenge myself said, "so, experimenting with facial hair, huh?" before subjecting me to the typical tortures.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Both the muttonchops and the goat are things to fear. Your co-workers and family are probably just doing their best to avoid encouraging you.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean C=OTM

Sorry to say it Horace, but this is a BAD sign. Off to the barbershop with you.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a beard once, but my mustache was just terrible and wispy.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody ever notices when I cut my hair. Bizarrely, though, I always get comments like "Did you get your hair cut?" when I haven't changed a thing.

hstencil, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, it's not exactly a grooming change, but I got glasses (really obvious, dark-framed, super nerd-girl glasses) for the first time in my adult life in September. My boss, who sees me every day, said to me, "Did you get a new haircut?" Uh, no, but thanks for noticing something.

Jodi (Celerina), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, of course I know these are not aesthetically-pleasing facial accessories. That's the point. I want to instill fear and awe in all those come across my countenance.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Once I lost 60 pounds. A coworker said, "Have you been working out?" Yeah, slightly.

Mandee, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I never wear white shirts. Today I am wearing one.
I just spilled coffee on it. Everyone will notice.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

No one can notice any grooming changes on my part, cuz I don't groom.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gotten kinda shaggy myself. Am considering doing something drastic about, but comments have generally been positive. Help me.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Jodi, The exact same thing happened to me when I first got my glasses last year.

I lost @15 pounds and was upset when someone asked me, "So, have you been working out or something?"

I don't tend to notice when boys get their hair cut unless it's pretty drastic.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody even said anything about my hair being black. It's bizarre.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally is a liar. It's the first thing I said to her. Along with something like, "looks great, goth" or something.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

This morning a girl said, "Your glasses are nice, did you just get them?" Yeah, just about two months ago.

Horace the only reason you spilled coffee is that you were wearing a white shirt. It's one of those everything-MUST-go-wrong laws.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It's weird, people noticed my new shoes today. Oddly, the first person to really notice them pointed out how they looked like "saddle shoes", but since they're canvas lo-top sneaks it really makes me wonder what she's been smoking out front of the building.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant nobody at work but I should've said that, I'm sorry Mary. You and Matos noticed my black hair. YANC3Y, on the other hand, said he thought my hair was always this color??? Perhaps I should stop meeting him in dark bars and alleyways.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I bleached my hair a few days ago, and this guy came into the grocery store where I work and said, "Wow, you changed your hair." And a little while ago, I cut about an inch off all around, and a woman came into the bakery where I also work and said "Ooh, you got your hair cut!" I do not even know these people.

kirsten (kirsten), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a really weird, very faint birthmark on my forehead (like a stain, not a mole) that seems to get a little more prominent every six months or so. I can tell if it's showing again when people start asking me if I've banged my head or if I've been swapping forehead-hickies.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I usually wear earth tones, because the absorb coffee stains so much the better. Though, I don't know if I ever do spill in my office fatigues.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, my recurring friend kind of looks like a coffee (or more like tea) stain. So I thought you were referring to my post there. Then I looked upthread and everything was resolved neatly.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I dyed my hair (not drastically, just a touchup) last weekend and one guy has noticed. He grew up with six older sisters, though, so he's well-trained. Also usually I go nuts with the color so maybe co-workers are used to more crazy changes. Or maybe they're bored with me acting like I'm 16 with all the hair dye.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I wore my hair in a ponytail for the first few months while I was working at a big hardware chain as a cashier. (This was on the advice of my mother, who insisted that it would make me look more professional. Meanwhile, 75% of my female co-workers had visible tatoos and had to be persuaded not to wear short shorts and tank tops to work.) The first day I wore my hair loose, I asked someone if they noticed any difference.

"You're wearing makeup?"

(I've been wearing makeup every day of my life since I was twelve.)

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

(I don't want to hijack this thread, but what is the average age that girls start wearing makeup nowadays? My mother was absolutly livid when I started--I'd started a few months before she was going to tell me that I would be forbidden from wearing it until I was sixteen. She soon relented, and gave me a nice makeup set for Christmas that year.)

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

when i wore my new raf simons striped (and i mean boldly STRIPED)sweater pple asked "hey, you got new pants? nice erik!"

erik, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry if this is a rude question, but...

(I've been wearing makeup every day of my life since I was twelve.)

Why?

I can understand putting on a little something to make yourself feel glamourous when you're going out, but every single day of your life seems a bit excessive. Do people really do this?

OK, maybe this needs its own thread?

kate, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Kirsten, I am concerned about this bleaching thing.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

you should bleach your hair, nick.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

well im growing in my white boy fro' and no one's noticed yet. Its not quite at fro proportions yet, its more along the lines of a tight gerry curl.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:20 (twenty-three years ago)

A few weeks ago I went out without gel in my hair which makes it basically go Mark Hamyll/Luke Skywalker style, and people kept asking me what I'd done. It was embarassing, I now feel with gel in it that I am living a lie.

come, join the dark side of the voibe--together we will rule whatever.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, this bleaching thing makes me look like a Cabbage Patch Kid, but not in an altogether horrible way.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

This probably isn't the right thread for this, but, have any of you boys around here ever gone to a spa (or wherever it is that you go for such a thing) to get your back waxed? Mine isn't super hairy, but it has hair on it and it looks gross. Did you feel really stupid getting it done? How were the backzits afterwards? Were they nice to you?

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Come on! I want to be able to take off my shirt and show off my newly buff bod!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a lot of body hair. When I first got it, I thought that I would one day get it removed, but now that I am fully grown, I think it adds to my roguishness.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, this bleaching thing makes me look like a Cabbage Patch Kid, but not in an altogether horrible way.

my brane hurtz

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

you should drink some bleach, nick.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Bryan, are you lifting weights? ;(

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I was mostly kidding, Mary, but yes, a little. Mostly kidding about the buff part (don't think I could get to be quite like that). Sorry about that.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I once did some radio commercials for a laser hair removal place and the owners took me around the place for a tour and demonstration. They said that they get a lot of state troopers and military types who have the back of their head done so that they don't have to get trim-ups all the time. Then a lot of them are so taken with it that they get their backs done as well. It seemed pretty safe and easy, but it is expensive.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you, teeny! I'll probably just go to the spa in the salon I go to to get it done (wax). I'll be ok.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, they get laser hair removal on the entire back of their head?? That must look awful.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd assumed this thread would complain of people commenting on grooming/appearance changes as that's what usually gets to me, rather than people not noticing. I don't like that almost everyone seems to think it's okay or even expected that they should offer their opinion...well sometimes if people pay a lot of attention to changes in your appearance it can make you a bit anxious about changing stuff. Mind you it annoys me that I feel like I could start wearing a wig, have a breast removed and a tatoo on my forehead and my boyfriend might only notice after a week or so. I think he's only commented on what I was wearing once this year, a disparaging comment.

elizabeth anne marjorie, Wednesday, 14 May 2003 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I am always the first one to notice a change in my friends'/coworkers' grooming.

defunctive. Agnes-Mabel-Becky. the '27 Yankees.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 14 May 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha-HA!
One co-worker just said to me, "Horace..." stroking his own chin, "it doesn't work. It makes you look evil."
Which is, of course, what I want.
