people who go on about their drug experiences - classic or dud

Glasto is approaching, and some of my pals have already started reminiscing at great length about how addled they were on previous occasions.

This is DUD - surely?

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud anywhere other than Glasto, where it becomes classic.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

well, the clue is in the phrase "go on about", i mean, this implies relentless monotony, no? i mean, peoples experiences in life are interesting, and that does include drug experiences, but its all in the context isnt it? if someone is just banging on, well it doesnt really matter what they're banging on about?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud anywhere other than Glasto, where it becomes classic.

experience shows that this is not the case.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I sometimes recount my past experiences with either my b/f or people that I shared those experiences with. It is quite a rare occurance, but it does happen when reminiscing about old times. I do not brag about it as some do, but for those that I care to discuss it with, it is classic.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, in general I find people who talk about their drug experiences to be boring as hell anyway. Sober observers talking about other people's drug experiences is often far more interesting.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Gareth is right here. If someone's being a fucking bore change the conversation or find a reason to walk away. What does it matter what the topic is? A bore is a bore of course of course.

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

pls don't get me wrong here, I don't spout endlessly about this, as you rightly say this would be v boring. I simply recount stuff when the conversation goes that way, as I said, it is a rare conversation, but does happen sometimes.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Though if your bore is a talking horse, it's possible that he isn't on acid...

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't get why drugs are always singled out as the most boring thing to talk about, people talk about every boring thing ever on here & they don't get beat down for it.

duane (doorag), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Pinkpanther. If it's part of nostalgia and friendship and its funny or entertaining then I see no problem. But banging on about quantities consumed or how mashed you are is on a level with beermonsterism.

Banging on about Glastonbury is never anything other than vile.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with duane. Hey, i'll be glad to talk about drug experiences with you. Or my cats. Or needlepoint. Just let me know when I get boring, okay?

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ok cool now i can tell yall about my last 10 overdoses in sickening detail, cool ok

duane (doorag), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

duane honey, you are cool. Whatever you want to discuss with me, I shall listen. :)

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry i guess "jokes" like that are pretty alienating & repulsive & all the more reason to think ppl shd just shut up about that shit, i shouldn't've said it

duane (doorag), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

cause thats all i intended that as, sorry again

duane (doorag), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks tho s

duane (doorag), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There IS a special kind of boring associated with talking about drug experiences though - precisely because the experience is often impossible to describe in words which leads some people to ramble on ineffectually for ever in the hope that someone will finally 'get it', and no one ever does.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I once smoked a spliff and it was this |-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| big!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's definitely dud if you're speaking to someone who hasn't shared the experience in some way.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I tend to not even mention my past experiences and experiments with drugs cause I know that this kind of conversation leads me, inevitably, to show the conservative and moralist side of me. Saying things that, say 10 years would have made me laugh for hours, is DUD.

francesco, Monday, 16 June 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the singer not the song, def.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 16 June 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't mind most drug conversations - it's only ones about ecstasy that irritate me for some reason

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Drugs provide plenty of scope for being boring - but as has been said they have no monopoly onbeing boring. Certainly the "I was really baked" variety is dull as hell but the "I was so baked I did something quite stupid and entertaining that I would not have done otherwise" variety has the potential to be amusing.

Like the time my stoner friend ate a fruit scone made into a sandwich with duck pate and peanut butter.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 16 June 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah exactly - i much prefer stories rather than people sitting round going "yeah isn't being on acid great huh huh huh"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Like the time my stoner friend ate a fruit scone made into a sandwich with duck pate and peanut butter.

Like that but interesting, you mean?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man you wouldve thought that was great if a STRAIGHT person had done it!!

duane (doorag), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I once sat for about ten minutes while relatively sober watching someone tripping and attempting to open a door while turning the light switch on and off. It went from amusing to pathetic to amusing again before I eventually took pity and opened the door.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

dude.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

my stoner friend ate a fruit scone made into a sandwich with duck pate and peanut butter

Your stoner friend isn't a chef in New York, is he? Say, at aKa Cafe?

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

when it comes to posting in public forums, an absolute dud.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, I remember one time...

No. NO. NO! I don't give a weasel's fart about people's drug experiences, and my own are equally tiresome. DUD.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Archel is dead right on this one. Most trips can be very personal experiences and so it's like trying to describe a dream to someone (everyone gets bored listening to my dream stories as well, funnily enough).

Cool for group trips though.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The most, um, 'educational' drug experience I can think of was being in a car with a guy who'd drank at least two pints of beer, smoked a couple of spliffs and had a couple of lines of speed... and dropped an acid tab half an hour before. I thought I was going to die. And he seemed to enjoy my fear immensely.

Just say no!

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

people who provide you with a running commentary on how their drug experience is going WHILE IT HAPPENS - classic or dud

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

's the holy grail of interactive entertainment, innit.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

you people watch reality tv! and DICUSS IT ON THE INTERNET!!

duane (doorag), Monday, 16 June 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

discuss it even

duane (doorag), Monday, 16 June 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

people who provide you with a running commentary on how their drug experience is going WHILE IT HAPPENS - classic or dud

Dud, o'course...assuming they are not so high, they can't string a proper sentence together.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 16 June 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

And I just kept forgetting I was holding this tangerine life-saver, and dropping it, but when I remembered to taste it, it was really cool. . .

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 16 June 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

sometimes people who talk relentlessly about their drug experiences can be entertaining, but not for the reasons they think. like G*VIN SH*W!

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 16 June 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

As pinkpanther said upthread, it's classic when you're discussing old shared experiences with friends. Hell, it was a bonding experience same as any other. But I wouldn't want to foist my stories on others though, mostly because I am aware that they are always dull to those who weren't involved. On a couple of occasions where the drug anecdote has been particularly entertaining I have broken this rule, but it has to be a killer anecdote for this to occur.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 16 June 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

o man, rockist, me too, only mine was like one of those green ones.

DUD then.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 16 June 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic when "people" = Timmy, the kid who lives down the way from me.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 16 June 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

as far as my drug experiences go, they're pretty samey and boring. if you're going to tell a drug story, it has to be real juicey. like about famous people injecting drugs in their penis.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 16 June 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Or famous people injecting Jack Daniels into their penis?

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

that would be a startling misunderstanding of the purpose of urination.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Penises, I should say. I'm not implying that famous people have only one penis that they pass back and forth to each other whenever they need it, or anything like that.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

They used to, but he married Annette Bening.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Drug rambling bores me... without it sounding too much like sour grapes after my recent experiences, my ex-flatmate and another friend of mine banged on about being mashed or other people being mashed on pills ALL the time (well around me anyway) and did so in an exclusionary way that left me sitting in the room, quiet, feeling stupid. And they got miffed when I said it upset me.

On the other hand, telling a story that in itself is funny, and just happeend to be due to drugs, is classic. I still wet myself thinking of that distressed cow story Ronan mentioned a while back.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

in almost all cases, a little more awareness on the part of the narrator that what they're saying is not nearly as fascinating to others as it is to themselves would go a long way.

rener (rener), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

you people watch reality tv! and DICUSS IT ON THE INTERNET!!

I don't.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Rener is so OTM, if you are talking to someone that had never experienced anything like it, it is so classiclly dud.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

it's pretty bad even if you have.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

good morning sunshine

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

DV - oh yeah it is, but then i only talk to people who were with me at the time in a reminiscing about the old days kind of way. Usually brought up when lots of alcohol has been consumed & someone says 'remember the time when...' that is the only instance I will talk abuot drug experiences unless specifially asked.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that's alright.

it's people who feel obliged to expound at great length on whatever spangles they took last night that get my goat.

they are usually the same people who just like to expound at length.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)
