That makes it sound like a youth hostel which is about right minus a functioning roof.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i walked into that obvious misinterpretation
obviously i'm referring to occupying an abandoned building to avoid having to pay rent, etc

robin (robin), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

what kind of people do it

the rich and famous, of course.

When i was in london a lot of my friends squatted. Some had very nice places and you couldn't tell they were squats. Basically, from what I understand it is completely legal there (maybe I was told wrong) just as long as you are not caught breaking and entering, which is where you would get into trouble. My American friend actually started a woman's squat out in Streatham I think. They basically walked around neighborhoods for awhile to find the empty places that stayed empty. They eventually found this old Buddhist residence (they thought this because there were lots of paintings of Buddha on the walls). They broke in from one of the windows and set up house. There was even electricity for which they could not figure out who was paying it. Basically, in the first few months it is really important for at least 1 person to be home at all times so you do not lose it. And for mail to be sent there. Someone actually did come to the door once and knocked and asked if they were squatting, but they left and never came back. I am sure somewhere on the web you can find squatters rights.

I could've sworn that I read that Rosario Dawson and her mom were squatting in some apartment in the Lower East Side (or the Alphabets) that the city eventually just sold to the tenants for a dollar... they'd been there for 20 years or something. But I can't find anything on the internet about it so I prolly just made it up.

Well, usually after squatting somewhere for a certain amount years (is it 7, 10, ?) it legally makes it yours since you have put money into the space. But maybe that is just in England.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 19 June 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

also in the US, depending on locale - different cities have different laws (and this is obviously limited to cities as its not really a suburbab phenomena)

squatting can take diferent forms. in philly i actually saw my neighborhood improve because the squatters were fixing up the properties, refurbishing and eventually buyinmg from the city and owning as coops. these were the politically active anrachists however, as opposed to the crusties - stupid uppermiddle class kids who decided squatting, begging, thieving and nonbathing were the only alternatives to the ills of society. idjits.

sorry, excuse the rant.

Squatting: Win a house! (And how not to lose one)

about 2 summers ago a bunch of "anarchists" squatted a buiilding near where I live and it got picked-up by the news, I thought about giving them a big bag of rice for support /the police were on their case for some reason and the mayor by a weird turn of event gave them free rent somewhere else: unlimited bail and all.
but , being poser anarchists, they fucked it up by makinkg some sort of a noisy party and got evicted. It could have been the birth of a new social institution, an unprecedented case of cohabitation between minoritary anarchists and benevolant triumphant capitalist but they had tu fuck it up. fuck'em!

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i'm doing at the moment, technically. you asked on that other thread, basically i havent paid any rent since april, though i left my deposit as last months rent at beginning of june. everyone in the house is leaving mid july, and its being re-let, so i will leave before that. what started out as difficulty in finding a new place, has kind of been turned round into a good way to save money. we've all been fucked over by our landlord, so i have no qualms, plyus he hasnt actually attempted to find anyone new, and has no idea that i am still there.

in general though i'd say that with squatting it isnt really about who is in the right, but about who has the most bottle, that is the person that will win out. but is not for much longer anyway, i'll be out in next 2 weeks or so

i think its 14 years and it has to be opposed I believe. Basically you have to be there for a hell of a long time with someone trying to get you out. Its a wierd twit of english common law. if you squat somewhere unopposed you will never get ownership rights. I could be wrong on this point.

It's 12 years in the UK to turn squatted property into your own. But whenever it happens Associated Newspapers always do the Feckless Hippy Gets House From Council For Nowt instead of Council Incompetents Cannot Keep Track Of Their Property, D'oh!

six years pass...

When Katharine Hibbert lost her job and her flat she didn't just downsize – she decided to dispense with money altogether, living on the stuff the rest of us throw away

Freelance journalist becomes squatter: interesting story - but is it right to appear under the 'ethical and green living' heading? Is this really as sustainable a way of life for more than a few at the 'margins of a wasteful society'?

"Lefties" - Property is Theft

It's a good watch: the Primal Scream therapy commune, Piers Corbyn, the Marxists, the trotskyists, and the Reichians, the proto-feminist group, the geodesic dome dweller and compost toilet user . Felt like it was ripe for some selective Adam Curtis cutting and pasting of extracts.

Dr Drudge (Bob Six), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 22:18 (nine years ago)

i think it played ok with a straight bat, ran some threads together but wasnt out to nail anyone. except playing the alien sound effects over the mad dutch guy obv.
