Shamefully basic technical question about downloading stuff

What does it mean when all I get is this little box containing a red square a green circle and a blue triangle, and what can I do about it? (Every time I try to download the soul seek software, I get this, but I have seen it in other contexts as well.)

Do answer this even if you hate me.

(I might go to bed soon, so if I don't respond to further response here, it's not because I'm ignoring anyone.)

usually that icon is used to indicate a file that is a picture (.gif, .jpg, etc). Is it an icon and if so what is the name of the file associated with it? When do you get the icon? Have you tried opening it? What happens?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 June 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing happens when I try to open it. I'm getting this at:

Soul Seek download

I have XP at home so I could have a try later maybe and see what you mean... cos I'm not sure what this box is, I dont know if Ive seen it before.

that link is good on my end, fwiw

ron (ron), Friday, 20 June 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I *think* it means an object that needs a plugin that you don't have installed; or a plugin that won't run for security reasons.

I don't use XP though, so I could be wrong. It might mean other things too.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 20 June 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it's just an exe file, though. i've had this problem at times with mp3's in opera, or i should say similar problems. instead of downloading the file, it would open a browser window and just sit there.

actually i would recommend having a look in your temporary internet files, just to see if it's sitting in there. not really a solution, but hey, maybe your computer is loading it but just isn't handling it properly

IE - tools - internet options - temporary internet files - settings - view files

ron (ron), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Rockist, I run XP on the laptop at home and have experienced no problems downloading and installing the .exe file.

I don't think the gods want me to get involved in file sharing. I've had problems every time I've tried these things out.

what does the "toggle away" switch in slsk do, aside from making a little "a" appear in the connection icon?

dan (dan), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It lets poeple know that you aren't currently at the machine. You can get the same effect by minimising the app.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, you can't toggle away by minimising. I though it did, but they've either got rid of it, or I invented it.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist, it sounds like it could possibly be your security settings?

Are you left-clicking on the link to slsk.exe?

If so, try instead to right-click on the link to bring up the menu, and choose "Save Target as..."
