Being off sick C/D

I'm sure this has been done before, but I can't find it.

Yesterday I fell down some stairs and tore the ligaments in my ankle. I am on crutches and can't put any weight on my left foot at all. I have been advised not to go anywhere for a few days, and I'm bored already.

I am the most impatient patient ever, and I feel guilty for being off work as I am capable of doing my work, just not of getting there to do it.

Plus side: Being pampered and getting to read ILX through the day. Confederations Cup on Eurosport. Possibility that I may be off next week and get to see more of Wimbledon than I usually do.
Minus side: Being off work for what seems like no good reason. Possibly not getting paid as I seem to have used up my allowable "three times off sick in a twelve month period" by having the flu and panic attacks.

Sore ankle stories, views on stupid work illness policies, and things to do when you are bored please!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

classic part: being able to post more on ILX in one day than i have in a month when i'm well.

dud part: the stuff that you go through when yer sick (sniffling, sneezing, vomiting, etc.)

Sore ankle stories - breaking my ankle playing football and not realising for 5 days afterwards....

We have a trigger thing after three sick leaves per 12 months - letter gets sent to the line manager to tell them to have a dicussion with the member of staff, and possible initiation of a stage one warning. I suppose it makes sense if you've got members of staff who are going to take the mickey, but it's very annoying.

I alwats think 'great' at the start, but I quickly get bored. I ended up gettign addicted to Quincy etc. read all the books I'd put off reading, re-read favourite books, slept a lot, and was still bored to tears. You have my sympathy. If the weather's nice can you sit outside? I always end up getting a headache cos I watch too much tv, and don't drink enough, so make sure you do, especially in the summer!

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope you are feeling better soon! I like sick days, providing you're not feeling too ill. I like to hang around the house watching trash tv, loads of films, reading & ilx. it does get boring though, so my sympathies are with you. Unless of course you can coerce someone to have a sick day too!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 20 June 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I am off sick today but I'm not really sick. I am definitely one of the taking the mickey people today I guess. My boss is so sound, he said "i don't care Ronan" and then screamed laughing "EVEN IF IT'S A HANGOVER!"

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 June 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh, i have a hangover today, productivity is at an all time low

H (Heruy), Friday, 20 June 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately Mr Ailsa is on holiday with his pals and is unaware of my predicament. As he was going away, my mother decided to fly over from Spain for the week to spend some time with me...I did this going to meet her off the train so her holiday is now ruined too. She's gone to visit her cousin for the morning, leaving me with books, computer, TV and industrial-strength, horse-tranquilliser-type painkillers. I have just phoned my boss to see if he can mail me some work to do so I won't have it all to go back to, but he can't.

Thank the Lord for the "recommend some on-line games" thread.

ailsa have a read of www.jonronson.com

I don't know if you're into his articles but I check it periodically when I'm bored cos he always seems to be doing something interesting or funny. Also I have a weird obsession and love for his book.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 June 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, as long as you have sick time and you're getting paid for it.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 June 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic - so long as it's paid time and you're not really sick. It's best to go into the office when sick - as long as you feel like crap you might as well be working - and everyone will avoid you 'cause they don't want to get sick, so you can spend the whole day ILX'ing and Amazon Wish Listing and stuff. (also, get sympathy from co-workers.)

Dud - when one really is sick and feeling pathetic and is stuck all alone in an empty house and is bored and knows that all of the sick days have been used to cover impromptu "let's stay in bed and fool around all day" decisions.

Most of my time off work in this job has been something to do with my depression, so that's always very dud indeed. When I'm not depressed and not in danger at work and getting paid and not feeling so terrible that I can't do things like read comfortably (no blinding headaches for example) it's not so bad because I get to catch up on reading and stuff.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 21 June 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

I'm off today. Feeling guilty even though I've good reason (chest = feels like lungs stuck to inside of ribcage and things. Painful enough). I think it's the way I was brought up. Short of being dead I'm always going to feel guilty taking time off. Stupid work making me feel bad for not feeling good! :(

The last time was a few weeks ago. Had the stomach flu - I think, I mentioned on ILX it was something bad we ate, but it was some wacky virus going round. All night vomit fest and during the day terrible headaches. Thank god my parents were here so they could bring our daughter to the day care.

nathalie, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 09:18 (nineteen years ago)

It's classic if you're not really sick, but dud if you are.

I'm going to have to have 10 days off work following my operation - and it SUCKS because I won't be able to do anything. Can't write, can't draw, can't type, can't use a computer, can't play guitar, can't even wank. Just enforced rest and recovery. My idea of hell.

I suppose I can learn to hold books open with my left hand and just read for 10 days straight. Maybe then I'll finally finish that tome on the Reformation...

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 09:32 (nineteen years ago)

Poor Kev-lol. Don't feel guilty. Unless someone's had to have a life-saving operation cancelled as a result of your illness, your work can wait. And even then, fuck 'em.

Oh yes.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 09:49 (nineteen years ago)

Kaet, I think the LDN ILX massive should set up a rotating team of helpers for the tasks you can't do. (don't know how many of them are wankers though, that one could be a problem)

StanM, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 09:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ed and Frances are taking it in turns to look after me for the first 24 hours when I will be a gibbering wreck.

But I think it might actually be *good* for me to take an enforced break from all those other things.

I'd like it if people came round and brought me soup. But for once, none of the ILX LDN crew are suitable wankers. ;-) I wonder if I can find some DDBs to volunteer...

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

Kate, ten days of doing essentially nothing sounds manky. Maybe it would give you time to catch up on your astral projection practice, though.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

Cheers accentmonkey. Currently trying to catch up on housework. The guilt manifesting itself unfortunately :(

kv_nol, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, if you really felt guilty about being off work, you would maximize your sofa time in order to get back to work as fast as possible. Cleaning house will only disturb more germs in your system and make you sicker, thus keeping you at home longer. You are only showing your loyalty to your colleagues by catching up on Cash in the Attic and Bear in the Big Blue House.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'm thinking of playing games now. I am v sad, I will admit. I should be working on PC etc but it can wait.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

I'm jumping between tabs and thought this was the unemployment thread for a moment, I was like 'you can get paid for that now?'

soref, Monday, 3 February 2014 13:30 (twelve years ago)

Being sick and unemployed was such a disappointment last week. Didn't even get the opportunity to moan about it to anyone.

mmmm, Monday, 3 February 2014 14:07 (twelve years ago)

I've been sick less while I've been unemployed.

And when you f--- up, you go backwards (snoball), Monday, 3 February 2014 14:57 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I didn't get sick until I went back to work! I'm not used to all those public germs anymore.
