ATTN Web People: How do I register a web address that doesn't currently exist?

I want to buy/somehow procure a www.****.com URL but since the **** bit is a word I've totally made up, I can't go through the usual route of typing it into my browser, finding out who owns it and buying it off them.

It doesn't exist as .com, .net, .co.uk, .org or anything else I try; in fact, it returns no results when just the **** is typed into google!

So - what do I do? Soon as possible, please!

New answers from UK-based ILE-ers if you don't mind - don't wanna be regionalist, but I'm based in London ;-)

Don't register masterbone.com! Or masterbone.co.uk for that matter.

Have a word with my mate Jonnie, he works for a net registration firm.

netnames I think they're called

if the name doesnt come up when you search for it, you can assume it is available and you can buy it...as a failsafe you would be prevented from purchasing it if it already existed and someone else owned it anyway.

i recommend 123reg.co.uk for domain registration

I second that recommendation.

This is what I'd already assumed, but if it isn't already regiatered, who do I buy it from?!

Do I go to, say, 123reg.co.uk and just say, "Hello, I'd like to register www.****.com, can you sort it out for me?", and they'll just do it, just like that? Or is it more complex?

Sorry to sound like a webnoramus (ahhh, sweet neologism), but I'm new to all this.
