Can't ... Breathe ..!

Goddamned HAYFEVER keeps killing me! My nose has bunged up so bad that I can't breathe properly, even out of my mouth. And my eyes! Oh god my eyes!

I've tried stuff like clarityn, other drugs whose names escape me, various antihistamines... What do I do???

N. Ron, Saturday, 21 June 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Let it escalate to asthma.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Saturday, 21 June 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Move to the seaside.
More realistically drink caffeine to open up airways and avoid dairy products like the plague.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 21 June 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If you take antihistamines, you should probably also take a decongestant and mucous thinner (since antihistamines can tend to make you dry out). You could see an allergist about getting allergy injections, if it's worth it to you. Another thing you can do on your own is nasal irrigation. I use an attachement (the "Grossan tip") added onto a waterpik to clean my nasal passages out with warm salt water. It definietly helps, though it is inconvenient. Still, on days when I am especially suffering from allergies or other sinus problems, sometimes I look forward to getting home and doing nasal irrigation, for the relief it brings.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 21 June 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I've found the greatest plus of nasal allergies is that it's easier to go to sleep at night when my brain is deprived of oxygen. The downside is worrying that I'll wake up dead.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 21 June 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Sommermute - too late: I've suffered from asthma since about 4 years old. Which automatically put me in "nerd/geek" status at school.

Rockist Scientist - this nasal irritation, I mean gation - strictly an American thing or could I find professional devices like that in Eng-er-lund? Or will I have to resort to snorting saltwater?

My right eye keeps vugging water continually, but simultaneously feels dry & wrinkly. Ahh the joys of summer...

N. Ron, Saturday, 21 June 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm an extremely serious asthmatic (it's nearly killed me several times and I now take the equivalent of 40 puffs of Beclomethasone daily), but it didn't put me in the nerd/geek class, or keep me out of the school football team, for instance.

My hay fever was cured by injections of Pollinex. As with 80% of cases, it was a permanent cure. It has been withdrawn since, due to the occasional unfortunate side effect (one of the worst ones): death.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 June 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

is that you kodanshi?

my friend t.taught me yoga breathing exercises (= breathe from yr diaphragm) which has def.cut out the danger of acute attacks, even though it's made little or no difference to the low-level breathing congestion

my dad was a serious asthmatic until he got married, when it cleared up more or less overnight (!!?? not v.helpful but interesting and odd)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Death's not so bad. 'specially compared to hay fever.

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

So Mark, you're recommending that N. Ron gets married as a possible cure for hay fever? Have you spoken to the BMA about this?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

well if it;s the case that eg some ppl are allergic to their partner's saliva, then maybe other ppl get the anti-gen* they need from their partner's saliva

or maybe my mum has cure-all saliva?

hmmm, do i want to carry on down this road of speculation? no i think i do not....

(*is this a word?)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

antigen, no hyphen. It's anything that stimulates the production of antibodies.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe my mum has cure-all saliva?

Talk about "Mommy, kiss it and make it better"!

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 22 June 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't joke about snorting saltwater - I saw this recommended by some TV doctor (Hillary Jones or whoever) once, and I thought it might be worth a try.

You need to fill a large bowl with warm water, dissolve a couple of tablespoons of salt into it and yes, stick your face in it and try to inhale the warm salty water through your nose. It's all a bit messy and anyone witnessing this strange spectacle tends to get hysterical from laughing so hard at you.....but I found it helped get rid of that blocked-up yucky feeling really rather well.

Touch wood, I haven't suffered too badly from hay fever this year. The only thing which relieves the symptoms altogether for me is a Piriton tablet, but they make me very sleepy so I don't tend to bother.

You should try the face-in-a-bowl-of-warm-salty-water, though. Really.

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Or better yet, get one of these things:

http://www.bausinger.de/Bilder/I3_60x.jpg

I don't know what they're called in English. You use them to insert salt water into one nostril and let it run out the other.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it a teapot?

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you all for your words of advice, recommendations and just general hilarity. And yes I used to post japanese scat porn here as Kodanshi. The design on that salt water pot looks Indian.

N. Ron, Sunday, 22 June 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, the neti pot routine is Indian. The nasal irrigation with waterpik is an updated hi-tech version. I find it easier to deal with. I bought mine online. It should be possible to get it outside of the U.S. that way, I think.

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 22 June 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to take 120mg of pseudoephedrine twice a day, just to keep from having my head explode.

The joys of no insurance.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand this salt water thing. How on earth does that even work?

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 22 June 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently coating the inside of your nose with Vaseline will help prevent bad symptoms. Also, wear glasses lots when outside. Antihistamines should be taken as a preventative measure rather than as a reactive one to have most effect.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 22 June 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

go see a homoeopath and they will figure out the right remedy which will stop yr hayfever in its tracks

hellbaby (hellbaby), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

my hay fever plays up something rotten too, but i find clarityn works well, so i'm no use to you...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.yogaskolen.org/images/sol-neti.jpg

Ally, the water goes in one nostril and comes out the other, moving excess mucous out along the way. It also stimulates the action of the nasal cilia.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 23 June 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

(Beyond golden showers. . .)

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 23 June 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

here is where I mention the Buteyko breathing exercises again to athsmatic ilxors...swear to god, my dad had asthsma for nearly 50 years and it's cleared up due to these exercises.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 23 June 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I must have started going senile in my old age but I think she looks really sexy doing that... Almost like Christina Applegate.

N. Ron, Monday, 23 June 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, homeopathy. *That*'ll work. [snort]

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 23 June 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

damn sexy, though i think she's more Reese Witherspoon than Applegate

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 23 June 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly what I was thinking, Chris.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 23 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)
