Quincy M.E. Classic or uber-classic that shits all over everything except maybe 24.

24 is not that good, otherwise yes quincy = genius

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

CSI is the new Quincy, obv

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Quincy punk episode = still funny as hell.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

csi = classic too. only grissom can really compete. quincy has more of a johnny carson edge to him though.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

csi = quincy has a hot date with the visible man:

(his tummy panel didn't fit so his large intestine always fell out and also his kidneys always fell down into his feet)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

haha! you were obviously not an 80s child, cos then you would know that transformers (the original shit here, not the neo-plastic recreations) were the best toys ever.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

his tummy panel didn't fit so his large intestine always fell out and also his kidneys always fell down into his feet)

Did he then get run over and the asian-looking driver get kicked to death by a bunch of liquered-up rednecks who thought he was doing a hit-and-run?

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

24 roxx you are all members of Second Wave, except Bob Shaw who could be C*lum's older brother in disguise

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love the feinting cops in the opening sequence.

Also - did anyone else notice that literally every other episode was about amphetamines?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'll stand by 24 till i die, brilliant show, second series is the best thing ever. incidentally has anyone else noticed this:
http://www.jsonline.com/graphics/owlive/img/oct02/sutherland102802.jpg
vs
http://epguides.com/Quincy/cast.jpg

could they by any chance be related, they sort of look like father and son.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Keifer Sutherland is related to Donald Sutherland, whereas Jack Klugman is related to... er....

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

24 is best when you see in random order

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

will they do a "no kim" edit of the second series, perhaps a DVD lack-of-extra "No Kim" feature?

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

i can't sit through an episode of 24 without falling asleep, which isn't to say i don't like it.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

kim's alright, i'll defend kim. shes a good looking girl, and that vest she wore was just too hot, especially since i was sitting on a (metaphorical) loaded gun at the time

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Leigh is right, 24 has a very soporific effect on me, I find myself nodding off regardless of what's happening. zzz. however I am always nice and awake by the time the rerun of This Life comes on.

Emma, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

kim worked ok in series 1, but it's just a joke in series 2 -- really lets it down. (so far) sorry for 24 hijacking this lovely quincy thread.

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 13:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, Quincy isn't a classic. This is taking irony way too far.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 14:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Steve Albini's girlfriend is like the biggest Quincy fan ever.

hstencil, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

theres no irony involved, its just a really good show. puts most modern tv to shame. its all there, drama, comedy, romance. irony would be if i was to say bergerac was a good show. or diagnosis murder. they in fact suck. quincy is great though.

is that true about steves girlfriend? if so, she aint met me, ive been watching the show religiously ever time they show it for like 4 years now.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hmmm... okay. I think it's 90% crap, to be honest. There's a lot of modern stuff that utterly dumps on it (not to mention a lot of contemporaneous stuff, like Hawaii Five-O and Columbo).

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 15:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

colombo and hawaii five-o are good shows. but i quincy is more addictive for me. what modern stuff dumps on it? as i said 24 is up there. i like scrubs too. but most tv chews balls these days.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

808 State have a track called 'Quincy's Lunch' - what do you suppose this was? i'd say a gelotto (sp?) and a couple of pickled eggs.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

i was gonna say quincy only eats pussy for lunch, which is probably a bit of an underestimation of the man, given he probably gets action all day long.

you know quincy's first name was mentioned in the show, although apparently his initial (R) is known. how flash is that, just going by one name.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

The totally irrelevant Kim bits are really important, as comedy relief from the desperately intense Jack parts. The bit in the nutter's bunker where she has had a chance to clean up a bit, and she spends like a minute admiring her tight white top in the mirror, was hilarious. In the same way that William Shatner was within a millimetre of twirling a non-existent moustache in that Star Trek ep where he is split into good and evil Kirks, you knew Kim was one moment from cupping her breasts and licking her lips.

I'm very much hoping that they don't make any attempt to tie Kim's nonsense into the main storyline at any point, but I fear they will try to pull them together.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Having not see either 24 or CSI, I must say that Quincy M.E. is an ultimate classic. Brilliant. Way beyond anything on the tube today.

Well, except for re-runs of Columbo and Inspector Morse and those other mystery shows that I sometimes watch.

true story: 12-year old Tad was scared offa punk for a few years because of the infamous Quincy punk-rock episode. that my mom was also watching at the time and was essentially serving as an amen corner for the show's sentiment didn't help, either.

another true story: rockford files and knight rider were better.

I never did get The Rockford Files, but I have recently become a serious Barney Milller fanatic, if that counts for anything.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 02:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

if only real-life punkers were as classic as the quincy punkers. i mean, the quincy punkers were gangstas before gangstas were gangstas! quincy punkers killed and brainwashed people and smashed up rock clubs and beat up motherfuckers! the only real punker kinda like that was GG Allin. real-life punkers were so much more lame.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 02:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

na, she got hips, she's the perfect shape. i can't wait till her acting career goes down the pan and she's reduced to doing late night soft porn for channel 5...

one month passes...
The naked lesbian plane-blowing-up terrorist from the very first episode. Perfect.

The bit where the ruthless, yet versatile, government agent gets trapped in a car by a jammed seatbelt was class. I swear I thought I was hearing things when Kiefer came out with that bit of dialogue. A jammed seatbelt? What is he, five years old? Could he not have slipped out of it? Unscrewed the 'clunk-click' bit? Cut throught the belt with a trust pocketknife? Burnt through it with a lighter? No, he got stuck in it like a whining baby.

Because I love the show, I will just presume that they'd meant for the car to be on the verge of blowing up, or something, that they’d run out of special effects budget, and that the writers had to come up with a replacement scene pretty sharpish.

But a jammed seatbelt?!?!??!? If only he’d held on to that hacksaw for the past 23 hours...

yeah but quincy gets laid more

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

jack is still great though, and in terms of killing efficiency is far superior to quincy. just bought the 24 season 1 and 2 limited edition dvd box, hooray!

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 11 August 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think I heard about the season 2 set, what goodies has it?

Leee (Leee), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

havent had time to watch them yet (im gonna rewatch series one first, i really feel like finding the time to do this all in one go), but lookin at the back of the box, here are the season 2 specials:
two part documentary - "24 exposed"
featurette "on the button - the destruction of ctu"
episode commentaries from cast and crews includin kiefer and joel surnow
45 deleted scenes that can be viewed independently, with or without commentaries, or branched into episodes

so it all sounds pretty cool

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sounds quite a bit more inneresting than the s1 set, which only has the alternate ending. I still haven't taken it out of the shrinkwrap. It is still a mint condition collectible!

Leee (Leee), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

im hoping all those 45 scenes involve michelle/kim lovin'

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you had said Kim/Carrie, I would have crowned you GENIUS OF THE DAY.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

ah now kim/carrie/michelle, that sounds perfect actually. do you not like michelle? carrie would probably be more openly dirty, but with michelle theres a certain purity, which probably masks a burning desire for raw nastiness.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Monday, 11 August 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, Michelle was blah for me. I would've liked to see Michelle piss standing up more than watch her "interrogate" Sayed Ali, which *really* killed the character for me.

But anyway, 24 slash. Good times.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 11 August 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Best bit of the last episode: when Jack was about to be killed but was saved by a guy in a helicopter which had snuck up on them without anyone hearing it!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 11 August 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

my fave bit was when jack performed that incredible acrobatic ddt on that henchman, you know where he grabbed him by the neck and ran UP the wall, and then dropped slamming the guys head into the ground
