Net Nanny - total DUD

So the Supremes say filtering software in public libraries is ok.

They installed "Net Nazi" in the business center of a friend's building. They are paying for the service and yet they cannot access political sites, gay, lesbian and transgender sites, as well as personals sites like Nerve.

She's not even getting some e-mail because it contains offending words.

I tried using one of the computers with Net Nazi on it, and I couldn't even read one sentence because it had many words blocked out with ########.

I'm wondering if this building is actually violating Chicago's Human Rights Ordinance and Fair Housing Ordinance by disallowing GLBT sites while right-wing homophobe sites are apparently OK.

We went into the lab when no one was there and changed all of the home pages on IE to gay.com, because when you do that, you get this image of the Net Nanny pointing her finger at you.

Unbelievable.

You should link Tubgirl onto the homepage of all of the browsers.

I think the court said specifically that the software was permissable because it could be turned off, so it's your right to have it turned off if you request. (Not that this is a fabulous state of affairs since one attracts attention with such a request, but there you go.)

Not to mention that you have to know that it's your right to have it turned off. There's still too much interference here, IMO.

Not to mention that it's probably not something a front-line librarian would be doing, at least not in large libraries. First, you have to locate someone from the IT staff who can bypass all of the security that is put on public computers. Then you have to perform all of the necessary jiggery-pokery, put all of the security back on the computer, and by this time the person who requested that the filter be disabled has already died from the breast cancer she was trying to research in the first place.

Le sigh.
