Drive Now, Talk Later. Ok, so its not legalized pot but its close.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Everywhere bans cellphones while driving now. My friend Billy went to the tombs because he was talking on cellphone while driving. We thought he got arrested for drug possession but he was put in jail for like an entire night for TALKING ON HIS CELLPHONE. I mean, honestly, what does that even imply?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Scooterman

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet! Screw a car, I wanna scooter in a bag!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly using cells while driving is not banned in Texas.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, honestly, what does that even imply?

That it's about time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(To be fair -- I've known folks who handle cell phones and driving with skill and safety, like Chris Barrus and Spencer Chow. But most everyone else looks like they should be beaten.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

KISS ASS.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

banning cellphones while driving in the DC/NoVA/MD area would be a good way to have the Federal Govt. hunt you down

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The penalty will apply any time drivers are caught holding a cellphone in their hands or wedged between their head and shoulder or any time passengers are seen holding a phone close to the driver's ear, the Department for Transport said.

The most expensive cell bill ever.

However, someone will find a way to chat on the phone, while holding the handset between their legs. (You'd say 'hands free device', but no...)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, totally justifed. Ally, your friend is a dick. He totally deserved it. Has he learnt his lesson yet?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about the story about Billy, is that he wasn't actually driving. He was parked, but the car was on. So now he turns off the car.

Good thing he didn't light up his spliff, otherwise he woulda been really in trouble.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, he would have ended up in jail for some other practical reason

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess right now's not the time to admit that I actually dialed numbers on the cell phone many, many times while I was driving, huh?

What? No one was picking up at home and I was getting worried!

Stop looking at me that way. :)

London, Can You Wait?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Recently I saw a bus driver talking on a phone while driving (and running a red light).

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

like cyclists, london bus drivers are under the illusion that traffic lights apply not to them. they are the grumpiest of the grumpy too.

David_X (David_X), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was once in a cab that proceeded to drive me to the airport at 60mph whilst the driver transferred all this phone numbers, one at a time, from one handset to another. It was like being on that rollercoaster on Brighton pier, but with a slightly reduced risk of death.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I have done it before I must admit. I'll have to get a hands free as that is not illegal.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it's a good thing to do, as of course, it's very dangerous. I was just confessing to have done it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

According to the science graphic in Metro this morning, the average stopping distance at 70mph is:

102ft
Normally
115ft
Over alcohol limit
128ft
On hands-free
148ft
On hand-held

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(oo, pretty, it worked)

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a woman this morning who was driving while talking on her phone and lighting a cigarette all at the same time.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, tis Patsy Stone!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(oo, pretty, it worked)

Such diction;> Alan, I'm slightly worried as you are supposed to be the model for the hard-working British chap;>

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan, what does it mean though? That a hands-free is still worse than being intoxicated? That's bizarre. What about if you just have another person in the car that you are speaking to?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It might mean that the driver is paying less attention to the road, when he should be paying less to his fellow passenger.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, "hands-free" and "hand-held" are talking about phones.

Well, it's a lot less interesting that way, and the "over the alcohol limit" doesn't look like the first part of a progression anymore.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

if you've got someone in the car you're talking to, they can see what's going on too, and generally, if you get in a tight spot, their reaction will be the same as yours and they'll shut up, or even yell, if they've seen something before you

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 26 June 2003 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

erm, hello.

chris (chris), Thursday, 26 June 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)
