"Maybe if white parents cheered and hollered a bit when their kids made good, their kids wouldn't go shooting up their playmates to get attention"

But Gloria raised a young man who is talented, intelligent and well-balanced.

Is he 'well balanced' enough to remember to turn the knob down on the bling, and go to college?

Only thing my momma gave me was a piece of her mind and a slap on the back of my head. I'd be like "mommy, how come that white kid has bike?" and she'd be "White people indulge their children with material things as a replacement for poor parenting, now SHUT UP and get in the car!"

But I love my momma, seriously...she tought her boy right...and wrong...that little boy grew up to be George W. Bush!

Thank you, goodight!

The black woman who sits next to me at work went on and on the other day about how her kids may have to go without a lot of things, but they will always have the best tennis shoes money can buy. I am hesitant to judge her priorities, but maybe I shouldn't be.

Was that Mrs Williams - the mother of Serena and Venus?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't judge too much, Kenan. That same sort of sentiment gets applauded in plenty of other contexts -- say, "We didn't have much growing up, but mother always made sure I had a new dress for Easter" -- and not without reason: it's essentially the sound of poor people saying they're going to keep their heads up and work to make sure they can provide their families with at least one arbitrary luxury or status symbol. Sometimes that's a bad idea, but sometimes there's an attractive dignity and determination in setting your sights on that one thing: I'd venture that in plenty of cases its the satisfaction of keeping up That One Thing that keeps people together. Now, assigning tennis shoes the status of That One Thing may seem tacky or cheap or consumerist to plenty of people, but for a lot of neighborhoods and people and mini-cultures tennis shoes really are a significant status symbol. And they're almost certainly something her kids place a lot of value on: what she's saying could well be that no matter how bad things get, she's always kept it together enough that when her kids wanted some new sneakers, she never had to tell them they were too poor to manage it. That's got to be a good feeling for a mother; so long as she's not making ridiculous financial decisions to do that, I'd say let her and her kids take pride in That One Thing.

Nabisco, this is like the third time this year that you've stated something so eloquently and to my ears correctly that it just floors me. Just wanted to say. Even though I am one of those "brand name tennis shoes? Jesus, how awful" kinda people. Nice work there, N.
