Another tedious meta discussion about the upcoming NYC FAP fun: THE FOOD THREAD

I am organizing an NYC Food Tour, mostly for the benefit of Ned and Mr. Barrus. I've already got a bunch of places picked out, so I'm not really asking for suggestions here, just presenting an invitation (exact dates and times uncertain, but I'm hoping we can nail this down). Sunday is when we do Les Halles -- this part is Chris' project, so I'm leaving the reservation-making and organization up to him. Otherwise:

V&T Pizzeria - 1024 Amsterdam Ave
An absolutely amazing no-slices pizza place/Southern Italian red-sauce joint up by Columbia. This is where I bring out-of-towners who want "real New York pizza." Their chicken parmigiana is out of this world too.

Hungarian Pastry Shop - 1030 Amsterdam Ave
It's practically next door to V&T; good place for dessert and coffee; cute cat roaming around and a nice low-key university-hangout feel.

Madras Mahal - 104 Lexington Avenue
Excellent, cheap South Indian vegetarian restaurant specializing in dosas (crispy crepes filled with spiced potatoes).

Gandhi - 345 E. 6th Street
One of the higher-end (but still affordable) dodgy-cheapo Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani curry places on 6th St. I love their tandoori platters, which come fully loaded with rice, dal, nan, appetizers, the works.

Veselka - 144 2nd Ave
Old-world Ukrainian/Eastern European dishes and pretty good diner-style food. They stay open late and they're cheap.

The Chinatown Ice Cream Factory - 65 Bayard St
I recommend the ginger ice cream.

JB, I'm already preparing my purse for the bottles of antacid I'll prolly be chugging.

Thank god for no diets;>

Bring it on!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, I liked Veselka so much I bought a "Love Slav" t-shirt. It's great!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

blintzes at veselka, i miss

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, I liked Veselka so much I bought a "Love Slav" t-shirt. It's great!

Now see, Sean, I'd insist you wear it at the FAP, but you no show.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe the bear can wear it.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

For Greek food (and some of the freshest seafood I've had in NYC):

Taverna Kyclades - 3307 Ditmars Blvd.

It's a tiny place and going there requires a trip to Astoria (not as difficult as it sounds), but it's probably my favorite Greek restaurant in town. I've had good luck with the swordfish and grilled calamari. I think they have salads too, and some very good Greek-style vegetables (served with stewed tomatoes), but I don't remember it being THAT accommodating to vegetarians, I'm afraid. Prices are a little splurgy ($13-$20 per entree), but worth it for the quality.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think our food tour should have at least ONE trip to the outer boroughs.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

That place is awesome, the Greek place, you guys should go. There's also a couple decent South Americans that are really cheap in Astoria.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Course, JB. Else you really couldn't call it an NYC food trip...

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The weekend is going to be amazingly action-packed already, so I 'd like to concentrate places that simply don't exist on the west coast. L.A. does have a couple of good Indian places, but amazing Greek and eastern European food is pretty scarce. I'd be totally happy if we made it to Taverna Kyclades, Veselka, and the pizza place/Hungarian pastry combo. Heck, even if we just made it to one...

Since it's a holiday weekend, any ideas as to how it's going to affect who/what's going to be open?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I 'd like to concentrate places that simply don't exist on the west coast.

Actually, yeah, I have to agree on this point. A focus on that would be wondrous, and I and my taste buds would thank all responsible parties forever. :-)

Since I leave very early on the morning of the sixth, might I vote for the pizza/Hungarian and Veselka locales for the fifth, one lunch, one dinner, say? Even that would be joy enough. :-) But I am perfectly content to let things happen as they do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Suburban Maryland has none of the above. I demand all of it. What is this 'action-packed' stuff?

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hungarian Pastry Shop - 1030 Amsterdam Ave
It's practically next door to V&T; good place for dessert and coffee; cute cat roaming around and a nice low-key...

This brought back memories of 11 (12?) years ago when said cat (or its predecessor, more likely) let loose a whole bladder's worth of urine onto the backpack of my then-boyfriend.

(You have been warned.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not urine, it's "local color."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

No charge for extra 'local color'!

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Since I leave very early on the morning of the sixth, might I vote for the pizza/Hungarian and Veselka locales for the fifth, one lunch, one dinner, say?

Sounds nice. When should we do Kyclades?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What is this 'action-packed' stuff?

See all the other threads about drinking, bacon, and fireworks viewing.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

When should we do Kyclades?

Any chance of them being open during the day on the 4th?

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I can call and find out. But they probably will be open.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool deal... I'm there.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see why they wouldn't be--I've noticed absolutely no instances of entertainment venues like restaurants, bars, theatres, etc closing down because of non-holidays like the 4th.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just wondering. Couple places out here close on the slightest whiff of a holiday, but they're boring and suburban

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just gonna ask that...because like even when I lived in Arizona, nothing ever closed, even on stalewarts like Christmas. I wouldn't worry about it at all, plan on it being open.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, what an awesome thing for you to do, JBR! Count me in for some/all of it. Hoo boy do I love food.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 26 June 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes indeed, thanks for JBR and everyone who has made suggestions! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

And if we have room for dessert after our Greek lunch, I know a place nearby that serves some of the best baklava I've ever tasted.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Delicious!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

no nuts in my desserts! I will buy you a pastryish thing, jbr for taking us on tour with you.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmmm....baklava < / HOMER>

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Carey, it was just a comfortable place to rest them for a moment, but I'll get out of your way now.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

????????????????

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I fully understand and feel for paul

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got that joke. I need to start watching more porn.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm..."Another tedious meta discussion about the upcoming NYC FAP fun: THE PORN THREAD"?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 26 June 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah what porn/live sex theaters are ya dragging the poor innocents to? (and are there any left in NYC?)

H (Heruy), Thursday, 26 June 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

At all costs, avoid the Baby Doll Lounge on White Street (a block or so North of the Knitting Factory). Went there as a goof on Monday night in a drunken stupor with my friend John after seeing Jonathan Richman at the Knitting Factory, and its unimaginable, unspeakable horrors are forever burned on my retina like the mark of the Phantom's Ring.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer once described that place as the "end of the goddamned road."

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see why they wouldn't be--I've noticed absolutely no instances of entertainment venues like restaurants, bars, theatres, etc closing down because of non-holidays like the 4th.

Businesses like their cash too much, to close down on a major holiday. Besides, who wants to miss the possiblity of seeing pissed girls in tight skirts staggering down the road?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 26 June 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

revive. we need to decide on a meeting time for tomorrow. Let's say V&T (1024 Amsterdam Ave, at 110th St*) at 1:30pm. we'll do pizza and greek tomorrow. and whatever happens tonight i'm sure there'll be food involved too.

*Geeta says it might be 111th or 109th, but it's within those few blocks definitely. take the 1 or 9 train uptown to 110th.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 July 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

for tomorrow night, if you plan to meet us there: taverna kyclades, 3307 ditmars blvd. last stop on the queensbound n train. turn right on to ditmars from 31st st and walk two or three blocks. shall we say 7pm?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 July 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

V&T is mid-block b/w 110 and 111.

(The nw corner of 110 is 1020, a bar and my second home during the spring of '98.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 4 July 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

1020!!! haha that bar was my second home during the spring of '03

see you dudes tomorrow at v&t

mmm pizza

geeta (geeta), Friday, 4 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

man I wanna be at this FAP so bad :(

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 4 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm starting to get serious FAP envy, but the truth is I would have been too worn out and tired to enjoy it -- even thinking about traveling right now makes me feel like falling asleep. But have fun foax!

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 July 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to be there, too - this FAP sounds absolutely delicious.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Saturday, 5 July 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it was.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 6 July 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks. Are you sending doggy bags to those of us who are pining away without all of your company?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Sunday, 6 July 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

So what did you eat? I'm sorry I couldn't make it, especially as I hear the tour included a surprise Coney Island visit. Pictures?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 7 July 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(And how was Les Halles?)
