This is the thread where we compare/contrast/criticize/praise any variety of vegetarian/vegan mock meat soy garden patty tempeh seitan whatever products.. and local makers.

I just chanced myself on those Tofurkey brand veggie sausage griller products, and I'm gonna give them a shot tonight. Anyone try them yet? good stuff?

(if possible, note if they are vegan or not. Not a rule, just a friendly suggestion. :] for example: Morningstar stuff.. VERY good, but mostly not vegan)

(also, NO ANTI-MEAT, ANTI-VEGAN THROWDOWNS)

Surely this should be 'ultimasoydown'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 June 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

GardenVegan brand "burgers" = best
Fire Roasted Veggie Burgers (Gardenburger brand, also vegan) = 2nd best

SmartDogs = best "hot dog" brand

Neudonym, Friday, 27 June 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite veggie burgers = Dr. Praeger's. I get 'em at Trader Joe's. But they are definitely not mock meat -- what's good about them is that they're all-veggie and all-natural but still mega-flavorful. (Also vegan.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 27 June 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Boca brats.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 27 June 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'll start the first diss.

Bocaburgers suck ass.

They taste like stale generic oregano patties with a shitty chewy texture. My tongue has been stabbed by one of the "herbs" inside the burger before.

I've been surviving off Hillside Quickies sandwiches.. they're a vegan Jamaican/soul food kitchen based in Tacoma, who exports sandwiches to a lot of Northwest co-ops. They also have a restaurant in the U-district of Seattle where they'll prepare hot foods. The best stuff on earth.

Are jokes about Lord British allowed?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 27 June 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never had a problem with Boca Burgers! The "flame grilled" one is really good actually, in a "Burger King" way of being really good. But I also use more condiments than anyone ever so it could just be all that barbeque sauce.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 27 June 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, only if he starts his own Ren faire themed soy product company.

Behold, Lord Gluten. HUZZAH!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 27 June 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Bocaburgers are okay, as long as you put on a condiment. (say that out loud for my hiiiilarious oral-tradition pun to work!)

Neudonym, Friday, 27 June 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Gardenburgers were great when they first came out because they were like $1.99 a package, now they are like $3.50 at least. Neudonym those fire roasted veggie garden burgers are not vegan unless they changed recently. I have looked at every single one of those and they all have at least casein, whey, egg whites, or cheese. I think only one is vegan and it says vegan on the box.

I like the Morningstar sausage patties (also not vegan), and the crumbles which are vegan and are great in veggie chili. But otherwise I associate Morningstar with college living , since it was cheaper than most and kind of for people just getting into being veggie and they haven't refined their tastes yet.

Not dogs, fake balogna all suck IMO.

Best chinese food restaurant with mock meat is Ming Dynasty in Charlottesville, Va. Sooo good and cheap for their buffet where they have at least 3 mock meat entrees.

I never have been able to get into seitan although there was a month that i ate a lot of packages of it raw, but I think that was my roommates influence. The chicken flavored seitan is great, though.

Bocaburgers make me sick.

My pick: is the Veggielicious Veggie Burgers in Santa Fe flavor. These are vegan but don't have the problem of vegan patties where they fall part easily because they don't have egg whites and cheese. They are great tasting and we find them on sale for $1.50 a box so we stock up.

And I'm not even vegetarian.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 27 June 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, here we go.

1. money's gardenburger

largely mushrooms, cheese, rice, and soy. i don't like these because they taste like mushrooms, cheese, and rice. kind of the scalloped potato of the veggie burger world, and also most likely to make an appearance on the menu as the token "veggie" item at a pub or meaty restaurant.

2. garden patch veggie patties

taste disturbingly like the chicken ones, but look kind of pasty and odd. and there's chunks of carrot and something green in there.

3. garden patch chicken burger patties

almost exactly like a chicken burger but drier.

4. boca burgers (various)

dry, flavourless, may cause rectal bleeding.

5. yves veggie burger

these are nice ... they've even got cute little grill marks on them. pretty tasty, really and they look kind of like meat.

6. yves chick'n burgers

uh ... kind of like a pallid version of the above.

7. yves garden patties

like an orangey version of the above with miscellaneous pieces of carrots and something green in it.

8. president's choice lentil burgers (the ones with a hint of curry)

these are great but don't even bother to approximate meat -- which i think makes them more successful.

9. save-on-foods brand veggie burgers

they used to make ones that were very similar to the president's choice (sort of curried, not meaty) but now they've really fallen off the horse.

10. fake ham

in general i find is really bad. i actually gagged and ran to the bathroom one time when trying to cut fake ham.

11. veggie cutlet

is an amusing delicacy available at the local chinese supermarket. looks like porkchicken and tastes like newspapers flavoured with a hint of maple syrup.

(i realize i'm not being very descriptive with my product names here)

12. mo'drumsticks

DISGUSTING! they even put a little plastic thing in it to simulate a bone. gag!

starting to lose sight of what i'm doing here.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 27 June 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Best thing to do is when making spaghetti, chop tempeh into little blocks and sautee it in balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, garlic and onions and then add it into the spaghetti. So good.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 27 June 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a vegetarian, but why do i eat half this stuff?

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Friday, 27 June 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Carey, maybe they're called the Flame Roasted burgers or something. I always look for the little "VEGAN" icon, every time, because otherwise I'd pick up the wrong one.

Plus I'm backsliding majorly on my veganism these days. Pizza....

Neudonym, Friday, 27 June 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, the Flame roasted burgers are the ones that are vegan. You are correct.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 27 June 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Any time a Boca burger is invoked around Ally I think of Her Legendary Mom's AIM complaint regarding how a Boca Burger patty kept her from talking with her dear daughter.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 June 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I will eat gardenburgers, but won't allow them in my own home. There's something about the fact that you can cook them in a toaster that I just don't cotton to.

I feel you on the Hillside Quickies love, DB. That stuff is majestic. I am a big fan of tofu & tempeh sandwiches, but a little leery of seitan, mainly because my friends warned me away from it. Also, a great way to prepare tempeh: marinate tempeh cubes in a mixture of lemon juice, soy sauce, and a hearty amount of grated ginger. Saute with onions and green peppers.

JS Williams (js williams), Friday, 27 June 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha Ned, strangely I was thinking the same thing.

"FUCK YOU BOCA BURGER! You think you're so special!"

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 27 June 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

My ex, who was a vegetarian, tried quorn once and was violently ill.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 June 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not much into the whole mock-meat style of vegetarianism, except for vege sausages and my own fantastic lentil burgers.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 27 June 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been veggie since age 12 and always disdained mock meat...until I went to NYC and tasted the glory of Tiny's Giant Big Mack Daddy (veggie equivalent of a big mac). I'm all over it now. Most breakfast sausages are pretty good. Yves Smart Bacon and veggie pepperoni are yummy too, and good for snacks or layering on sandwiches or homemade pizza. I've never had good luck with anything attempting to be a hamburger. I eat a lot of chick'n patties/nuggets smothered in barbeque sauce. Faux hot dogs are generally too bland and mushy, but the morningstar corn dogs are good.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 28 June 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Tiny's Giant Big Mack Daddy is my new alias. Enjoy.

Tiny's Giant Big Mack Daddy (donut), Saturday, 28 June 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never understood mock meat either. I think one of the best things of being a vegan is realizing that most kinds of meat taste kinda boring and alike, while veggies offer a limitless spectrum of tastes and textures. I've nothing against tofu or falafel, however, since they don't exactly taste like meat, and were never intended to serve as mock meat.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 30 June 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really like Gardenburgers, I think it's the texture that bugs me, how it's all soft and then there will be some random vegetable in there. It kind of freaks me out. I like Morningstar Grillers veggie burgers. We (me and Sarah) also consume vast quantities of the Morningstar Chik Nuggets, which are delicious. Every once in a while I get a craving for hot dogs and I have to get the veggie hot dogs, but those aren't really as good. But fake corn dogs...mmm.

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 30 June 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I love all fake beef jerky, even the gross kinds. But the newest line of Tofurkey Jerky is fucking awesome - the Ginger-Teriyaki one ownz all these wack-ass Morningstar Farms bustaz. In re: the rest, Boca sausages of all kinds are great and stand up nicely to the barbeque - the Brats & Smoked Sausages I mean. The burgers I like fine but I'm not prepared to throw down about 'em.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really get soy/fake burgers -- surely portabella burgers are yummier anyway?

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a Chinese restaurant here in Richmond that has a vegetarian buffet every weekend. Mmmmm.... Mock meats & veggies gallore!

Whenever we have company picnics, they remember to get me some Boca burgers even though I'm the only vegetarian in this huge company.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 30 June 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

surely portabella burgers are yummier anyway?

Mmmm...great when you can find them, yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 June 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

In *some* restaurants I would think it would be a problem (tho' I have seen them offered at a few), but not if you are making them yourself. The alternative is beyond blech.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I disagree on the portabella mushroom sandwich thing, in all my experience. They're all just too juicy and oily. They're best julienned as an add-on to some veggie fajitas or stir fry or similar, but never as the main attraction of a plate.

Most disturbingly, all the resulting fluids are this deep dark shade of black. I'm surprised portabella cuisine hasn't gotten a mass goth following.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe that's why I like them?

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Lately, as far as Morningstar stylee thingys go, I've been digging on the black bean burgers; great texture & not even trying on that whole meat-wannabe trip, top it with some pico de gallo and...*trails off drooling all over shirt*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I've been trying to describe in words why I absolutely love fake meat, but I can't stand the essence of real meat.

I think because, with the rare exception, any attempt to simulate, via soy, gluten, or what have you, any real meat essence ends up in utter failure, when you get down to technical terms. But I'm often amazed at the results of this utter failure for reasons other than its proximity to true meat taste.

Fake meat is the highest art of savory cakes. It's a highly organized preparation of a mash-up of ingredients. There's so much room for variety. It actually moves me, to some degree.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think also that, since I was raised on so much fast food and artificial foods as a kid, perhaps fake meat is just the ultimate way to fully satisfy my craving for "artificial" foods, yet remain on a healthy diet?

I'm curious. For those of you who are down on the fake meat tip, what was your breakdown of "real" vs. "artificial" food intake as a kid?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

THis is where I moan once again about how the first time I went to visit my now ex's family, his mom made his favorite dish, portabella mushroom sandwiches. I hate mushrooms. B-but a whole sandwhich full of 'em! Yikes! And yes, I ate it and smiled and was like, "mmm...mmm.. You sure are a good cook..."

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

db that was so eloquent! Once I grew out of my meat-eating "fuck that, I ain't eatin' that non-meat-textured shit" attitude and started giving the stuff a try, I was really intrigued by the textures - how different they were from anything, really - it was like learning to drink wine.

Midwest Harvest tofu by the way reigns over all other tofus with a cruel and merciless fist. And yes that includes White Wave, so bow down to Iowa, all y'all, lest we ride on you TONITE

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 30 June 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it is so all about gardenburger's riblets. slap them on a roll and you have a tasty tasty sandwich, sauce already included!

maura (maura), Monday, 30 June 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, hell yes...had some of those out in Washington while we were holed up instudio, they were so damned good.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread needs more deep fried moro bars.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

On the Tofu jerky tip...

None comes close to Stonewall's Jerquee, Teriyaki "Beef" Style

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

DB, I'm tellin' you, man, I used to order Stonewall's by the case, but this Tofurkey Ginger-Teriyaki is the BOMB

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Veg City Diner on 14th and 6th in NYC has a GREAT Portobello + Jack Cheese burger.
