Sunburns

Now I don't usually get sunburned, as I'm far from pale and my skin is more likely to get tanned. But hanging out in the sun all day last week on St-Jean day wearing just a singlet over my torso led to a somewhat unpleasant burn on the back of my neck and shoulders. Tell me, what am I supposed to do about this? Any good remedies, pale people? My neck hurts. It sucks.

hello, Noxzema

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

aloe works, solarcaine sometimes, my mom is an advocate of vinegar baths (which leaves you smelling like a salad and reminds me a little too much of those Summer's Eve 'Mom, do you douche?' commercials), noxema feels pretty good... whatever you do, just keep moisturizing.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

VINEGAR BATHS?!

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, cool water + vinegar = supposed to take the sting out.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

That's scary. It sounds like a Victorian remedy for bad humours (followed by a good bleeding, of course).

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh this reminds me!! i have to stock up, as i am way fair-skinned

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, lots of moisturiser, applied frequently.

I burn easier than anyone else here, odds are - I can burn through clothes, and am cautious even on a moderate English summer day. When I went out to play football back in May I took a hat and the factor 30 and stayed in the shade as much as possible, and London in May isn't so sunny really.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

All right, I'm gonna moisturize till I grow gills.

The other sad thing is I was wearing suntan lotion, but I couldn't find the kind that smells like coconut (which always delights me). Anyone know the brand of that stuff?

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hawaiian Tropics makes one like that

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds very odd, but trust me - it really works.

Get a very ripe tomato, cut it in half, and rub the cut side all over your sunburn. I'm not sure what the medicinal properties of tomatoes are (possibly lycopene or something) but it does work.

C J (C J), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ripe tomatoes, vinegar baths--I might as well make a pasta sauce while I'm at it.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

So your sunburn won't hurt and you'll have dinner - perfect.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Though unfortunately I don't have a cooking pot big enough to fit myself in.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Always an excuse...

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Trust me, if I did, I'd just turn the heat on medium-low and bathe on my stovetop every day. With one of those back-scrubber brushes.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 29 June 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

With one of those back-scrubber brushes.

you mean morrissey finally got a job?

I actively refuse to put on sunscreen despite having a skin tone resembling that of the famed film icon Powder. I have more lotion in my house than anyone, ever--coincidence? Lotion lotion lotion otherwise it will peel which hurts worse...take some tylenol or aspirin, that makes it not hurt as much.

(Other health issues I similarly refuse to acknowledge: hypoglycemia, lactose intolerance, and an allergy to beef)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 30 June 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

aloe vera gel is yer friend

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 30 June 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Desitin if you're really hurting, but it smells a bit like fish oil.

Me too! Being dizzy and nauseous is fun!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 30 June 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

like a hangover without the boozing beforehand!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 30 June 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually got a sunburn recently too, and now the back of my neck feels like jerky. Very gross. Looks like I'll be using lotion, too, for the foreseeable future, and SPF45 any time I plan to go out for any length of time.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 30 June 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I figure that eventually my body will give up and just accept that I really don't care about its needs and whims.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 30 June 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Any kind of really thick lotion should work, really. I got sunburned the day before my flight home on my vacation, and my shoulders were KILLING me with the straps from my luggage rubbing against the sunburn all the way through the airport. If you refuse to check stuff, and forget to put sunscreen on your shoulders, at least use wheeled luggage. ;-)

Are you sure you want to go that far?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 June 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(what a bloody horrible film that was)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 30 June 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

whats hypoclycimia?

Erik, Monday, 30 June 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Put some aftersun in the fridge & then when it's cold smother it on! It feels better for a while aslong as you dont rub in the lotion too much. Also calomine lotion is s'posed to be good, but not sure about this one myself! best of luck, sunburn sux!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 30 June 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i wasn't very concerned about this subject, but a few months ago i had to be operated of a skin cancer (and i'm not especially pale), so now i try to be moderate and take care of myself. not getting to the level of mr skidmore yet, anyway :-)

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 30 June 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hypoglycaemia = when your body produces too much insulin (usually as a reaction to you eating too much sugar, starch etc.) and thereby lowers your blood sugar levels too far. Symptoms include dizziness, hot flushes, nervous tics, weakness, nausea - I seem to get it quite a lot if I'm not careful with what I eat and drink.

(is that about right? I'm no medical man)

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 30 June 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

En France everyone has this stuff called Biafine - it's "emulsion pour application cutanée" and it's working wonders on mes jambes, which are grillées to a lobster hue.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

and always ALWAYS get someone else to do your back....

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Joan, I should emphasise that my caution is not paranoia - I've been hospitalised from sunstroke. I really am insanely vulnerable to this.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark C is correctamundo. I have been told it can develop into diabetes if not careful. All I have to say to that is that if diabetes is coming, it better come strapped cos I don't wanna live anymore. FUCK YOU DIABETES!!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 30 June 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
what's uglier, sunburn or patches of dead skin peeling off your arms?

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
I got badly burned on my knees yesterday at the Reds-Braves game. After the game I spent about two hours putting ice-water compresses on them and they didn't seem so incredibly bad. I didn't sleep well, but I did get some sleep. Today, they just seem worse. I've done the aloe vera gel and I have them wrapped in ice packs right now, but I am in a world of hurt.

Tip: when your knees are sunburned, don't do deep knee bends the next day. I think I felt all my capillaries blowing up.
