The sheer randomness of this story frightens me more than the idea of a targeted terrorist attack.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Cripes, this is in the city where I work! There's an Albertson's just down from UCI but I rather hope it wasn't that one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Ned, I was thinking about UCI when I read the story.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, the sad thing is, that if that subject heading was attached to something else, I'd be like, "CLASSIC!" Now I feel really kind of ashamed.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

jesus this is scary. if someone came at me with a sword they would have to actually chop me with it before my brain would register that something bad was going to happen.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the sort of news story I usually snicker at, but this time I'm somewhat horrified. I think it's the fact that the guy was schizophrenic and out on his own.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Turns out it was the one over at the Northwoods Shopping Center, at the other end of the city (Irvine stretches for quite a long distance). Doesn't make the story any less horrible, natch.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt get the part of the article where his coworker was all " he was a normal guy...well, he did have entire conversations all by himself, but he was a normal guy"

kephm, Monday, 30 June 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt get the part of the article where his coworker was all " he was a normal guy...well, he did have entire conversations all by himself, but he was a normal guy"

Either 1) California is a very, very strange place, or 2) the coworker was trying to say "I wouldn't have guessed that he would lash out the way he did."

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

he didn't say he was normal, he said he was odd!

Millar (Millar), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

J. Lu is accurate on both counts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I dread to think what a Dr Strangelove fan would have done.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

there used to be a notorious swordsman roaming seattle streets, but i never saw him myself. to my knowledge he never hurt anyone - just walked around with a sword strapped to his back (?)

ron (ron), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

of course he was wearing a trenchcoat

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a friend here in Lexington who walked around town with a monstrous two-handed Claymore (that's a sword y'all) strapped to his back. He didn't wear a trenchcoat, he wore a bathrobe.

And why yes he was schitzophrenic. Quite. But he didn't ever cut nobody's head off.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

There can be only one.

Right?

Let's hope so.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

++Either 1) California is a very, very strange place, or 2) the coworker was trying to say "I wouldn't have guessed that he would lash out the way he did."

well, i read the article much earlier in the day. does news like this really shock??

kephm, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It's more of a "normally I would laugh but this time I'm disturbed and I don't know why" thing, kephm.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't there a case like this in london a few years back, except in a church. ah yes, here's a link. two things strike me about all this. the first is how many more people could have been killed/injured if the people doing stuff like this had been able to get their hands on guns. the second it how funny the bbc's site used to look.

angela (angela), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Third is where can I get a sword?!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(i've just realised i was looking at the low bandwidth version of the bbc's site. d'oh.)

angela (angela), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mont St Michel in France was very good for sword buying when we were there.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Third is where can I get a sword?!

Just go to any Renaissance festival. Huzzah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

For fuck's sake stop encouraging him!

Nick's Mum (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

HUZZAH I say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Please say that's not a relative of yours, Ned?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me some credit. I wouldn't have this guy in the house.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

How about a seedy alley?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if you provide the butter.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Tottenham Court Road and a viking to thread.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

If people could get their hands on guns in the UK, somebody probably would've shot that samurai guy.

Stuart (Stuart), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't there a case like this in london a few years back, except in a church.

Idiots! You don't duel on holy ground. No wonder it turned out badly.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, my coworkers and I have just been crusing through the SCA webpages. DEAR LORD in HEAVEN. I give you Sir Helgi Hrafnfaedir. HUZZAH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

All hail Captain Smackable!

(Why is "HUZZAH!" one of the funniest words in the English language?)
