And what are you working on in your spare time (besides the lottery)?

Scaredy Cat (Natola), Monday, 30 June 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i am a musician, which i obviously don't do for a living, but i have two part-time jobs: one as a receptionist and the other as a research assistant. i'm also a full-time student, but it gets relegated to spare-time status cos i'm not very good at prioritising :-)

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 30 June 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

eeking out a living making websites (so 2001 i know), and in my spare time, i um, make websites. i'm freelancing whilst looking for a proper job...making websites.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i work part-time in a newsagents (still only half-way through college).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I test web applications for a living. in my spare time i write music and think about writing music. oh and make CDRs.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem, do you design as well as code (PHP, ASP, SQL, XML)? I've actually slid from print design into web design since the market crash. It's really strange, but it's like there's a big need for web designers and not print. Fortunately, I still get to do print, but I was basically hired recently as the "new web guy". I don't even really know any of the above programming languages (barely PHP and SQL, that's it).

Web is interesting to me just because it's a new challenge, really. I am sort of bored of design and spending more time on creating books.

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i can barely write and edit HTML scaredy! so yeh do more on the graphical/design side, have done some print stuff in the last two years now and then. print actually seems healthier than web at times (is that what you meant to say?)...but could do with learning more of the languages you mentioned (have started to) - coding is quite boring to me, tho its nice when you do something and it works.

if i could think of a job that i'd enjoy that didnt require such an unhealthy amount of time at a computer screen then i'd probably do it.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

print actually seems healthier than web at times (is that what you meant to say?)..

No, actually, that's what's weird in my experience. Trying to find a print job for over a year, I finally started looking for web work and suddenly had a lot more luck! And, at the time, I had 6 years PRINT ONLY experience and, like, 2 years totally nonpro web experience.

if i could think of a job that i'd enjoy that didnt require such an unhealthy amount of time at a computer screen then i'd probably do it.

Me too.

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

... all the temp agencies would ask, "Do you do web design?" and then sound extremely let-down when I told them, "not really." Finally, I just started taking web design jobs (though I was scared) and got work left and right. Then, I got a full-time gig as the "new web guy," as I said earlier.

If you're in NYC, I had luck with Creek & River, 24-7, Vanguard Temps and Advantage Human Resourcing.

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I work in two libraries as a part-time library dude (I may be looking for a new job, might not). I'm also trying to write more without actually trying. yet.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I'm in a band! Carey's heard us, so ask her what we sound like.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I edit/copyedit/proofread/etcetera documents as my assignments require. I used to produce Web content a couple years ago...the place was an electronic sweatshop, but I miss it.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're in NYC, I had luck with Creek & River, 24-7, Vanguard Temps and Advantage Human Resourcing

no i'm in stupid London with its terrible agencies and general dearth of the kind of positions i'm interested in. the real problem is supply exceeds demand here. NYC and LA (where i think Spencer is doing well in a similar role) being bigger and wealthier i guess there are more opportunities there.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm an analyst in the banking and investment unit of a multinational IT company. I think I've mentioned that before. Since we are throwing around acronyms, I play with CORBA, xml, C++, Solaris 9, Oracle 8i, Java and the occasional IIOP & HTTP connection. Childsplay technically, the hard part for a computer geek like me is the business aspects of portfolio management, dealing with OSC & governnment regulations and currently figuring out if we are compliant with federal tax changes for 2002.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I do too much, taking up too much of my valuable time, and for far too little.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea what Noodles just said to us.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

he said he can get you discount loans

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Is he, you know, "connected"?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well, the writing's on the wall

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm doing just ok, right now. I lucked out and found a regular job and am doing small projects at night. Neither regular nor contract work is paying very well at the moment, but there are an increasing number of listings for jobs here in LA, both on and off-line.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I had no idea one person could be in charge of so many acronyms. He must get the big bucks.

Could anyone explain to me how computers work?

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

magic

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I work in the hotel industry. That's all I will say, keeps it mysterious and shit.

Noodles=Bill Gates.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I cash in student loan checks as the most important part of my Master's program in Western European Studies, the second of my arbitrarily chosen graduate programs. The writing is starting to pay enough that I don't much care what I do in college or how marketable the degrees are, which means I get a lot more out of it (i.e.: school is research).

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally is a concierge

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

haha scaredy cat you must not know anybody in the military

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I know a guy who works for Lockheed Martin, but he's never explained to me how computers work. He did a 180? from sort of anti-American in college to full-fledged Captain America a few short years later, specifically on the issue of the US being "world police"; in college it was bad, after college the whole rest of the world was shit and depended on us. The military sure does a number on some people.

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

A sex concierge if you get my drift.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

No. I do not get your drift. Please be more specific.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I work in the overseas sex tourism industry.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a 'construction worker' and student.

I hate to call it a 'family business' since the employees consist of my grandfather, my father, me and a burnt-out hippie. The former two did construction and roofing for 30 years, then got old, so now mostly sub-contract all the awful work (sheetrocking, roofing, framing). We do demolition, painting, some smaller framing/construction.

I hate it - working in the heat, I could make more going back to bartending/waiting tables - but they'll work around my school schedule and it's keeping me in good shape.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

he said he can get you discount loans

Close, in theory, I could get you lower commission on trades, lower taxation on your RRSP movements and higher yields on our bonds but in reality, I can do nutin for you man.

Noodles=Bill Gates.

I only wish, though unlike Bill, I enjoy a good daily shower too much.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I once heard this story, yo, that Bill Gates had this tv that he clicked a button and it'd come out of the ground and turn on in his bedroom, like Batman. The problem was, it broke and he didn't know how to make it go back underground. So he threw a towel on it! Like it was a bird!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I figure he could pay a demolition crew to destroy the house and rebuild it right the second time if something like that happened.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The owner of my company throws all his furniture on the street every 6 months and buys all new shit, so yeah, Bill Gates probably does things like that, he's got a lot more money than Chris does.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

If he throws out a entertainment center you let me know ok?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a public servant.

isadora (isadora), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

my career as a hand model was viciously cut short by an in-grown thumb nail and unseemly sprouting of "ring finger hair" (as it's known in the trade).

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm supposed to be a grad student in the humanities.. Well, I AM a grad student in the humanities, but it's summer, so I am working as a technology assistant and trying to figure out how to snag some freelance work making websites - I'm not in NYC & looks like there is no specialized temp agency that's going to get me some contract work in the field. I design & code smaller-scale projects but .. I doubt that I'll have time this summer to be learning much PHP, Javascript, ASP and the like.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I work for an educational company (posters, teaching kits, videos); my official title is "Marketing Guy." I also write children's books, sometimes, and travel to a lot of schools as a speaker and writing teacher.

AND I'm a motherfuckin P.I.M.P. Blame my wacky ex-Catholic work ethic!

For money: right now, I'm still temping. That will change.

In my spare time: building a database for Bookslut, and redesigning Stylus. And writing and blogging, but I have less time for that what with all the database building and redesigning and looking for an apartment in Chicago... Christ, I'm busy. What am I doing here?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I run the bar in a restaurant. Hence being around late at night or mid-afternoon only.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I do almost the exact same thing Neudonym does in a similar company. My boss always introduces me as the "marketing person" although I have two job titles here -- promotions coordinator and advertising coordinator. I do not feel connected to my work in any way.

I think my real job is being a writer. It makes me happy. I got a fan e-mail last night that made my YEAR.

Neudonym, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I work in a library, I write and I ponder the universe. The last does not pay well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am unemployed. Please will someone give me something to do with my day other than send my CV off to people and working out how to reduce the number of first person subject pronouns in my coverning letters. I'm pissed off bored and depressed. And I don't want to be an estate agent or a recruitment consultant.

Freelance editing and writing, of various sorts. Most dependable gig is copyediting for the NY Times wire service, which is a very nice place to work -- great people, nice atmosphere, the boss makes cookies. Also still writing some music/movie stuff for my old paper in Knoxville, profiles and reviews for No Depression, and some spec stuff that I really need to get done. Self-imposed deadlines are hard to stick to. (I also occasionally work as an usher at the 92nd St. Y, which was the first part-time job I got when I came to NY -- it doesn't pay diddly, but I've held onto it partly because I get to see a lot of interesting stuff for free.) (And I have to give a shout-out to my wife, whose miserable corporate job and benefits package make all this fluidity possible. We're working on getting her a better one. Anyone in New York need a CPA?)

work: none. nobody even wants to interview me for programming jobs. was web coding and stuff but is historically c and unix.

non-work: thought i'd spend this current 'holiday' picking up new skills to fluff up my cv. started on php, mysql etc and got some way with it but then i started writing opengl screensavers and am now caught up in their shininess. have been reading also, mostly cyberpunk fiction. think i've rediscovered my geek roots.

During the day, I fact-check and copy-edit grade-school textbooks. (This week, it's a 4th-grade Michigan history book.) At night, I play keyboards in a band and try to write about music and culture. I'm also an active member of a Chicago arts organization that helps produce new collaborative art in all media. Of course, I'm constantly trying to balance all of these things, and it doesn't always work out for the best.

I sell and repair pedal bicycles. I specialise in unusual bikes - folders, recumbents and suchlike. I do not like, or stock mountain bikes (though i do fix them) I love the brompton bicycle company. I hate shimano. It's a nice job, but god, the pay is shit. I also repair vacuum cleaners, table lamps, oil-filled radiators, and any household electrical appliance you can carry in to our shop. (ie no fridges or ovens) This I mainly do in wintertime obv.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I work two part time jobs. One as an administrative assistant for one of those businesses that always calls you in the middle of dinner and/or sex.And honestly, we really aren't trying to sell you anything....
I'm also a library clerk, aka the person that does all the work the well paid employees don't want to do.
In my spare time I develop flying by the seat of my paints techniques that keep me with room and board. Current goals include finding one full time job that keeps me financially stable and has the unknown to me bonus of benefits.

Officially, i'm part of the "educated unemployed" again. Tis only while I look for I.T. work (in database work or tech support). In my spare time, I read, listen to music, send out loads of CVs, post here (way too often) and chat to other folk via IM.

Such an exciting life I lead;> But it all has a purpose....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

g) Record producer/engineer
h) All of the above

I'm the music editor of Seattle Weekly; I also contribute reviews and features to Village Voice, City Pages, Rolling Stone, Chicago Reader, Time Out New York, Interview, Stereo-Type, Urb, and anyone else who'll have me. So I'm a slut.

Up until a couple of months ago I was doing development stuff in Jamaica, but I had to leave due to what most of my friends refer to as "mafia bizness." I also used to work in publishing and wish I could run my own publishing company so I could work on more books like "King Jammy`s" (the best book I ever worked on--It`s terrific. I never did find out what Mr. Matos thought of it though...)

As I've said before, I'm starting at a local art school in September for Furniture Making/Cabinetry and will hopefully leave this hellhole and put myself to some good use.

Mr Noodles - do you work in Surrey?? do you work for S*n m1cr05y5tem5?

Surrey? nope, never been to BC. And I can only wish I worked for Sun, then I'd be a true computer geek. The guy behind me did work at Microsoft in the 90s though. We stole him 7 years or so ago so I can only dream of how much we are paying him.
The work sucks, but the work enviroment in my office is relatively grebt which is making it all that hard to leave.

I am assistant engineer (and just all around studio assistant guy) in a NYC private recording studio, where we make lots of groovy jingles and also record some *stars*. That's what I do for a living. Plus I make music on my own, some of which has been released under the moniker Duermo (see: "Sunrunners" compilation from 2000).

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a freelance technical writer and editor - who also does layout and design crap but hates that end of things.

And I pretty much have burned-out on that field and now I am trying to figure-out what to do with the rest of my life (an MLS is looking appealing, but so is teaching English to ESL students, too). And Geology and History are fascinating to me, too - too many interests and only one makes money and I don't like it any more. *sigh* I need a sugar daddy or sugar mommy so I can stay home and read.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Thursday, 3 July 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i *love* the design end of things. I only wish that was a reliable source of income for me these days.

Dee, half of the kids I teach are ESL and my plan this year is to get ESL certification so I can do that full time. Those kids rock. You should go for it.
