The Censor Swoops

One minute that fucko Spooner was posting shit insults the next, the ilx behemoth swallowed up his world. I feel funny, man. I don’t think I like it. I mean I was about to post some idle rebuffs to this dick and before you can say ‘Calum really did fuck the boards’ the whole thing is just smoke. So how does everyone else feel? Has anyone noticed the hand of the censor yet? I mean I’m not blaming the moderators for the way the whole thing has played out but at the same time, I never saw it in action like that before. It’s not pretty.

ADMIN: personal vendettas, vigilante action, etc

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:28 (twenty years ago) link

I know it's bad and shameful and reprehensible, but it's become almost like a game - how many nasty jibes can you get in before the admins shut the thread down?

This is bad and irresponsible and I know it, but it's also strangely pleasurable. I will try to stop. I promise.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:30 (twenty years ago) link

I have absolutely no problem with anything Mark or the other moderators does on this subject whatsoever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:33 (twenty years ago) link

You know I read all the guidelines carefully Mark, before I posted this thread, and I was more just reflecting on the experience of witnessing the close-down first hand. But now that I think on it, does this very thread fall into the remit of the objectionable? I feel a bit sad is all, I suppose, even though I am able to see and comprehend the perceived necessity for a reaction from ilx to the shit that was going down. It’s just a shame to see the full force of the leviathan in all it’s terrible glory. And I can't help thinking that people with reductive agendas and boring, little minds have won in some way.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:36 (twenty years ago) link

I feel like i've been away but i have been here the whole time - Who is Spooner (and without dredging up his actions what did he do, besides that god awful groovejet tune haha **sorry**)

james (james), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

Alex, saying you understand what had to be done and proceeding to implicitly attack Mark and those other moderators who evolved the policy for doing just that doesn't wash. This subject had been discussed for (quite literally) some months -- the decision to create and enforce the policy was not taken lightly and involved a heck of a lot of debate. If you want to chalk it all up to 'reductive agendas' and 'boring little minds' you are doing those who work hard on these boards -- precisely because they love the interaction and experience here -- a grave disservice.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 11:48 (twenty years ago) link

I _think_ Alex is just saying this is a shame, and Noting The Moment. Which is a dead-end: I say suck it and see for a while, then talk about whether things have changed too much.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:00 (twenty years ago) link

yes, i took alex to be saying that it's the poster who continues to incur auto-deletion who's the one with the reductive agenda, rather than the deleters

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:04 (twenty years ago) link

Heavens! I agree with Mark and Andrew ;-)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:40 (twenty years ago) link

Mark, in which case, how has That Poster 'won'? From what I can gather, it's the exact opposite, now he's had his playground taken away.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:44 (twenty years ago) link

And it's hardly as if it's ripped the heart and soul out of ILX - if anything it's been returning to form recently.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:45 (twenty years ago) link

It's more a case of having a community change and deciding if it's a good or bad thing than anything else, Matt. There's also a question of motivation; some Internet agitators target groups that say, "Oh, we're open and welcoming of everybody" to make them censorious (and therefore hypocritical). If that's the case here, the agitator HAS won and the real question is "Is that victory worth getting upset over?"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:49 (twenty years ago) link

erm you have to ask alex that, matt!!

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:49 (twenty years ago) link

i think the locking and deleting of c*l*m threads may have gone a bit too far - just in that it results in inconsistent management. i'm not sure there was any reason to lock the 'Bjork has hairy nipples' thread per se as if it had come from someone else it would probably still be accessible, however inane the topic was (there's been just as bad from other posters, myself included probably) - of course you could predict how the thread was likely to go and that may have been deemed sufficient reason to lock it.

on the other hand, as childish as it may seem, i wouldnt want c*l*m to think he has managed to disrupt an entire board so successfully and create such debate, perceived as an achievement just for tying to 'shock' or whatever. sometimes it was fun (SommerMute's pics), sometimes it was horrible (petty spineless abuse directed at particular posters who couldnt let it lie). i just hope he doesnt find a way to duplicate himself...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

still i bet he got some good spamporn out of it.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:52 (twenty years ago) link

An "agitator" who is persistently dishonest — for example claiming to be in favour of freedom of expression but always and very deliberately launching personal attacks on anyone who disagrees, or posting under other people's names, or generally misrepresenting himself and his agenda — wins if he succeeds in shutting down that community (in other words, reducing freedom of expression)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 12:54 (twenty years ago) link

Ned my man, you misread or misunderstood my post completely. In no way am I attacking the moderators (I thought I was supporting their action, and I certainly said that I understood it). There is no implicit attack - just a guniune response to the censor (of which a moderator is only a part). I was rather just interested in other people's reations here.

"The decision to create and enforce the policy was not taken lightly and involved a heck of a lot of debate." That you feel this needs to be underlined to me in fact does me a disservice :-(

For the record, and to avoid further confusion, I think the moderators do a sterling service to us all. It's a dirty job la la la. I've been around here for a while now and I think we all owe the people who make this bitch tick a cigar.

Dan Perry spotted what I was saying, the boring, little minds minds I was referring to are those of the agitators and I am thankful you were able to see that too Mark. On your point, Dan, is it anything to get too upset about? Well, not really I guess now that I've thought about it for an hour or so, but from an idealist position (which was undermined the moment Calum and his ilk began posting with any regularity), it is as though some of our freedom here has been sacrificed (albeit to protect us all from extraneous and unwanted attacks). I guess that's what I struggle with... Is there anything wrong with idealism, even in the face of ignorance and idiocy?

Yeah, the heart and soul of ilx is intact... Probably.

It is always gonna be tricky talking about censorship, especially when those pressed to fulfil the role of censor (unwillingly, I would guess) are standing by. I'm sorry if anyone thought I was undermining the effort and thought that goes into making ilx possible.

Lastly, Andrew Farrel probably has it right - maybe I should have just shut up and let the dust settle.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 13:08 (twenty years ago) link

Calum has an ilk?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 13:27 (twenty years ago) link

we are not working on that assumption

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 13:28 (twenty years ago) link

"The decision to create and enforce the policy was not taken lightly and involved a heck of a lot of debate." That you feel this needs to be underlined to me in fact does me a disservice :-(

I do apologize for the confusion on this point. I will say that having been a list moderator for a number of years I have heard any number of complaints about agendas and the like whenever a poster went out of line -- complaints FROM such a poster (or those who felt that my reaction might have been too much) about what I was supposedly doing. So to my mind your end comment can be read one way as much as it could the other (to Mark's credit, he sensed your meaning more thoroughly).

Lastly, Andrew Farrel probably has it right - maybe I should have just shut up and let the dust settle.

Well, debate is a good thing, after all. I sympathize with your idealism more than you might think -- personally I felt Calum was little more than an attention-seeking irritant for the most part, though in recent months his spitefulness and baiting of other posters grew wearying, to put it mildly. But when push came to shove, I was glad to see him gone and I think the policy drawn up -- which again reminds me of my own experience since a few months into running my lists I was also forced by circumstances to draft and enforce a policy -- is something that allows for the ideal existence of ILX while noting that in practice there are people who can and will abuse its ideals. Drawing a line in that case seems to be the only logical response.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 13:44 (twenty years ago) link

Didn't I see that Calum is now going out with Emma Bunton? ho ho.

oops, I just googled "calum best emma bunton" and we're hit #3

=:o

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 13:53 (twenty years ago) link

"Calum has an ilk?" - sorry, I meant rather that his appearance flagged the possibility of more 'Calum's' materialising.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:05 (twenty years ago) link

If anything, it's interesting to see how subjective censorship can be and how human those who do the censoring can be.
I mean, those who make the calls for censoring more, uh, widespread things, are often not much different from those who have to make those decisions here. Probably better paid though.

What this ongoing ILX growth and debate shows is that censorship is rarely as mechanical as people think of it. I'm not saying I'm pro-censorship, but I am pro-understanding, and I'm glad that the process here is fairly transparent and that people feel comfortable enough to question things and that those who get questioned feel comfortable enough to make sincere efforts to answer for themselves.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:05 (twenty years ago) link
