Lars von Trier's tour de force Twin Peaks in ER's clothing hospital nightmare - what say ye?

CLASSIC!

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 4 July 2003 16:37 (twenty years ago) link

TOTAL CLASSIC. and I haven't even seen the second series.

I love the title song they had on the UK release. And the way Dr Hook presented the Eurovision when it was in Denmark.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 4 July 2003 17:24 (twenty years ago) link

How many episodes are there?

I have 1 through 5 sitting in my DVD tray right now.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 4 July 2003 17:26 (twenty years ago) link

There's two series, 5 episodes each.

I went to London for the day just to see the second one. 5 hours sat in the ICA cinema. Loved every genius minute.

Sadly the actor who played Swedish doctor matey (Ernst-Hugo Järegård) died in 1998 so I doubt there'll be any more.

Tag (Tag), Friday, 4 July 2003 18:08 (twenty years ago) link

Classic. Shame about Mr Jaregard, particularly given the cliffhanger at the end of the second series.......

Jamie Conway (Jamie Conway), Friday, 4 July 2003 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

Should I watch all of these tonight, then?

In the dark.

Cozen (Cozen), Friday, 4 July 2003 18:34 (twenty years ago) link

The first series is marvy. I haven't seen the 2nd. I think it's rentable, though; I need to look. I love it at the end of the episodes when Lars pops up and does these cheezy "see ya next time" spots.

Haha I love that devil sign he does.

eight years pass...

Just watched both series in about a week. Fantastic stuff. So sad that the actors who played Helmer and Mrs Drusse and the male washerupper all died not long after the second series, I can only imagine how the third series would've unravelled.

Best wishes to Von Trier, but the drop in quality from the first part of The Kingdom to the second is the most drastic I've ever experienced with a sequel.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 17 December 2020 17:51 (three years ago) link

Really?

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 17 December 2020 18:55 (three years ago) link

Yes, with the caveat that most of the films I watch don't have sequels made. I have seen all his features except the last two, and I would rank Kingdom Season 1 as second-best, and Kingdom Season 2 as worst (even below Manderlay). The tension he built up in the first season just vanished, and the pacing became totally leaden as it trudged through arbitrary plot points.

Had this idea I was going to rewatch first but maybe it’s best just to dive in.

The Dark End of the Tweet (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 28 November 2022 02:21 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I remember little of series 2 but it’s not hard to follow (yet).

Chris L, Monday, 28 November 2022 02:25 (one year ago) link

finally catching up with this (just finished s1, started s2)

i knew abt it on first UK TV broadcast in the mid90s but missed it (video not working? i can't recall) and kicked myself at the time bcz it sounded great

it's more broader and slapstick than i imagined (which is fine)

mark s, Monday, 28 November 2022 11:31 (one year ago) link

i loved K1, never saw K2. am looking forward to a rewatch ahead of exodus.

are there any Danish ilxors?

sarahell, Monday, 5 December 2022 02:44 (one year ago) link

Watching episode 10 right now and already I’m thinking that Exodus is just far, further out than what season one or two could ever have done. Not too dissimilar in how Twin Peaks: The Return is higher-octane distillation of the original TP. Of course this is something that happens with aging.

Also, it’s funny as fuck.

We’re still critiquing the Swedish Anonymous segment in ep 10 w.r.t. sexual harassment at Zentropa and I suppose the fact that we are means that Lars has won. Glad to have him back.

I guess maybe the way to do this is watch the new episodes first as they appear and then go back and watch the old ones as time permits.

I like how I can’t always be sure if somebody is a replacement of sorts or from the original cast, although as far as I can tell there are only the two obvious successor characters. No, make it four.

I wonder how much of this is informed by Lars' experience in the global health care industry

So this wrapped up in a pretty Lars-like fashion, alright.

Chris L, Tuesday, 27 December 2022 01:17 (one year ago) link

This reminded a little bit of the X-files with the arrogant science vs funny spiritualism thing between the Swedish doc and the old lady. That keeps the first series going for me.

Any sense of that is abandoned, it becomes a lot more random by the 2nd season, real "what can we fuck with?" vibe but I end up not caring. Not sure I can get to the end of it.

Really one of the best things Trier has ever done.
