Retro '50s Fashion, C/D?

Okay so I never thought I'd ask this question, never thought it would get to this point, but I just got back from Wildwood and I'm majorly feeling the faux '50s vibe. So there's this poodle necklace right, I think it could be a good introductory point, cause I'm not sure I'm ready for the poodle skirt, and what else? tight sweaters? I don't look good in those anyway.... what else is '50s? bobby socks? I don't think so.... Drive-in movies? hell yea.... Well Gareth was in his usual panic at 99x cause it was all Anglocentric and against the rules of course....but afterward we really regretted not buying the poodle necklace... Then again, there was some uncertain regret about not buying a brown Paul Frank trucker hat for me, it had green trees on it, I know I know, but I tried it on for a laugh it actually kind of suited me? I think.... But only because it was Paul Frank, and built for girls... I mean, I wouldn't even consider wearing one of those things under any other circumstance... So Felicity wanted to know how to get girl-sized hats, you might want to check out the PF ones at Metropolis, but that was ages ago, I know you're onto something else by now.... Anyway, '50s clothing style, classic or dud, and make suggestions, as usual, as to what should I wear....

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Also dangerously pointy (you could have someone's eye out with those) tits. That is what 50s fashion is all about (for girls).

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

OK there's a film I need to pin down with some great girl style but I can't remember the title so from this synopsis can someone pin down the title (before I go insane)

4 men bored of drinking in the same bar and going home to their wives buy an apartment and install a blonde in the apartment to use as their joint mistress. She is secretly a Phd. student researching (post kinsey) men's sexual habits. She eventually goes off with the divorcee who coaches the little league team upstate. No adultery occurs (this is the 50s godamnit), but there is much hilarity.

Answers on a postcard please.

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I realise that this is 1960 but

Jean Seberg

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

there is adultery in the book the seven year itch but not in the movie

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, what you need is a handbag. A good ladylike clasp-fastening handbag. It changes your whole demenour.
Also: short-sleeved fitted shirts, cute heels, circle skirts, just below the knee pencil skirts, head scarves tied with the bow on top of the head, small scarves to go around neck, perfectly applied flick of black liquid liner, prom dresses.

This thread makes me happy.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and a cardigan. Preferably with 3/4 length sleeves and a button/ hook and eye at the neck line.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you Anna;)

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG!!!! 50'S STYLE AINT' EVEN FEELN' IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

james (james), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway I hit "Submit" before it was even time.

You want to feel it baby? You got with me Honey. . . /

Real old school hot R&B Gareth has got, add old-school R&B and some classic soul you got scary R&B.

All alone you got some hot fuckin' music

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Are cherries rockabilly? Cause I got a white skirt with red cherries on it in Wildwood. It's a bit big cause it was the only size they had left so it may look a bit full and hoop skirtish. I didn't get this super faux I think it was bright pink knee length skirt with this overall pattern in black of women walking their poodles I think. Did I make a mistake or did I act wisely?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

My aunt was a model in the late '50s and totally rocked the Grace Kelly look. But in the words of John Waters, are you going for hair-hopper or Joe College?

You might also search the film Bell, Book and Candle: Kim Novak as beatnik witch.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Joe College might be more doable for me, as much as I might like to try hair hopper.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna's on it. Again, it's all about the music and the hot boyz. With these two thing you don't need me.

That said here are my suggestions:
Crinolines
Circle Skirts
Grease stains on yr pillowcases
bustiers
cuban seams and thigh high stockings
sex and the deep south

WE GOT IT ALL BABY!!
;)

OH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's so rockabilly. Are we having a threesome now??

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I like those big white knickers they used to wear. Modern pants always cut across the arse, which isn't aesthetically pleasing to me. I also like those pointed bras. I suppose these things make me a sort of retro perve.

fougasse (Jake Proudlock), Monday, 14 July 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

girls who wear rockabilly clothes are called lesbians

sean g, Monday, 14 July 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway, for the boys it's all about shark skin zoot suits (are they really made out of shark skin?) and brogues

sean g, Monday, 14 July 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

audrey's looking a bit bobby socks here but aside from the tucked in tie and the odd pose, gregory peck's looking good.

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I know this is more early 60s but I'm LOVING everything Marc Jacobs is doing these days.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ewwww, sorry but that is so primark

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, just come borrow half of the clothing I wear to work. When I'm not being lazy and/or electroclash I have a somewhat modernized late-50s/early-60s work wardrobe. This dates to when they babysat me at the store and forced me to buy things they liked.

I don't do the full skirt thing, always pencil skirts, but am thinking I should start doing it.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I love full skirts! Unfortunately I cannot find a new one that is very nice -- they all seem to be made rather shabbily -- and the vintage ones tend to be on the smallish side.

Lars (Nicole), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

primark?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps it is appropriate I am listening to a Chet Baker collection while reading this thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if you started dressing like him.

Lars (Nicole), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There is this unbelievably hot Jessica McClintock (!!? Never thought I'd say those words together) at Bloomingdales that was only about $110 amazingly. Satiny, full skirt, very 50s prom but I really saw no reason to purchase it considering I'm nto going to a prom anytime soon.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if you started dressing like him.

So long as you don't insist I start looking him late in life as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

When it's hot out and I'm feeling self-conscious in shorts I wear rolled up jeans with loafers (no socks) and a t-shirt. This may or may not have anything to do with the 50's.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

NB fashion advice from me should be taken with a pinch of salt. Today I am wearing a purple sarong and the top half of a set of kurta that has gone pink in the wash.

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You're David Beckham?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

fashion advice should not be taken from ed at all

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Jean Seberg cannot counteract the pink tights

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Jean Seberg can counteract anything, even pink tiger print leggings.

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i can certainly appreciate a big ole 50s american car.

Leaves more room for some serious necking in the back seat.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooo, crinolines rock. especially when there are some ruffled panties, garters and stockings beneath. Wheee!

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

when i worked 3 shift at a gas station there was a 50s era chevy malibu with keys parked, just sitting there for most of the summer. naturally i seized the option & made it mine, there was no crinoline , no necking, just dreaming back there( my gf was far away at the time) but i would play the oldies station @ my acoustic and pass out in a reverbed pall mall*whiskey haze. i miss shitpay -jobs sometimes. i also miss the 50's.

kephm, Thursday, 17 July 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting, why are horse shoes '50s? I wanted the cheapo horse shoe earings from UA in my Funny Cide phase, but they had the weirdo backings so I passed.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i love this look on women anna makes some great suggestions above... something just works abt it and it's pretty timeless... andything that reminds me of grace kelly/audrey hepburn = a v good thing

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It is important that we distinguish between '50s and early '60s.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 17 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I prefer the early '60s--you can be 1958, I will be 1962.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

late 50s/early 60s = much of a muchness

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is about iconic 50s fashion; early 60s lovers should perhaps start their own thread.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok ok ok. But I still think most of the thread has been late 50s!

Where can we get one of those huge circle skirts? I want one.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Stelfox, you are so cute. We are trying to split hairs over our bobbysox here. The mid- to late 1950s were the height of planned obsolescence in design. When the design of semi-durables like cars varied wildly from year to year (look at '56 to '57), imagine the variation in something as ephemeral as ladies' fashion.

The details matter! It's very important! Doing this wrong would be like carrying a Vuitton Stephen Sprouse graffiti bag in 2002!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

crosspost from the veritable flock of harpies here

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't dissing on you Ally! Anthropologie might have something approximating a circle skirt.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha you disrespect me! You disrespect my family! You are dead to me!! ;)

I just really want a big silly skirt. Actually, like I said, Jessica McClintock (!!!!! still) had this great white silk dress, 50s prommy looking thing with a big skirt and a crinoline and I might still go buy it at L&T but my god what the hell would I be wearing that to?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity and mary would make great consultants on a Hollywood period piece!

eisenhower era /= kennedy era

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

what the hell would I be wearing that to?

baltimore fap '03?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

link

What I like about this film is how Marilyn, Lauren & Betty all say "Creamy" instead of "Dreamy." I've tried using it a few times and it always ends up sounding weird.

Mandee, Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Stelfox, you are so cute.

can i cut this out and keep it?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

If you do, it means we are practically engaged. I can't wait to tell the girls!

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I like 2003. But I like every year I'm in at the present time, so next year I'll like 2004.

i meant just so's i can show it to people who might think otherwise... but what the hell, why not...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

but on a more serious note, i didn't actually realise that there was a massive difference in style between the v late 50s and the v early 60s...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

there isn't! i mean they're right next to each other on the timeline. but just as 2002's fasions aren't 2003's fashions, one can't very well be sporting a breakfast at tiffany's look and claim to be representing 1958!

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, that would be a right howler, wouldn't it dear?

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It'd be worse to wear the pink dress Marilyn sports in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and think you are representing Some Like It Hot!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

my tongue would probably be hanging too far out of my mouth to nitpick at that point.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a big difference between something like Dior's new look and the designs of people like Pierre Cardin and Courreges in the early sixties. It's a complete shift in terms of silhouette and draping.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Boys, we realize the closeness of the timeline, but we (I) want to discuss '50s and not '60s.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, circle skirts and crinolines can be found at that place near St. Mark's, Love is All Around, i think?

Mary, the horseshoe ties in with the Western ranch-style popular in the 40s/50s.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and Ally, get the white, prommy, full skirt dress and wear it everywhere, baby! I've often gone out to clubs like Emo's (dirty punk rock club in Austin) to see dirty punk rock bands dressed in an impeccable dress with full skirt, crinoline, stockings, heels and matching handbag. Nothing more glamorous and stylish!

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to wear it to ride the Chinatown bus at breakneck speeds down to Baltimore, that seems suitably inexplicable.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 17 July 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That is basically what I wear to work every single day.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
im pretty new to 50s fashion as i just came out of a flower power phase, but what would you guys say are the absolute essentials of mid-late 50s fashion?

Annie-Lou, Friday, 8 August 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The panty girdle, for that mandatory no-wobble look.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Friday, 8 August 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Pencil skirts, wide garters, tight sweaters, make-up colors which are limited to black and red.

HOTT.

Ms Hamson, Sunday, 17 August 2003 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
I have a question. Back in the 50's they wore scarves, well duh but they put them on one side which meant they were taken and the other side they were single. What is it?

Lauren Lende, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Colored handkerchiefs worn in the back pocket are a shorthand for sexual preferences, known as "flagging." Worn on the left, they indicate that the wearer plays the active role, and on the right, the passive role. Beware: the meanings of the minor colors can vary.
