Who has experiences good or bad with temping agencies in the capital ? Who is cool ? Who is not ? I know (obv.) that Temping is in itself pretty dud but it's an emergency.

Talisman (google them for their website) were fine - place a lot of people for IPC affiliates - all boring officey stuff but quite tolerable

were the best agency i found in a year of london temping. they have nice offices and the jobs they found me were slightly less mind-numbing than most. also they're not a huge company a la Adecco, Reed etc so you get a bit more personal attention.

but in general, you have my sympathies because temping in london is one of the most miserable experiences i have ever gone though. hope it doesn't last too long!

nine years pass...

I need to get out of waiting tables but I can't even land a temp job. Has anybody done this lately that could help me figure out how temp agencies work at the very least. Another week of mailing out cvs will crush whatever spirit i have left cowering somewhere

i dunno but i used to just phone up and visit the agencies I think and then they register you.

what kind of work are you after?

Step Ahead are pretty good. They'll register you and actively look for work on your behalf (but it helps to show willing and hassle them a bit). Most of their placements are in education, libraries, museums, etc. My brother's done some library work with them in the past and some stuff at the Nat. Hist.

i registered with fairstaff 10 years ago (i think now called HCL fairstaff) if medical secretary etc work is good and you don't mind working in a hospital (ideally knowledge of medical terminology is a bonus but general computer/secretarial skills is more important probably).

the organisation i work for now use hays i think

get somebody to recommend you, i probably applied for 200 jobs without a single interview. then my gf who was temping was like "hey my bf wants a job" and they sorted me out the next day. with big agencies and unspecialised shit office jobs it's a total lottery/

Plax - I got the job I worked in London through a temp agency. I believe it was called Adecco and they were very good. The branch I went through was near Victoria Station but I think they have them all over. I just walked in one day with my resume and was like, uh, I need a job.
