Store Cats

(Inspired by the Pub Dogs thread.)

What experiences have you had with cats (or other animals, for that matter) resident in stores?

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Store cats are great, especially in bookstores, though the whole proposition is def'ly twee.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Part of me believes that every bookstore should have at least one resident cat, although those who are allergic to the little critters might say otherwise.

The weirdest encounter I had with a store cat was at Second Story Books in Bethesda, MD. One of the cats that used to live there wrapped itself around my neck and started sucking on my earlobe.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

S1utsky can you type up the text of that sign in the window of the English-language bookstore in Montreal, the one across from Schwartz's deli. It's a great sign.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Here is a story that has minimal amounts to do with me:

My friend C**** went out drinking with some coworkers one night a few years back, at the local bar, Peter's. Peter's has several "house cats" that run around the place. C**** dislikes cats. C**** plays soccer. C**** is a huge alcoholic (from what I can tell). The combination of the three resulted in C**** picking up one of the cats and drop kicking it across the bar. He was banned from entrance for a long, long time.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking of that very sign when I wrote that post, though unfortunately I couldn't remember the exact wording. I'll jot it down next time I'm by.

Every time you kick a kitten, God... oh nevermind.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

...masturbates?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

record store cats are great, specially the super relaxed ones that demand everyone pet them before they leave.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the cats I most admire is a fish market cat who lives in the fish market near my house. He is a big orange fellow and he just lies in the window next to the ice shelf watching the passersby and looking worldly and content. In my next life I would like to be a big orange fish market cat.

Paul Eater (eater), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Store cats are awesome. Bookstore cats (and dogs) are the most common here, but we also have them at a local kitchenware boutique. When Nick & I visited his sister, one of the kittens we saw was in a small grocery store behind the freezer (yes, it was alive, it was just keeping cool).

I want a small business so I can get another kitty.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be more impressed by Ally's story if it had ended in C**** soccer-juggling a cat.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ginger and pickles to thread!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Heheh Dan, the barkeep wouldn't let it get to that, she came flying at C**** in a screaming fury and beat him with fists!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Heavens! I beat you with fists ;-)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a porn stage direction if ever there was one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

How would you get an raised eyebrow inside- no, I will not finish that question.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

usually its warm behind a freezer or fridge. Heat exchange and all that wonderful stuff.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

C**** should have headed a cat at the irate barkeep.

C**** = C*l*m?

Leee (Leee), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The first time I went to Mexico I remember being mildly shocked at cats roaming the aisles of a grocery. But I wuv kitties, so it was no big deal. The litter box was reasonably far away from the deli.

Local record store has a resident cat, a black named Vinyl. Per their FAQ:

What's the cat's name?
Vinyl... or Kitten, Little One, Cutie Pie, Baby Girl, Mouse, Rat, Worm, Weasel, You Little Monster, Chubs, Tub-a-Love, Allergen, or anything else that spills out of our mouths...

Does the cat stay in the store all the time, or does she go home with you?
The cat only lives in the store. When we close, she walks into the vinyl and disappears like the players in Field of Dreams.

They even sell artwork with her on it:

The Lowe's (giant hardware store, if you don't know) in my old neighborhood had a store cat. She had a collar and a tag and just hung out between the shelves all day.

The cat at my local drycleaners is always just permanently asleep in a pile of plastic wrapped suits on the left of the counter, and then whenever you put your item of clothing on the counter it wakes up and comes and sits on it and just stares at you.

Shop cats at nurseries/garden centers are the best. They have entire jungles to rule.

Donovan Dagnabbit (WmC), Friday, 10 September 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

I liked looking at the shop cats on the website get bent linked to above, but all the UK ones were added 10 years ago and were already several years old, so it is pretty bittersweet :'(

My old job was near two different pubs with pub cats. I miss them now. One of them was a real massive bruiser of a cat, probably a fancy breed judging by its squashed face and long silver-white hair, but it would go out hunting rabbits in the fields near the pub and come back all matted and bedraggled. They had a tiny cat too, short-haired and looked about a quarter of the size, so I was surprised to be told it was the mother.

Big one was hit by a truck; don't know what became of the little one as the pub stopped doing food and therefore stopped being a good lunch stop. RIP big guy

One of the shop cats at Recycle, a lovely bookstore in San Jose. They have super-long aisles that the cats dutifully patrol.

I used to work a Saturday afternoon at an RSPCA Charity shop and Henry (who lived nearby) for some reason would come into the shop most mornings and go to sleep on the counter all day, which was cute but made it very tough to wrap things for people sometimes.

His brother also visited occasionally, but was a little bit more skittish and motivated by food.

Henry, however, did mooch for treats but seemed more interested in the general hang, loads of people would come into the shop just to say hi.

On occasion, he would sleep on the shelf under the glass countertop and I would prop a sign by him, 'Dissociated Feline £5', things like that.
