Chelsea

I was going to post this in the Transfer News and Speculation thread, but I reckon it probably deserves a thread of its own.

Now, I hate Chelsea, as much if not more than I hate Arsenal. Hating Chelsea is just what I do, despite me liking and admiring a handful of their players. So the fact that a genuinely exciting and amazing Champions League contending Chelsea team is now a real possibility annoys me somewhat. Mostly because I think "he could have bought Spurs!" but also because I can see them playing mouthwatering Real Madrid-esque football just a couple of seasons down the line.

So, post-Abramovich Chelsea - death of football or the dawn of a great new era? And what will happen to the Chelsea old guard, with Gudjohnsen, Hasselbaink, Stanic, Lampard, Le Saux, Gronkjaer and a boatload of others all likely to look surplus to requirements in the near future?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you noticed how many players don't want to play for Chelski? Now I just can't wait till the Braziliian underworld buys into the Premiership. FIFA referee turned billionaire my ass.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I just don't understand how Jimi from Doves has maintained his cover this long.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Mixed feelings - I have supported CFC for over 30 yrs, most of which have been fairly dismal times, so I suppose I should be excited about the future. Really though I'm very suspicious of Abramovich and worried about the consequences of him leaving just as quickly as he came, leaving us saddled with a huge wage bill and no money. I hope Ranieri can survive this, but I suspect that he'll go before long. Also - nothing much has happened yet - we've only signed Geremi and Johnson, neither of whom will transform the team. I hope to god we don't sign Veron. Of all the players you mentioned, Matt, Lampard may be the only one with a future at Chelsea beyond the next 6 months.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is Jodie Morris going to Cardiff?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Abramovich looks into signing some Manchester chancer.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Bollocks. Imagine Jimi from doves in that box. They're the same man I tells yer!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Post-Abramovich, Matt? I share Dr C's worries (well, as an interested observer, not a fan), but I think you're jumping the gun a little...

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Post-Abramovich's arrival, I mean ;)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you noticed how many players don't want to play for Chelski?

I assume you mean Vieri, Ronaldinho etc ... Abramovich has largely been bidding for the best players in the world (well those not covetted by Real Madrid) and naturally these players want to play for the top teams. Chelsea do not have the perception of being one of these elite clubs (yet). A good showing in this seasons Champions League will change this. They will come - only later rather than sooner.

The interest shown in young British talent (Johnson, Duff, Bridge)is heartening - so hopefully the likes of Lampard and Carlton Cole will not be frozen out.

oh, and I hate Spurs, as much if not more than I hate Arsenal :)

David_X (David_X), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because you are an idiot.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

*ignoring jonnie*

i think Jody Morris to Cardiff is a good fit all round - good for Cardiff as he is a fine player, good for Jody in the big fish/small pond way. can't wait for the first niteclub incident.

David_X (David_X), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait: Chelsea throwing money against the wall on over-rated footballers, nearly all of whom have Italian league experience. This differs from their previous stratergy how?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Geremi and Johnson's Italian experience = SFA

chris (chris), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep imagining Chelski as being owned by Jerzy Balowski. This almost makes it all better.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Chelsea's odds on winning the Premiership have remained pretty constant though, even despite this announcement. Weird...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Damien Duff is not British.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

he's from the British Isles ...

David_X (David_X), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And does anyone else get annoyed by the word 'Chelski'? I mean, it's not even the right fucking country!

Dr C - can you really see Abramovich spunking a load of cash all over Stamford Bridge and then buggering off? I mean, he may be one of the richest men in the world but it's hardly pocket change to him, is it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

and if he really has cleared the £80m or so debt then we'd hardly be a worse position if he gets bored.

David_X (David_X), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno what all the fuss is about. like, we've never seen an ultra rich benefactor take on an underachieving club and offer lots of money to make them European Champions? Doesnt work, does it? When did Blackburn last win the Champions league?

So, Abramovich is Supa Ultra Rich? can't see any development really. buying 'the best players in the world' doesnt make you the best team in the world. It just gives you a team full of coke-addicts.

and, as pointed out earlier, why would these players really want to go to chelsea, other than for naked greed?
ambition ?!?!??!!?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Never underestimate the power of naked greed.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Kings Road has some nice shops.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Lampard's been promised pie bonuses based on Champions League success. And let's face it, wouldn't we all like to see our clubs on the back pages of the Sunday tabloids being linked with the world's top players?

G-String, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking this would be another Clinton-related thread started by the Pinefox.

Lars (Nicole), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

?????

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The g, it's he.

Anyway G, your players are always splashed over the papers. Admittedly it's either that they are being sold or that they have been making unsavoury holiday videos.....

chris (chris), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And let's face it, wouldn't we all like to see our clubs on the back pages of the Sunday tabloids being linked with the world's top players?

it's certainly making my pre-season.

David_X (David_X), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But Dave, what will happen when you draw Rochdale in the Lager cup? Whither your new millionaires commitment then eh?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but your pre-season doesn't include a glamorous away tie at Thurrock on Thursday does it?

It's all very well lining up Lazio, but you can't pop down to Lakeside afterwards, can you?

G-String, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Chelsea seem fairly sensible at the moment. All the talk of Gerrard for £50 million or Vieri for whatever amount strike me as made up. Look at who they have signed, a right back from a team with one of the worst defences last season (admittedly he has some promise) and a water carrying type midfield player who looks, you know, ok. I'd be very surprised if they sign anyone staggering this season, I don't think it is Ranieri's way and I suspect he's fairly contented with his squad anyway. If he loses his job though things could get silly.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Geremi is MUCH better than that, and Johnson was the best player in West Ham's defence last year, which is admittedly about like being the best igloo maker in Mali. I don't know who else they will sign, but some of the signings sound decent business, even though some sound ludicrous and very improbable.

I'd be so happy if some rich person bought Bristol Rovers. Doesn't have to be billionaire rich - someone who gives us security and gets us so we aren't having to sell every decent player we find/develop would be fine.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

have they signed emerson?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

no. he's talking to Roma about a new contract. he could just be using chelsea as a bargaining tool. but who knows...

duff looked great in the last 30mins against malaysia. his link-up with jimmy and eidur already has me drooling

latest rumour is that another attempt was made to sign raul. (he said no).

I feel sorry for Damien Duff.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

he's feeling sorry for himslef enough, he don't need you too. (and then he can come to Liverpool like he should have done)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Who will be the first disgruntled midfielder to hand in a transfer request, I wonder? Will Chelsea actually bother to sell anyone in the summer or will they just keep sitting on midfielders just so no one else can have them?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Cole, definitely

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel sorry for Damien Duff.

why? i should imagine he's quite chuffed at being in the Champions League QF (not to mention sitting 2nd in the prem), his personal conribution to the team has been acclaimed by pretty much everyone. when he's fit he plays. don't see the problem really. if you are thinking about the arrival of Robben - there is no reason why they can't play in the same side. Both are as effective through the middle as on the left (very much in the giggs mould)

who will leave? petit, jimmy, stanic, melchiot ... not joe cole (just the usual tabloid bollox).

who will come? a right-sided midfielder/winger(joachim/nedved/beckham pls mr abramovich) and a right back. (oh and if liverpool implode then owen.)

David_X (David_X), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

duff described the robben transfer as "a kick in the teeth"

pete s, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that phrase; he's very honest, instead of that usual 'we love having grebt players come here and potentially ruining our careers as it shows we are on the up as a club' even-handed shite. At last, the truth.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously a man who has never been actually kicked in the teeth though.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

chris (chris), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Eyal Berkovic to thread!

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

David X's belief in Julian Joachim is refreshing in these days of Carlos Kickaballs and, perhaps, prescient?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 11 March 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Eyal Berkovic to thread!

hahaha

I so wanted Hartson to reenact that when he came to Celtic Park - it was however the easiest way to get shot of Berkovic without actually sacking him for being a lazy useless git...

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

No one can afford Duff, can they? Even if he does want to move, Chelsea paid over the odds for him and its unlikely that even Abramovich would let him go for less than £17m.

The likely scenario is that we'll end up with a situation where younger players will plump for United, Liverpool or even Newcastle as opposed to Chelsea for the sake of their own career.

I was very moved just now by Claude Makelele getting a (very poor) last minute winner for Chelsea today - the sheer happiness on the faces of all the team, plus those on the bench, as they congratulated him at great length was very touching. I think this affected me partly just on an empathic basis, but also because I admire Makalele hugely, and he's the sort of player who is persistently underappreciated - but you see so clearly here that his teammates know how important he has been to their magnificent season.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 May 2005 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite... like Chelsea.

(This thread should be revived often so we can read about the imminent surplusness of Lampard)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 7 May 2005 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

If Lampard had carried on playing like he did in 2002-03, he'd been lining up for Middlesbrough now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 7 May 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

And Eidur Gudjohnsen! Still Chelsea's best striker despite all that money.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 7 May 2005 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

which is why I expect big spending on some great striker this summer, someone that you know will get 25 goals next season. Probably a full-back too. If they're set on their sort of 4-3-2-1 formation, Makalele and Lampard are hard to beat, but one more great midfielder there (Gerrard would fit well, I think) would help.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 May 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Read an interview with Fernando Hierro a few days ago in which he said that every single Real Madrid player of a few seasons ago recognised that Makalele was the best player in the team, and the only one they couldn't do without. I assume the same thing has happened at Chelsea, hence the gift of a first and final goal today.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 7 May 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely - Real were insane to let him go. The great teams in this country for many years have ALWAYS had someone of the highest possible class in that role, most obviously Keane and Viera before Makalele.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 May 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the highlight of the post-match celebrations was robert huth stealing the groundsman's tractor-trailer and swerving round the pitch in it while tiago and forsell hung on for dear life.

Pete W (peterw), Saturday, 7 May 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

makelele is tremendous, but is he actually underappreciated? i've heard him called an "unsung hero" so frequently in recent weeks that he must be approaching "sung" status.

i was delighted to see him score though. i think his best asset is his positional sense - he always seems to be sitting in the perfect spot in front of the defence to make an interception or close down an oncoming attack. it can be awe-inspiring to see that sort of footballing intelligence at work, though i guess it's not as aesthetically pleasing as other football skills.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 7 May 2005 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

He's also the best I think I've seen at being available when a teammate needs someone to pass to. I know there have been a good number of people saying it lately, but he wasn't in contention for player of the year awards, he's not getting in anyone's team of the year on that nearby thread - I think nearly everyone still undervalues players of his kind.

Sorry. That was a mistake. The Chelsea squad is not a rich man's sticker album.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

xpost: CHICAGO, IL (April 20, 2006)...Chelsea, currently atop the Barclays Premiership and nine points ahead of Manchester United, is poised to win its second straight Premier League title and has consistently ranked among the world’s top clubs in recent years. The London-based club is one point away from becoming only the second club to win back-to-back titles.

Eh? So football began in 1992 with the Premiership, presumably.

Erm... Alba - either you or me are on the wrong thread.

Dear Chelsea fans,

When Roman A withdraws support from Chelsea in a few years time and demands his £850 million loan back within eighteen months, what are you going to call the team formed from the club's ashes that'll have to start in Combined Counties League? Chelsea Blues 1905 FC?

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

I recall Chelsea beating someone 5-1 away that season (Bolton?) from 1-0 down at half-time; Mourinho just shifted things around.
