Is there a reason why ILE hasn't had a thread about the marine and the twelve year old?

Actually there isn't even a catagory where this would fit- there not being a news catagory. So I put it under Asshats.

Is it that this being an interweb atrocity that its all a bit close to home for ILE. How many of us are twelve year olds?

Is it that nothing has actually happened beyond the running away of this girl and much like the girl who kipped under the table last week the tabloids are circling, making judgements before the fact (cf the Sun's PERVERT MARINE headline).

Is it that this is an upshot of the anonymity and lying culture that the interweb thrives on, and part of us wonders what we would do in the situation.

Or is it something to do with the girl looking a bit like Ned Raggett?

You're HOW OLD?!!!

(Graham and Millar's secret love, surely?)

What's the girl under table story?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ned raggett and russell crowe. a frightening combination.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

no disrespect to ned but 12 year olds are rarely so ugly. i forgive the marine. kinda

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what exactly is there to be said about this pete?

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the internet is eeevvill.

last night I saw a headline in the evening low standard that read "woman dies after internet love tryst"

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What did she die of? Was it anything to do with said geek rumpy-pumpy?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i think internet evildoers shd be punished by being forced to watch nothing but tv "specials" on the evils/dangers of the internet

ps i am grooming chip morningstar

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

She died because of THE INTERNET, Matt. Can't you read?

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I have no idea, I couldn't be bothered to crane my neck any further

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, the INTERNET!!! You can die of it? Is it contagious?

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The child under the table was the hippy girl Summer who was "adbucted" in SUssex, cause APB's and big media furore turning out to be having a kip next door exacerbated by twelve year old fantasist. This was equally tied with ridiculous Sun headlines "Summer abducted from own doorstep" and the not really contrite "Summer Safe And Sound".

There seems to be a lot more to this story than the glossing of paedophile marine abducts girl. Firstly to what extent has she been abducted? To what extent are her lies (ie pretending to be 19) responsible. To what extent are his lies responsible. And what to do now. After all they have both rung in to say they are safe. It is clear that she sould not be with him, but she's in BIG trouble (important to a twelve year old) and he's in BIGGER trouble. But what crime has been committed? Kidnapping?

Interweb business aside, does anyone else think the tabloids seem desperate for this years outrage? And so far we haven't really had one.

Flipping randomly between channels last night, I saw this earnest looking woman imitating the AOL ad background thing, talking about how you should NEVER MEET ANYONE FROM THE INTERNET, EVER!!! And thought about how dull FAPs would be if this were the case.

Is it me, or have we had a rash of new stories about DISAPPEARING YOUNGSTERS who turn up safe and sound a few days later. Like those two Asian girls who went on An Adventure and went and spent the night in a hotel cause they were angry at their parents.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd forgot about them (of course being Asian they weren't sexy enough for the Sun) but yeah, this rash of safe and sounds has been heart warming almost. (Oh No here comes the STORM).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

since 12-yr-olds can read also (some of them), "vanishing for a coupla days" = terrifically more effective way of SCARING YR PARENTS SILLY for imagined infraction than "i'll hold my breath till i die"

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

ANd you get famous on that thar interweb too.

(First things she does when she gets back home will be google herself do you think?)

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe there was so much goddam shit about this non-story on the news last night. I liked the video of the cop driving over the guy's leg better. He actually said "You want us to call you an ambulance? OK you're an ambulance!"

dave q, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, the 12-yr-olds family, trash or what? Never thought you'd see teeth as bad as that on Americans. As for the chick's brother, I haven't seen hair like that since...oh probably my 1991 Canadian passport photo

dave q, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched some of the BBC3 7pm news last night (I am probably the only person who has ever seen it) and their roving reporter was at Liverpool John Inman Airport saying "ooh apparently there was an S. Pennington on a flight from Paris to here but everybody says that it wasn't her". So why were you stood there then? You yutz.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry meant 'the Marine's family' of course. As for the chick's I can only imagine, they're probably too busy eating chips to notice she's left! heh

dave q, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The television news coverage is very odd in Michigan, since the Marine is from here. It has been very slanted towards the Marine and his family, portraying the 12 year old as an evil hussy who cruelly tricked the Marine! I've never even heard of the town he's from, I'm guessing it is the boonies (rural Michigan).

Larcole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It took a little time to establish that the S. Pennington on the flight from Paris wasn't the missing girl and it got me thinking what I'd do if I had been the other S. Pennington and I'd heard the story - would I have contacted the police to say "That wasn't her on that flight, it was me" or would I have done nothing and just regarded it as someone else's problem.

And thought about how dull FAPs would be if this were the case

we'd all be DRINKING IN OUR BEDROOMS!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Liverpool John Inman Airport

...has made my day

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 17 July 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)
