For me it was a copy of the Beano in about 1981, bought for me by my uncle.

Mine was The Beano, too. My grandmother used to buy it for me every week.

Mad Magazine

the first "real" comic I read was the first 5 issues of "The Punisher"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The first comic I can really remember being wowed-out by was a b+w UK Marvel reprint of 'The Avengers' #4. My Dad bought it for me on his way home from work one evening - the poor old sod didn't know what he was encouraging (I've never seen him so horrified as when he clocked the glass cabinet display case of bongs on the ground floor of 'Dark They Were and Golden Eyed', fabled London SF bk/comic shop, run by a bunch of Fat Freddys, that he took me to when I was eleven or so)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Beano too! My cousin came over and she had a copy. Then I read all the asterix books. they taught me to read.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I first read a friend's X-Men, during one of those tortuous plots where Magneto was going bonkers and sucked out all of Logan's adamantium through the latter's pores.

First one I ever bought was Sin City. I heard there were naked gurls in it.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Archie and Richie Rich when I was little; they were special treats for me keeping quiet in the backseat during long trips. So I only got comic books once a year.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I was reading anything put in front of me at the age of two, I am told, and was certainly reading some toddlers' comics back then, and that is before I can remember. As for US stuff, I guess it was whenever Marvel stuff was first reprinted in the UK sometime in the '60s. I loved the early Avengers and FF particularly.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

probably Beano as well, or some Disney comic with Goofy and co. in it - i'm pretty sure Transformers wasn't too far behind tho

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

an early avengers and x-men crossover

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The first comic book I remember reading is an early Marvel Team-Up in which Spidey helps the Invisible Girl rescue Franklin from kidnappers. I would've been 5 ... I keep thinking that, logically, I must've read one of the Harvey or Disney comics before then, but I don't remember doing so until I was older. (Speaking of the latter, anyone know if the new reprints -- Gemstone, I think -- are worth getting? I was thinking of subscribing.)

I'd read comic strips before that, though, and I remember being determined to learn about politics and current events -- I remember riding around on my Big Wheel, listening to stuff about the hostage crisis on the radio -- so that I would understand Doonesbury. When I was four and five, understanding Doonesbury seemed incredibly important.

Wow, was I a geek.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

was? ;-)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

... okay, but a different kind of geek!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

plasticman & mad magazine (skipping ahead to spy vs spy)

plasticman & mad magazine (startng each by skipping ahead to spy vs spy)

kephm, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

my first real comic wasn't even a comic. I bought an issue of Who's Who, DC's index of superheroes at a grocery store as a kid, cuz I figured I'd get the most for my dollar. I really wanted more inspiration for my own stories rather than part of a continuing one anyhow, and Who's Who delivered.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Archies" and "Archie and Jughead" when I was 6. (Never denied my geekiness;>)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, my first comic might have been the Spider-Man strips that were included in the Electric Company magazine. (Remember the show, when Spidey would talk and word balloons would come out? That rocked. When Noggin premiered, it showed a bunch of Electric Company episodes, and now that I get the channel, they don't show them. They earn my wrath.)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 July 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Spiderman! (mp3)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 July 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaaah, I have no soundcard at the moment. Is it the Electric Company Spidey music? I'll download it and listen to it when then becomes now.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 July 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it is! god it's all coming back! The Short Circus, Easy Reader, LETTER MAN!! "so, Letter Man, pulling a letter from his varsity sweater, turned BAT into BAIT...."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 July 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Letter Man was wicked. Textual manipulation as superpower! I so wanted that. Without the sweater, though.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 July 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(Minor tangent: found out the other day the girlfriend had no idea what either The Electric Company or Romper Room were; had pang of generation gap; ceased attempting to explain when she asked "Was Do-Bee a pot reference?")

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 July 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

tintin or asterix and obelix

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 17 July 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

First I read was the Beano probably, I was allowed one comic a week and that was my choice. Then I switched to JACKPOT! when it launched cos it was a first issue. The thing I remember best from that was a strip called the TERROR TOYS, about a toymaker who made toy soldiers come to life and attack kids (why? no idea). There was a really scary episode where some kid was playing battleships in the bath and they started shelling him!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

probably beezer annuals. my gran kept (i assume) my uncles' old beezer (and other) annuals (including a Dalek one). I don't think I understood a single joke. When you are 7 in the 1970s reading puns based on minor celebs from the 1960s is a bit of a tough nut to crack. After that I would buy stuff like Buster (and Monster Fun) and Cor!! summer specials. Krazy Komic was the first regular "proper" kids comic I can remember spending pocket money on every week. I didn't start on 2000AD til about 1981/2 - just before whenever the bloody apocalypse war started.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

First 2000AD I read had Judge Dredd fighting a highwayman, didnt start buying it regularly until 85 or so (just before it got rubbish) - Anderson fighting the Dark Judges on the cover.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

kephm are you *me*? cuz i had the EXACT SAME ANSWER

dave q, Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Next FT flyer, methinks.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes - following the current flyer star, you will really have cornered that elusive 70s comix&sci fi geeks/chartpop crossover niche!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Well we don't want the real actual kids harshing our buzz!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd think i feel no shame, but actually i feel swamped in the bleddy stuff. Tico you are a bad mang, stop encouraging me.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, someone else remembers Jackpot! I used to get this too though remember precious little about it and no one else has ever known it when i've mentioned it. I think it eventually amalgamated with Whizzer and Chips or something.

My dad also used to buy Star Wars comic for me, I think after the first film came out, though maybe it was after Empire.

mms (mms), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Archie or Mad magazine, I started reading both probably around the same time so I don't remember which came first.

Larcole (Nicole), Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

first dc comic i ever read (skipping over all the beano, dandy, krazy, 2000ad stuff) was swamp thing 46. slap bang in the middle of the 'american gothic' run and a 'crisis crossover' issue, so it didn't make a lot of sense. sister mary got off her tube train at mornington crescent and couldn't get out so the invulche got her.

(was at least 8 more years until mornington crescent reopened).

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It got absorbed by Buster mms. I was bitter about this because Buster was what my little brother read. I think I'd stopped buying it by then but even so.

My first American comics were sent over by my cousins in the US, they were all Marvels from the month when all the heroes got nicked by the Beyonder to fight in the Secret Wars, so they all ended on the same cliffhanger (hero disappears oh no!). Bit of a swindle really.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

didnt start buying 2000AD til 1989 or 1990 (just as 'Necropolis' - at that point the longest Judge Dredd story ever i think got under way)...actually this could've been '91 (it was Prog 673 or thereabouts).

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

First superhero comic I read was a copy of Fantastic Four. The FF had She-Hulk in the team to replace the Thing at that point.
