Best place for spotting fantastic '60s non-hippie fashion = the audience shots in the Monterey Pop documentary. It's really odd cuz it's the height of the Summer of Love, right near San Fran, yet NO ONE is wearing annoying flowers or any of that bullshit. The crowd looks like the LES here in NYC!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that's much better! :P

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck off! Seriously, I would've fucked everyone at that show aside from David Crosby and Mama Cass.

My parents were married in 1965.

They had the coolest wedding clothing ever.

What's especially interesting is the fact that my maternal grandmother sewed every single piece of clothing together. Including this incredibly intricate, very beautiful beaded wedding gown.

Wow.

(In the Mood for Love is more '00s nostalgia for the '40s and '50s seen through the prism of the '60s.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(Gives sad puppy dog look.)

That wasn't a challenge, Mary. I was wondering what in the film suggested a nostalgia for the '40s and '50s? I don't know anything about that period in H.K. history, aside from their being a lot of new refugees from the revolution.

I want a mod suit, but I have no idea where to start looking.

Ok, so you probably can't afford one, but Gucci is currently making some way-hot suits, trim and tight, narrow lapels and thin trousers like they made in the mid-60s. If you're tall and thin this look is fantastic. I'm thinking about getting a custom tailor in Chinatown to make me one; I'm sure it would cost a third of what it would at Gucci. Anyway, comb the thrift stores, and if you find one that fits you in the shoulders you can have the rest fitted (probably).

Sean (Sean), Friday, 18 July 2003 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh, Penelope Tree -- when I first saw a picture of her recently I was downright DISTURBED. Frightening face.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why she's cool! She just has such an odd look.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 18 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But it's like someone fetishing a Close Encounter of the Third Kind alien, putting her in outfits like that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 July 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly. Robots and aliens = k-rowr.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 18 July 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)
