Martel Place E8 was altered (with paint) to 'Cartel Place' perhaps in the late '80s or early '90s (a reference to it leading into the Dalston Cross shopping centre). I noticed the other day that it has now been further defaced so it reads 'Art Place'.

We used to live near Falkland Road and some wit changed it to Malvinas Road.

Obviously, the last four letters of the first word are regularly obliterated from Penistone Road in Streatham, near my dad's house.

in Conisbrough, which is between Doncaster and Rotherham, there is a road called Butt Hole Road. This is actually what it's called as well - no defacement necessary.

I liked the old signs at Addiscombe tram stop, where some of the letters had been peeled off so it read "disco"

Disco trams!

I thought this was going to be another thread about Bill Drummond's latest project.

when I was a kid and there was still such a thing as Saturday Morning Cinema, a Children's Film Foundation film was being shot in my road. Prior to filming, some blokes turned up and picked up all the litter and pulled up some weeds. They also painted out the T which somebody had added to the roadsign, Petersfield Close, to change it into Petersfield Closet.

not a street name sign, but. at a crossroads on the back roads of the village I am from there is a STOP sign and someone wrote 'WANKING' along the bottom of it. hahahaha.

The adbuster crowd in Halifax started putting stickers with "eating animals", "driving cars" and other such wooly sweater issues below Stop on the stop signs near Dal.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I live on Lathom Road. Someone has added lines to the first letter to make it E, and inserted an O, so it now reads EATHOMO ROAD.

A couple years back someone had made a simple-yet-effective alteration to a street sign on US 27 S. going through Tennessee, and thus after driving past a sign that said...

SPEED LIMIT
175 MPH

Then there was another one, an addition to a sign on I-75 S. (again, in Tennessee) that went...

DANGER!
FALLING BOULDERS!
CROSSING!!!

I guess that one shouldn't have seemed so funny, but I was laughing all the way to North Carolina.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a friend who used to live on hiscock road. no, really. and of course the street sign's in all caps: HISCOCK. this is in ann arbor, michigan.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha, I saw that "it's the Claw" sign a couple of weeks ago and was practically falling out of the car laughing.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

some guy I know changes all the "arret" signs to "art"

also old pre-bill 101 stop signs that still read "stop" have mostly been painted with red spraypaint so they just read "101"

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 19 July 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The classic example from around here -- "DO NOT PASS" changed to "DO NO ASS." I imagine a bunch of 12-year-old skatepunks forming a band or hip-hop crew standing below that and making goony faces.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 July 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was in New York some hilarious smartalecks had ripped the P off of a bunch of "PAINT WET" signs.

Later I wondered why the signs didn't read "WET PAINT."

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 20 July 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The adbuster crowd in Halifax started putting stickers with "eating animals", "driving cars" and other such wooly sweater issues below Stop on the stop signs near Dal.

Years and years ago, when I was maybe five or so, I started seeing those "eating animals" stickers being plastered below "Stop" on the stop signs in my neighborhood. They've of course gone since then, but now some morons in the neighborhood gangs have decided to use those stop signs as Tagging Central. Fucking idiots.

It's not that clear, but it says "no having it off on the beach"

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

That's great, but it would be better without the exclamation mark.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 20 July 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

There's an electric SELF STORAGE sign on a building along the Pasadena fwy that now reads ELF ORAGE due to lights going out, and I'm hoping the O goes before they fix anything so it will read "ELF RAGE"

nickn (nickn), Monday, 21 July 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

orage means storm in french so that's funny too

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 21 July 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 July 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)
