The idea of using Google to power the search function is interesting. It's certainly faster. But is it better? I can't fins shit that I'm looking for.

check out Heavens! ILX is slow and frustrating ;)
Which may allude to why.

the full search machinery has been put on hold temporarily while admin research a way to stop it slowing down the whole site

mark s (mark s), Friday, 18 July 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

if you search for cockfarmer you only get seven hits. that is no good.

I liked the way in the old search thing you could easily only search thread titles.

[later - oh, this is a temporary expedient. oh, I see]

Can't Google include individual messages/threads, too? Is there something funny in the ILX board setup that makes that impossibe?

If it could do that, Google-search would be an improvement over the old search function, with the whole search for phrases and exclusions stuff.

Google doesn't index the whole web, contrary to popular belief (unless you pay them). It indexed a lot more before the move to ilxor.com 'cause it was luvved up with Phil Greenspun.

Try www.alltheweb.com, which picks up a lot more threads under "Rockist Scientist" (my favorite search) than Google does. I haven't tried "cockfarmer."

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 July 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

And incidentally, I'm a Google man all the way. AlltheWeb.com just happens to be better for covering this board (and possibly others).

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 July 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cockfarmer" Search

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 July 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist speaks the truth. Remember also that if you go to advanced search on alltheweb.com, and put ilx.wh3rd.net in the Domain Filters box, you can restrict your search to these boards.

And Ned didn't believe me when I told him that google isn't good for every search. Ha!

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 18 July 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Rockist Scientist, thanks for the tip. It's great!

just saying the old/original search feature was one of the best things about ILx, & um, I'm willing to put up w/slow ILx in exchange for ILx being a huge database of everything.

And Ned didn't believe me when I told him that google isn't good for every search. Ha!

Hey, you're mean.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 July 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This new search function capability sucks gigantic boulders.

I want the old functions back, damn it.

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 21 July 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I want doesn't get.

ILE is not an encyclopedia. Its a living breathing compost heap of truths, half-truths and lies. You cannae index that.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 21 July 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Any tips for searching, I cannot find anything!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 21 July 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, use the alltheweb one rather than google (which is fairly useless with ILE). But even alltheweb is missing loads.

Don't forget the lists of categorised and uncategorised threads. If you can remember part of the title, load up the relevant list and do a CTRL+F find search on it.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 21 July 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

cheers N.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 21 July 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss the old search feature, but I know I never deserved it anyway - it was too... too... PERFECT!!! (*cries and runs to hide*)
