Courriel! It sounds like a brand of shampoo!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Quebec has been doing this for years. Hell they won't even call things "Birdies" or "Eagles" in golf.
How to get fined for your illegal business cards in Quebec.

Yeah! I've already integrated it into conversation at work with the only other person still here.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

They've changed their mind - before it was supposed to be un message electronique, or 'un mel' for short.

And several years ago they tried to make the WWW 'la toile de l'araignée' or 'la toile' too.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 19 July 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That's funny, I had been using "courriel" more often as I had always thought it was the preferred term, but I hear "e-mail" as well. It sounds better, indeed.
There is a lot of super cool slang & neat phonetic spelling variations of francais that I see online (prob derived from text-messaging I suppose). I'm a fan, I'll sometimes hang out and read the french hip-hop chat on Slsk, and I have to actually speak some of the phrases aloud to comprehend - and it seems, to me, more forceful and stylized even though it's the same word, such as "C koi?" instead of "C'est quoi?"

daria g (daria g), Saturday, 19 July 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Courriel is a prettier word than e-mail. I have resolved to use it.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 20 July 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

it's certainly ridiculous, but it's above all unpronounceable (maybe you don't know it, but to join the académie française, you have to be senile)
