I don't know if he's a good guy or not, but I admire him for doing things his own way and not playing ball with the system. It's not exactly the French Revolution, but good on him.
As for book signings, the idea is that your book will be worth more if the author has signed it or drawn pictures on it. But that would be wasted on me because I always mutilate the books I read, usually by biting bits out of the pages and chewing them.
