Muttered this on Facebook the other day but when I was actively interested in golf as a kid, my parents got me a how-to-play book he had authored -- good book, learned a lot -- and so I followed him on TV when the opportunity arose. Hands down the most amazing sports memory I had as a preteen.

Tigers face while he was being driven away from the course was an absolute picture. looked more like he'd been in the trenches.

What I saw of McIlroy's round was amazing - he was toddling along at -1 after 8 holes having missed a couple of chances then eagled the 9th and totally destroyed the back nine. He equalled the lowest ever Open (or any major?) round but should maybe have beaten it as he missed one you'd expect him to get on the 17th.

John Daly off to a good start - I fully expect him to blow up and hit a 9 somewhere tomorrow.

Woods on six under. This one will be interesting because given the past couple of majors he's had one great round and one awful to negate it and has ended up top 5. At St Andrews I'd expect him to have a bad round but he may not drop that many shots, its just the question as to whether he can somehow come back from 5th place on the last day to win.

I think it's been set up to be attacked plus the weather's very settled. They'll tighten the pins over the weekend.

just saw the full ballesteros thing today, so sad but what a brilliant man. the part where he says something about how he feels it's destiny that he has to fight serious illness because "i had so many glorious days in the past" actually almost made me want to cry in work.

yeah really tedious stuff, not just today either, it's all been a little flat. the only plus side of it being so shit is it's sunny in london and i can go for a beer without missing anything good. but yeah louis has been awesome, that's a massive score in an open so he really has played well.

It would have been an exciting tournament if Oosthuizen hadn't played so damn well. Wind messing with players' heads, McIlroy hitting highs and lows, a bunch of guys competing for second. I think it's just an incredible performance that's killed the competition dead.

In the end I missed it - such a nice day out, went for a stroll in the park.

But so did Loius! Such a composed performance. Saw the interview in the highlights package (great closing package, what was the tune?) and he noted that he wanted to miss all bunkers but did end up going in one on the 14th!

Yes, not much excitement this year but ... winning the Open by 7 strokes, they could have played another 4 rounds and still not have caught him. On Mandela's birthday too! And he mentioned it in his winners speech.
