i think it's kinda classic...assuming that you're breaking up for something abstract like 'we've grown apart' rather than 'you're a cheating bastard.'

no need to reward cheating bastards.

it can be fun. you know each other, safer than pulling someone at a club, etc. as long as it doesn't just stir things up again.

it's a dud if one person knows it's breakup sex, and the other person doesn't know until after it's over that that's what it was.

Two experiences with this. One was fine, 'cuz she was leaving town for good the next day. It was sweet, actually, and helped (a little) with the overall pain of the rending-asunder. The other was, well, the sex was good, but since she didn't leave town for another 6-7 months, it created some awkwardnesses that would have been better left uncreated.

Anyway, the obvious lesson is that all ex-es should leave town immediately.
