stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha where did you find that pic of N. at age 5?

Aha Dirty Pair was one of my favorites for ages cos some boys decided it was about me and my friend (I had bright red hair then).

I want to see Spirited Away...how is Metropolis or Princess Mononoke?

Now and forever more, my favourite anime, LUM:

Rumiko Takahashi is the Queen of Manga!

The series itself makes like no sense at all but it's really beautiful to look at.

Manga video=was it based on a comic?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Anime hentai is lame because they never have the budget to do decent animantion. Or so I'm told.

Manga Video = major US anime releaser. Its just a name.

for those who are not interested in it's violence but in it's neat futurist ideas, like robo-butts, mind uploading etc

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

robo-butts

... nothing says the future like delegating crap to a machine.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Metropolis is... likeable; it's got a very children's-book style of animation, and the story's really well done.

I don't think Mononoke is as great as it's been hyped up to be, but then I've never really been much of one for Ghibli anime. It's good, but not exactly the saviour of animation.

Don't know if Cowboy Bebop: The Movie has been released (it was shown at the ICA London recently, which implies there's an official version available), but that is just fantastic.

cis (cis), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Certainly if it's a choice between Mononoke and Spirited Away, go for the latter.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the DVD for Cowboy Bebop: The Movie on Amazon! I was psyched as anything for that, I need need need.

Lain is good (also God). Did anyone else see the Blood: the last vampire movie that kephm posted a picture from? It's like a half-hour long and it just like ends right in the middle! it would be a great first episode of a series, but as a movie it makes no sense at all. so frustrating

i still have to see the coboy bebop movie.
cowboy bebop, the first series out on dvd also!

Did anyone else see the Blood: the last vampire movie that kephm posted a picture from? It's like a half-hour long and it just like ends right in the middle!

Yes, it's kind of frustrating. I'm not sure if the filmakers ran out of funding in the middle of it or what, but that's what is seemed like.

I thought the Cowboy Bebop movie was pretty good, though the villain seemed kind of lame to me.

Gundam (the original series and the follow-ups set in the same universe, none of that Wing shit)
Macross (not plus)
Akira
Wings Of Honneamise
Lupin III
Golgo 13 - classic hitman sleaze
Ranma 1/2 was pretty funny as I recall

Lensman and Robot Carnival impressed me but they don't exist on DVD. Fuck you MGM.

Also Manga = comics. Printed on paper.

Anime = Japanese cognate for animation. Hence things appearing to move thanks to the magic of film.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar, why not Macross Plus? Macross 2's complete bollocks, as I recall, but Plus r0xx0rz. Sharon Apple! The flight sequences. It has a Yoko Kanno soundtrack == it can do no wrong, in my book.

And while I'm thinking of flight anime, Wings of Honneamise is incredible - massively slow, and gradual, and quiet, a slightly older style of animation and a tad too long, but it's fantastic to just get caught up in this subtle little story.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe I was thinking of Macross 2 instead of Plus. I don't own them so it's quite possible I got confused. One of them sucks horribly, that much I recall.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Macross 2 features Evil Alien Overlords speaking backwards Japanese and using girl singers as a highly advanced weapon in space-based combat. Then there's an inter-species romance in which the alien girl just! wants! to! sing! but in order to spread love and peace rather than pain and suffering. Or something. I think I only watched it to the end because I was too tired to reach for the remote and turn the telly off.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Macross 2 is indeed to suX0r one. Macross Plus is the best one, probably the only one I would even recommend watching, unless they have made a new one I haven't heard about. In Macross Plus, there is a hidden easter egg - for a few frames there is shown an advertisement for "Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 37" (it being the year 2023 or soemthing like that). I like that one Sharon Apple song with the french lyrics, and the Sharon Apple concert scene was awesome - concerts in the future should be just like that.

fletrejet, Thursday, 24 July 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, since people are playing this game:
manga entertainment!!!! is a distributor of anime. d-i-s-t-r-i-b-u-t-o-r
or "Manga Video = major US anime releaser"
It is a good place to start.
I suggest looking for the little black, red &white seal on dvd covers.

For example:
ninja scroll, akira, perfect blue, ghost in the shell*, dominion tank police, and so on & so forth all released!!! By manga entertainment.

Also manga entertainment: not to be confused with manga films , the spanish film company.

**if you like the matrix this is what inspired the movie. It was the ~only~influence according to the W’ brothers

KO Century Beast (Warriors) is a good one.

Samurai Champloo - supercool hip-hop samurais on a quest in ancient Japan

AJD, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

yeh that's a good one, made by the same guy behind Cowboy Bebop.
would also suggest Kino's Journey, excellent series about a traveler and a talking motorbike visiting fantastical countries - episodic, like an early 80s Ghibli version of Gullivers Travels.

zappi, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

It's not exactly "funny" but I've been trying to get people to see Kaiba, this amazing show from the guy who directed Mind Game:

It has this great superflat Astro Boy look and some great WTFery.

muus lääv? :D muus dut :( (Telephone thing), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

looks interesting. is it tweeish sci-fi? Japanese are awesome at making tweeish sci-fi, was going to make a thread about that at one point (love YKK, Aqua, Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Planetes etc)

zappi, Monday, 16 May 2011 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

Ditto on Champloo. It's got a cool hip-hop soundtrack (think MF Doom's "Special Herbs" series) that suits it fairly well. The overall arc is total garbage, tho. It's more Firefly-esque in that "enjoy it an episode at a time" vibe.

Stay Puft Daddy (kelpolaris), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

by garbage, I mean it's about a girl's quest to find a samurai "that smells like sunflower seeds" and 2 dudes tagging along with her for little, little reason. Their adventures along the way are fun - but then they finally meet this samurai and "the big reveal" as to his relevance isn't all too gratifying.

Stay Puft Daddy (kelpolaris), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

but in a lot of ways this was my qualm with Cowboy Bebop - so if you enjoyed that, expect almost exactly the same feeling in quality. A lot of plots are actually just transfers of ones Bebop did.

Stay Puft Daddy (kelpolaris), Monday, 16 May 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

xpost It kind of is, yeah- tone-wise it's pretty close to Kino's Journey, though a lot more visually inventive (not a knock on Kino, but praise for Kaiba). There's definitely a bit of Cat Soup in there too.

I just started following two series that are on Adult Swim's Saturday night Toonami block; Deadman Wonderland (a kid survives the murder of his entire junior high class only to be convicted of their deaths and thrown into a maximum security prison/amusement park where the inmates are treated like "Running Man" entertainment fodder) and Casshern Sins (a killer android with no memory is wandering a ruined Earth populated with rusting robots who want to eat him so they can stay alive, and somehow all of the destruction he's seeing is his fault). CS is diverting enough but DW is fucking insane and great.

for the last few years the Japanese govt has run an initiative to help fund the training of young animators via series of short films.
one of the short films made this year is Little Witch Academia and has already become a breakout hit - beautifully animated, has the feel of an old school 50s Disney film. The production company just put an official English subbed version on their Youtube. If you have any interest in anime or just animation in general you should watch it now!
