why is my cat so fascinated with my bathroom habits?

She used to stand on the rim while I peed and stare into the bowl, rapt. Now she's too big for that, so she sits at my feet while I do the sitting-down thing, and then when I flush, jumps up onto the rim and stares into the bowl, rapt. Oh, and if I don't let her into the bathroom, she cries like she's been wounded. Is this a known cat thing?

my cat Juan Epstein does that too. I think it's all about water. fill the bowl, dammit!

Neudonym, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

introduce her to tea ... cats like tea, you know. we even had a thread all about that!

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

She won't drink out of anything she's encouraged to drink out of. Only toilets and glasses of water you leave lying around. Except those, she must tip over before she drinks. And then only if you're in the room. She never tips water over unless you're around to yell at her. I'm befuddled.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's because she can't operate the remote control for the TV; she's got to entertain herself somehow.

More seriously, I've known a number of cats who are fascinated with running water. Leave the tap running a little bit, and see if she gets into that.

Your cat is a stone cold diva drama queen alpha bitch. I think I have a crush on her.

Neudonym, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe she's pissed because she has a boy's name - "Dobbler." A tribute to Lloyd Dobbler. Except she turned out to be a girl. I kept telling everyone she was a girl, but no one believed me. "Then what are those?" they'd argue. "Tufts of hair," I'd answer. And so they were.

If we'd gone with the name I wanted, "Quizno," none of this would have been a problem.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You don't want 'no' to be part of your pet's name.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I also liked "Huxtable" a lot.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Z's, x's and q's are pet name gold.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

then you'd have to dress him/her up in crazy-patterned sweaters

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

did you change its name half-way through its life?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope - it's been his name since he was a little furball

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Cats seem especially fascinated after you've just bathed, no? "Wow, wow, pet me now, clean humid person! I am so impressed with the way you brush your hair!! Don't get me started about the teeth!!!"

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat is 19 years old and fascinated with very little anymore apart from watching things move.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

My cats are so old and fat they don't give a shit about anything anymore than eating. When they were younger they dug the toilet. Cats are like lil' Chuck Berrys, no?

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The best name for a kitten is Kaboodle. A good one for a full grown cat owned by a football fan is Enaccio.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

my cats name is Fritz. He likes lederhosen.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat's name is Dandy. And she still digs watching the toilet water go down the pipe, although not as much as when she was a kitten. Now her big thrill is sitting in the tub after someone's taken a shower, especially if there's a slight drip in the faucet.

It's all hella adorable.

(Oh, also back in the day when the litter box was in the bathroom, she seemed to like to wait so we could go at the same time. That was weird.)

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

fritz does nothing remotely interesting, he is a bit of a bastard too. i guess thats what you get for being german and all.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat is named Pablo (he was named after Pablo Honey by the weird Radiohead loving neighbor we adopted him from). He is fascinated by any sort of running water, either coming out of a faucet or from the shower, etc. I think running water must be a pretty common cat obsession.

Larcole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

fritz also dislikes every human being he comes into contact with.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat Ike,used to do the same thing. But, ever since I moved into my new place he's become more of a copycat. Anytime I use the bathroom, he gets into his box and scratches around until I'm done.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The running water thing is a survival trait: in nature, stagnant water is likelier than flowing to be contaminated.

As for cat names, my sister has found herself with a cat named Mandu.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 24 July 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep. My cats get in the sink (uh, not together) and meow for me to turn on the tap so they can play in it. Pepper sits on the ledge of the bath when I take a shower and faces away from it as she puts her tail in. She also does this when I take a bath. So I'm always bathing with her tail. Both kitties like to rub up against my legs when I get out of the shower which is icky because their kitty hairs get on me when I'm still wet.
