best places on the kent coast?

and where to see oast houses?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 25 July 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Whistable and Tankerton on the coast. Margate and Broadstairs scare me.

There are lots of nice oast houses in the countryside around Canterbury, and even a few in Medway. Get a national express out into Kent.

there is a converted oast house as near to London as Swanscombe, my old haunt. or at least there was when I left in 1994 (please god let it still be there)

Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch. Dungeness if you like sand dunes. Lympne Castle near Hythe - I went to a wedding there once.

As for the oast houses....aren't they all inland?

Avoid Folkestone as it seems to be owned by Saga.

Have you thought about maybe buying a Rough Guide to England or something?

Though there was actually a thread fairly recently about good places to go for a weekend from London which covered a lot of Kent. And seaside towns and the like.

Where was it?

Yes, I should have a Rough Guide to England. It never occurred to me that that might be something I needed before! ALso I like to hear the opinions of ILXors.

I once spent a weekend in Whitstable in a tiny cottage on the beach doing some freelance video editing. it seemed moody, which I like.

I can't remember what it was called, but it was a bloke who was going on a stag do looking for a place within a day's drive of London, by the seaside. I'll try and look.

I'm a big fan of Broadstairs personally.

Sorry, had to bump it to get the proper URL.

Good places in England to go for a weekend, near the sea

"Kent, sir - everybody knows Kent - apples, cherries, hops and women."

An extremely various county, from the Medway to the High Weald and the Romney Marshes. Downland, greensand and weald. Plenty of oast houses and indeed hop gardens still tucked away in west Kent as well. Woodcutter friend of mine used to cut and fashion hop poles round there.

I am working there, for now.

Gamaliel do you know Baggins 2nd hand books? I pass it everyday on the train.

five years pass...

First two weeks of living in Kent have gone pretty well.

May attempt a long coastal walk at the weekend if the weather is looking civilised. Any particular recommendations on the North coast? Thinking Broadstairs to wherever is about 20km away from Broadstairs .

Elmley is a great idea. Looks like it's a pain to get to at the weekends due to rail replacement services but I'll try to go next time I have a day off. I'm only about half an hour away from Swale on the train.

have always fantasised about alighting at swale station

This is probably a slightly longer walk than you're intending but Broadstairs to Deal via Ramsgate and the Sandwich Bay Nature Reserve is fantastic. Good eating and drinking options in Deal at the end of it all as well.

Margate to Ramsgate going through Broadstairs and Botany Bay would be great as well.

I was wrong about Broadstairs upthread btw.
