Should people stop posting after one year

a serious question. would it be better if you stopped posting after a year. what are you getting here that you werent a year ago? are you saying pretty much the same thing as you were a year ago? why? perhaps you are saying it in a more interesting way? or are you merely repeating yourself? to what purpose?

or maybe you are more erudite and fascinating now? or are listening and learning things better? has ilx made a difference in the last year to you? if not, why not? will you persevere? or do something that will make more of a difference.

perhaps you are new, and are sick of seeing posts from people that read the same as posts from that person more than a year ago. what do you think?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it needs to be taken on a case by case basis. I think I am reaching my prime.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still too nervous/late to threads to really post properly (mostly) after um eight months or so, so no. Can I ask you something? Are you depressed/gloomy tonight?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If the powers that be are sick of me, they can go ahead and ban me. Go ahead.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

On ILM my tastes have changed and I'm wiser now but post less.

On ILE I long ago ran out of anything interesting to say about myself. I offer opinions on things and joke with friends.

I think it's only in the past year that ILX has started to really gel socially and I'd have been sad to miss that.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I think of it as a continuing cycle, not a progression. So no.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

''should''? ha!

if you get hooked you prob won't.

I repeat myself and who knows whether I'm more 'fascianting' or anything. bcz either way, that will not stop me posting.

ILE has made think more abt other things I never thought i would. but in the end the only difference it has made to my life is that the boring bits are reduced to a minimum.

ILM has been very helpful. My tastes haven't changed that much but it has made me work out certain things.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Archel. I mean, there are new posters coming and going all the time so ILX is constantly evolving. And I think it's cute when people repost old stories because that's what happens in real life too.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 25 July 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

> would it be better if you stopped posting after a year.

better how? it wouldn't make much difference to anyone else here if i stopped. it make actually make my life better in that i get more done, but ILX = prime source of joy in my life right now (!)

> what are you getting here that you werent a year ago?

abuse from gareth, thats it.

> are you saying pretty much the same thing as you were a year ago?

no i have got more wise to the etiquette of ILX so my posts now will be a bit different from what they were a year ago. i do have the same general mannerisms, nuances and style tho - as thats what makes me me, and while ILX does influence and modify that naturally, a year is not long enough for a change that vast to really take place.

> why? perhaps you are saying it in a more interesting way? or are you merely repeating yourself? to what purpose?
or maybe you are more erudite and fascinating now? or are listening and learning things better? has ilx made a difference in the last year to you? if not, why not?

pretty much answered above. could go into more detail but no real need/desire.

> will you persevere? or do something that will make more of a difference.

i will stay here til i get bored or too busy. neither is that likely at the mo...

> perhaps you are new, and are sick of seeing posts from people that read the same as posts from that person more than a year ago. what do you think?

i will be like this soon too - seeing people use the same jokes as me (not that i invented them), same approach, or different but better - but thats just a reflection on real life. when you're in the pub drinking with mates having a laugh - there's a guy somewhere else in the pub with his mates probably having a laugh about the exact same thing. no big deal.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

shd ppl stop going to school/college/the pub/jail/space/seed after [x] years?

mark s (mark s), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Generally people do stop going to school after 11-13 years Mark, unless they're Brandon Lee!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:jC-iKRUawksC:www.urbancinefile.com.au/res/images/l/logansrun_dvd_small.jpg

posting should be down to the individual there are enough restraints in life dont make ilx another one

james (james), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I stopped posting for a year and got accused of being dead for serious, never stop otherwise they send a search party. True.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I have stopped posting for months (though this was a long time ago) and I don't think anyone noticed. It depends on the person.

Larcole (Nicole), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

If I die, I'll be sure to tell Nick to start a thread called something like,
"SARAH MCLUSKY DIES, C/D???"
"Heavens! Sarah McLusky Died! ;)"
"MELODRAMATIC THREAD ALERT!"

And then people could post stuff like,
"Hey, that's too bad!"
"Ditto!"

Sarah MCLusky (coco), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually wondering how long it takes until anyone actually notices that I'm gone. But then again, I would. ;-)

kate (kate), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

tom you forgot teachers!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

and nelson muntz!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony resigned from ILE and no one cared except me.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I noticed the appalling lack of Kateness as soon as I logged on yesterday morning. I thought you'd gone on holiday already.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i did too...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 25 July 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never met any of you, I don't post very much, and I don't think that there will ever be an FAP within traveling distance of my locale. Still, I'd be damned busted if any of the ideas (the one-year ban, 100 posters only, ILX shutting down entirely) that I've read about this came to pass.

ILX has made a measurable impact on my life just because I read it. Admittedly, I don't get most of the in-jokes, but that's irrelevant. I've read some really touching things here, recieved some really good recommendations, and laughed out loud at some incredibly crass jokes. Recently, I've developed a fascination with certain dark metal bands I would never in a million years have listened to or even heard of because of a thread on ILM, I did a self psych-exam as a result of a thread on ILE, and I've read a bunch of books that no one in my RL social circle has even heard of because I read about them on these boards.

Ergo, the odor of doom around here today bums me out.

J (Jay), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The posters who have been around a while are a tremendous resource to the people who are relatively new. I think the new people get more out of ILX than they would if there were ILX 'term limits.' So I say hurrah for the pillars of ILX society!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

J (McChump), sorry to hear that. Tune in on monday, when the apocalypse has passed and we are rebuilt anew.

Alan (Alan), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, I figured this whole thing is mostly jokes and bored alarmist rhetoric built upon the basis of a legitimate concern--but you never can tell on the interweb.

Also, Teeny seconded.

J (Jay), Friday, 25 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth is off the money. The premise is a false and arbitrary one, to the extent I don't think it's worth discussing.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i also disagree with the premise in my question. but i was interested to see if anyone did agree with it

gareth (gareth), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's the deal, I'll still be posting at the end of time.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

even though i did give a serious ans do bear in mind that it is a gareth thread.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

People shouldn't stop posting after a year. They should only stop reading, and continue posting as if nothing has changed nor ever will -- just like in the real world, when you're hanging out with friends and keep asking them about how their Spanish class is going and who they're gonna take to prom, and they're all "dude, we graduated high school ten years ago," and you ignore them and carry on about how you're gonna score some major weed and Bartles & Jaymes for the next party down at the swimming hole.

People who acknowledge and live with change are sellouts.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 25 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the board really needs an enema today!

kephm, Friday, 25 July 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Lost it. No longer care about anything. Hibernating now.

dave q, Saturday, 26 July 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

not to stop, but change
to another persona:
hence my new format(t)

Haikunym, Saturday, 26 July 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Finitude can be valuable.

the pinefox, Saturday, 26 July 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX has made a measurable impact on my life just because I read it. I've read some really touching things here, recieved some really good recommendations, and laughed out loud at some incredibly crass jokes.

That's pretty much how I feel too.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Saturday, 26 July 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Kittens should be killed after a year.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Saturday, 26 July 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been here for about a year, but I haven't peaked yet. Nowhere near.

Watch out, y'all.

C J (C J), Saturday, 26 July 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

what if you don't post much? can you have an extended period of time corresponding to the frequency/number of posts?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Saturday, 26 July 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i hit my peak of ilx interest 12-15 months after discovering it. i'm moving back to lurker/occasional poster status more and more each day.

having said this, i'll probably be more upfor it again when college starts up (more time beside a computer, y'know)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 27 July 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

kilian is one of my favourite posters. i will be glad when college resumes

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 27 July 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i like kilian as he is one of the few people to recognise the genius of 'to lose la trek'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 27 July 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Killian because he has the same name as one of my best friends but is not him yet still cool.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 27 July 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"I like Killian because he has the same name as one of my best friends"

The problem here is that Killian is not my name at all, it's kilian. thanks all the same :-)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 27 July 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

my peak has long since passed but then i've never learned the skill of knowing when to stop

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 27 July 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it is possible for me to peak -- I'm all valleys. So I may as well keep posting, I can't get any worse.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You are far too down on yourself, everyone loves you. Your only enemy is N., and he hates everyone he cannot have.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

If so, I only have a few days left. Fare thee well, ILE.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 July 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

To me it'd be like saying "should you stop talking to your friends and find new ones after one year" which is silly. I was going to say there's possibly more repetition/fluff on a board (if only by mistake some of the time) but who am I kidding, my real life is fluffier and stupider than ILX so umm... I'm not sure what my point was.

Wheres the coffee?

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 28 July 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

To me it'd be like saying "should you stop talking to your friends and find new ones after one year" which is silly.

So THAT'S what I'm doing wrong in life, shit.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh actually I just realised half my friends do that to me, anyway, so maybe I'm missing something... sorry, I'll go sulk in the corner now...

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 28 July 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)
