When does an ab curl/crunch become a sit-up?

Is there a specific point at which a crunch becomes a full sit-up? Is it measurable in degrees? Radians? Does the angle of distinction change when said abdominal exercise is performed on an incline?

I believe the current wisdom is that sit-ups are when you sit all the way up, vertically. They are bad for your back, though, so crunches replaced them. So crunches now ARE sit-ups.

I believe that in curls/crunches your lower back is meant to remain in contact with the surface you're raising yourself from.

sit ups are when yr legs stay still, generally bcz somebody else is holding yr feet or you have yr toes underneath something heavier than yr upper bod. Crunches are when both sides of the body bend up.

If you really wnt to tone yr midsection all you have to do is proper pushups and reverse pushups - the strain of maintaining a straight shape while elevated is plenty enough to keep abs in shape, at least as far as I'm concerned (YMMV)

Millar OTM. Push-ups = total upper body strength. But you reduce the middle faster with sit-ups. Not that I've tried in a while, obviously.

sit-ups to be cool again in 2004!

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Sunday, 27 July 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, if ya'all really wanna work your midsections, you'll go take a goddamned Pilates class and do that fucking one where everything's in the air, my god what is that called? I used to be able to do like 40 of those, but that was when I had awesome abs also.

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 27 July 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 27 July 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

no, i think gyms are immoral and wrong. but i lead a very busy lifestyle, and get plenty exercise, except for this region

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 27 July 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

gyms are wrong (the only form of exercise I did was swimming but i did it bcz i liked it: don't do it anymore tho').

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 27 July 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to do some push-ups right now!

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 27 July 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

shit I'm down to 46. I need to start giving a fuck again.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 27 July 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Giving a fuck is for losers. It's all about buying gym memberships and then thinking about going, then going eh, forget it.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

gyms are immoral and wrong

why?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 28 July 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about buying gym memberships and then thinking about going, then going eh, forget it.

All too often. But it's really all about setting goals and timelines and diets, and sticking to them. Not that I've done that, either. It would help if I could hire a trainer, but... you know... money.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 28 July 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing is, I'm so undisciplined, I need someone to say to me in a forceful voice, "Eat this. Do this exercise for this long and at this time. Don't look at me like that, you soft little wussy bitch boy. Just fucking do it."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 28 July 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar what happens in the AF when they're like "okay slug-breath, gimme 100!" and you can only do like 30?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 July 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

cause i can only do like 30 :(

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 July 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank god you're not in the AF then. Because if you can't they sing the song at you and you got to stand for like 5 hours straight, it ain't pretty.
